3 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Lootsbuurt Lootstraat AH Amsterdam The Lootsbuurt in Amsterdam is a neighbourhood of 19th century worker's housing The project is split between two locations on the Jacob van Lennepstraat, one on a corner of the Lootsstraat and the other further along the street Both buildings are flanked by 19th century buildings The corner block contains 20 social housing units of which four are suited for wheelchair users and five are designed for supervised accommodation The corner of the block is open allowing contact between the street and the block's enclosed interior The dwellings are accessed via open double-height galleries that give the project a bright and airy feel While the building attaches itself to its neighbours by adopting their 19th century fenestration and detailing, it distinguishes itself by the subtle execution of these parts of the design The end product represents a contemporary addition that shows respect for its surroundings photo: Roos Aldershoff hvdn architecten Vink Bouw Nieuwkoop De Alliantie Huizen hvdn-architecten 3

4 Milos Housing Carolina MacGillavrylaan XA Amsterdam This housing complex Milos is part of a larger mixed-used development around the Science Park Amsterdam, located in the neighbourhood Watergraafsmeer The Science Park is transformed into an international knowledge centre, and next to new educational buildings and related companies, the area is completed with housing Milos is the most western building with a plinth of 4 to 5 layers, and a 45m high tower The complex gives the impression of a modern castle, surrounded by water Pedestrians and cyclists enter the building by passing a bridge The closed inner courtyard is furnished with wooden floors Because of the situation next to the railway tracks, the building has a double façade: a glass screen is placed in front of the thermal skin, and serves as a sound barrier Contractor hvdn architecten Heddes Hopman Interheem Groep Bjorn_Utpott The Sciencepark is close to trainstation Muiderpoort You can also take bus

5 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Albatros Johan van Hasseltweg WV Amsterdam The area around the van Hasseltweg in Amsterdam North is to be developed, setting large urban scale projects amongst the existing small 'garden-village' housing estates The planning activity is concentrated around the location of the new North/South axis metro station and the Albatros is the first of the projects to come on stream The most important challenge in designing the Albatros was reconciling the confrontation between the scales of the new large developments and that of the surrounding housing In order that the building would not act as a huge barrier within the neighbourhood, it was decided to 'break it up' by dividing it into four tower-like fins arranged on a base or plinth This plinth contains all the commercial and community orientated services and is equal in height to the neighbouring structures The 130 dwellings are housed in the four fins above The building as a whole has the appearance of a large scale sculpture Contractor hvdn architecten Bouwbedrijf De Waal De Principaal hvdn-architecten photo: Luuk Kramer 5

6 photo: architour Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Panamakade AX Amsterdam Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2000 Landscape architect West 8 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi 24/7 in public space The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo 6

7 photo: Maarten Helle Cancer Center Amsterdam De Boelelaan HZ Amsterdam The Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) is part of and built in the direct vicinity of the VU Medical Centre (VUmc) It is an academical cancer expertise centre for research and treatment The CCA is financed mainly through private means and therefore built their semi-permanent housing with prefabricated building units that look like stacked containers The building has 7 storeys, each covering some 1425 m2 The whole complex was built within a year The team of project members supported the CCA by delivering the building system and their services for cost-price Contractor MVRDV De Meeuw Bouwsystemen Cancer Center Amsterdam Bjorn_Utpott The closest train station is Zuid-WTC, from which it is about 15 minutes walking You can also take tram/subway 50 to the stop at Amstelveenseweg From here it's about 10 minutes walking Tram 16 and 24 leave from Central Station and stop directly at the Vumc 7

8 The Funen Funenpark NL-1018 AK Amsterdam This housing project is part of the larger urban masterplan 'The Funen Park', also designed by de Architekten Cie The urban plan in characterized by an inner area with sufficient green space, a park-like area with smaller building typologies This inner-space is surrounded by these large scale mixed use buildings The peripheral construction protects the inner area and also serves as a sound barrier against noise from the railway Four small gates, which adjoin the entrance halls, and one large gateway provides access to and view of the inner area The peripheral construction was designed by a single architect The contrast between the peripheral construction and the inner area enlivens the whole complex 2005 Contractor de Architekten Cie Heijmans Heijmans MI_MOA 8

