3 Jan Schaeferbrug Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam A 285 meter long bridge over the IJ canal links Oostelijke Handelskade to the new housing area on Java-island The logic location for the bridge was the place, where 1934 warehouse The Zwijger stood Instead of demolishing the old warehouse, the client decided to pierce the bridge through the building The bridge is designed for cars, bicycles and pedestrians The separate roads for these traffic types differ in inclination The underside of the bridge has an asymmetric curving shape, and its legs are set wide apart in the water Parts of the road-deck are detachable to allow incidental passing of large boats Project is public! 4 photo: architour photo: Allard van der Hoek The Whale Baron G A Tindalplein TW Amsterdam The Whale is one of three big meteorites which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen is a real landmark Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8 The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade Project is not public! 6 Movenpick Hotel Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam wwwmoevenpick-amsterdamcom This 65 m high, four-star hotel counts 410 rooms and features a touring car terminal, an underground parking garage and several conference rooms On top of a red ceramic-clad plinth, which runs through to the Passenger Terminal, stands the nine-storey hotel tower The façade of the hotel is made out of horizontal strips of glass, granite, marble and white concrete Due to the stripe pattern and the materials, the façade is unusually abstract: neither the floors nor the function can be read from outside Project is public! 7 Music building on the IJ Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam Located at the head of Oostelijke Handelskade, the Muziekgebouw aan t IJ is the new home of two organizations devoted to modern and non-western music Each organisation has been given its own architectural identity inside the new building by placing its concert hall in clearly separate volumes Eye-catcher and unifying element is the gigantic roof At its headend, the building features a large open space which functions as a public plaza On the waterside lies a wide square with an outdoor café on the water The 24 meter high glass façade provides a panoramic view of the river IJ Project is public! 8 photo: Hans Kuiper photo: Pakhuis de Zwijger Warehouse De Zwijger Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam This warehouse was originally built in 1934 and is an exponent of the functional expressionism Two special elements of the concrete construction are the mushroom-columns and the large floors hanging over the ground floor It was used as a cooling house for food From 1960 onwards it deteriorated and was squatted and used as an underground practice space for several bands like Herman Brood and Loïs Lane Many plans for re-use and re-development failed to start In 2001 a bridge was built right through the building Shortly afterward it became a National Monument and now the warehouse is a place for media and culture It has a TV-studio, exposition-space, ateliers, conference rooms, offices, several stages for theatre, music, concerts and lectures On the ground floor is a public bar and restaurant Project is public! 9 IJ tower Oostelijke Handelskade DN Amsterdam This seventy meters high, 20 stories apartment tower is situated on the dam towards the KNSM Island, in the former docklands, east of the centre of Amsterdam The tower has a regular facade composition with a diagonal window pattern Several 'holes' in the building give it a strong sculpturally and generate a variety of 20 different dwelling types The tower has been sculpted differently at each side The building works as an orientating element in the new dockland area The 3 stories plinth of the tower consists of a fitness club, roof garden, commercial retail spaces and a parking garage Project is not public! 10 Piraeus Levantkade MJ Amsterdam The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters It comprises 330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8 The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing All façades are different in rhythm, details and openings Project is not public! 1994 Main designer, Artist Contractor Hans Kollhoff Rapp + Rapp Arno van der Mark Slokker Bouwmaatschappij bv De Doelen, woningbouwvereniging, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 10 to Azartplein Bus 41 / 42 to Azartplein 10

11 Hoogtij KNSM laan LL Amsterdam At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size West is the larger of the two: Langhaus Langhaus has large gaps on each side of the block It is 8 stories high The lower part, on the east side, is called Hofhaus It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor This project raised very different reactions: some find it the little ugly duckling of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very quiet photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! 2000 Diener & Diener HelleBeelden Tram 10 stops at the Azartplein 11

12 Rietlanden Rietlandpark DT Amsterdam Five metallic housing-towers mark the entrance of the Piet-Hein tunnel in the Eastern Docklands They look like large guards The towers contain 156 apartments, of which 36 are social rent Several have outside space, like a loggia, a balcony or terrace At the ground floor are commercial spaces and offices and the entrances to the apartments From here the parking garage is entered On the roof of the parking a basketball field is made This forms a podium in between the towers Project is not public! 13 Detroit Oostelijke