9 Ernst & Young Tower Antonio Vivaldistraat HP Amsterdam The 87m-high 24-storey tower was commissioned by ING Real Estate - with Ernst & Young as the principal tenants It is one of several office buildings located at the eastern gateway to the mixed-use Zuidas development, south of Amsterdam The appearance of the building is determined by a distinctive 'diagrid' that ensures the tower is readily-identifiable on the drive into Amsterdam The structural steel diagrid is clad in silver aluminium and offset against the dark glazed cladding panels, which reduce the definition of the individual floor levels This creates an elegant and arresting lattice that scales the entire facade For the first month after the completion, the newly opened building is transformed by colour Floor area/size m² Contractor Foster & Partners Strukton ING Real Estate Bjorn_Utpott Office Hours You might be able to visit the entrance lobby The offices are situated next to the KPN Telecom building, approximately 200 metres from RAI railway station Phone: +31 (0) Car: From the A2 Utrecht, take the A10 (Amsterdam/Zaandam/ RAI exit), as far as the RAI exit 9

11 Animal Shelter Ookmeerweg SP Amsterdam The largest animal shelter of the (2007) houses 180 dogs and 480 cats The building is isolated to reduce noise from the barking dogs That is also why the shelters for the cats are stacked upon the dog-houses In the centre of the building is a large open space an outside play area The colours in the building skin are derived from a pixelated print of grass Project is public! 12 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 15 Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 15

16 photo: Dirk Verwoerd Studenthousing Oslofjordweg Ms Oslofjordweg SL Amsterdam On the former NDSM-wharf, an industrial area, now transformed into a new-media park with upcoming events and creative companies, these 380 living-cabins have temporarily been placed for students The containers will stay here (at least) until 2010 Each box has its own services like a kitchen, bathroom, toilet, tv-connection and internet, measuring 24 m2 One box costs about 350 euro to rent, all inclusive The students have a larger communal space for parties, gatherings, or, just to get together Another shared facility is the wash-space, to do the laundry, and a container for garbage The ferry-boat takes the students to the Central Train station According to the Duwo, "there really is no need to take the boat to the centre," the next-door IJ-halls offer several different activities, parties and large festivals The former ship-yard hall has a large skate-ramp with bars, restaurants, and even MTV has found its new headquarters in one of the halls next door photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is public! 2005 Contractor Te Kiefte en Plegt-Vos Stichting DUWO Naomi You can visit the public places in between the boxes If you want to enter them, you could try your luck and ask one of the inhabitants From the Central Train station take the (free) ferry-boat to the most western-stop there is to the NDSM-werf Is't a 2 minute walk from there 16

17 Single family houses Borneokade AW Amsterdam These are 28 single family houses, all situated on the ground floor They all have their entrance on the street side (Borneokade) but when you walk by, you would hardly see that there are indeed 28 front doors Half of them lay behind the first row of houses, reached through a sort of alley These houses have their backside on the waterfront of the canal Go see the satellite images to get an idea of the composition 1999 Van Herk & de Kleijn Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs Naomi Take the Borneo Island bus number 43 from Amsterdam Central Station, and walk all the way to the end of the island 17

18 photo: Norbert van Onna Enneüs Heermabrug IJburglaan 1086 XT Amsterdam This was the first of two bridges for IJburg, a new residential area east of Amsterdam Centre, built on reclaimed land IJburg is an archipelago of seven artificial islands The bridge is one of Amsterdam s largest bridges, with two large bows of each 75 m The total length of the main bridge is 250 m Grimshaw won an international design competition before they were appointed to design these two first bridges of IJburg Project is public! 23 8 villas Lisdoddelaan KA Amsterdam The urban design drawn up by Bosch s for the Small Rietisland on IJburg, provides for 140 luxury dwellings, most of which are to be designed and built as individual homes by the owners themselves, and some as a cluster Within the scheme, Bosch s designed a cluster of 8 villas, characterized by dark concrete façade elements, interspersed with white stucco and glass Each villa is designed as an elongated box containing the living room as an enclosed, introverted space on the south side Two patios provide daylight in the elongated space A staircase in the middle leas to the first floor where there is a sunroom with glass on all sides on top of a grass-covered roof A second staircase leads to a closed turret room with round portholes, which provide a view of the surrounding area, Diemerpark and cloud filled skies In 2006 Bosch merged with Van den Oever Zaaijer & partners architects 2005 Main designer, Contractor Bosch s van den Oever, Zaaijer & Partners architecten Moes Bouwgroep IJburger Maatschappij Bjorn_Utpott Tram 26 to IJburg, stop at Diemerparklaan 23

24 photo: Luis Monteiro photo: Luis Monteiro Nescio Bridge Buitenkerkerweg 1095 KL Amsterdam This cycle and pedestrian bridge is the longest in the, spanning the busy Rijn Kanaal in the IJburg district of Amsterdam The result of a close collaboration between architects and engineers, the bridge provides a vital connection for residents of IJburg, a suburb built on recently reclaimed land east of the city, with the Diemerpark at the mainland With its slender form, the bridge slots elegantly into its surroundingsthe bridge has a clear span of 170 m, providing the 10 cm clearance necessary for boats on the canal below The long approaches at either end have e a shallow gradient for cyclists and other bridge users Curved in plan, the bridge is designed to sit elegantly within the reclaimed landscape and to respect its unique ecological habitats A unique feature of this first suspension bridge in the is that the deck is suspended on one side only It is also Wilkinson Eyre s first project in the country Project is public! 2005 Structural engineer Wilkinson Eyre s Arup City of Amsterdam Bjorn_Utpott 24/7 Take tram 26 to IJburg, or tram 9 to Diemen 24

25 Depot Scheepvaart Museum Kattenburgerstraat JA Amsterdam Hidden behind a long closed brick wall stands this awkward looking titanium shape It is a pity passing pedestrians can never reach the other side of the wall The terrain is part of the Marine Etablissement, a secured naval complex in the centre of Amsterdam, and closed for the public All this enhances the air of secrecy around it The building by Liesbeth van der Pol is designed to house the collection of the Maritime Museum, next door It has no windows and is completely encased in titanium, to protect the valuable objects inside form light and exposure to the outside elements There is one possibility to visit this building: when you are studying or scientifically investigating a marine-related subject, and are in need of an object, map, photo or book that is part of the collection, you can make an appointment with the Scheepvaart Museum to obtain permission Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Contractor Dok en Rijksgebouwen Dienst JP van Eesteren Rijksgebouwen Dienst Naomi Take bus 42 from central station to KSNM-Laan Stop at Kattenburgerstraat 25

26 photo: Christian Richters De Tropenpunt Mauritskade RP Amsterdam Opposite of the largest anthropological museum, The Tropenmuseum, a new apartment building was set up, De Tropenpunt It consists out of twelve luxurious apartments, above an exposition space, bar and 14 mechanically organized indoor parking lots Its triangular location forms the new end of a 19th century building block Because of this shape, the apartments have a special floor plan, with light coming in from both sides Also in the façade we can recognize a special scheme with light: a mix of vertical and horizontal lines of dark stone, glass and aluminium The floors at the corner slightly overlap each other Floor area/size m² Contractor Designed by Erick van Egeraat Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs en Zn De Principaal, Amsterdam MI_MOA East side of town: tram 9 and bus 22 stop at Linnaeusstraat 26

29 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Qubic Stavangerweg AT Amsterdam In the Houthavens, a former harbour area on the West of the city centre of Amsterdam, 1000 students will temporarily be housed here Until the new housing developments start, these students will live on a ship (the Rochdale One), in former asylumseeker-housing and in 715 container-houses, that were designed bij hvdn architects The project was designed and built within 12 months The architects made a prefabricated system out of containers of 9 by 3 meters This system made that the houses could be built rapidly, they are re-usable and the costs were kept to a minimum Six different façades with six different colours where chosen to make several changing combinations Each unit contains a private kitchen, a shower and a toilet In the most northern block, at the IJ river is a restaurant and bar photo: Luuk Kramer Floor area/size m² Contractor hvdn architecten Ursem Bouwgroep De Principaal, Amsterdam hvdn-architecten The surrounding streets are open to the public 29

30 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 30
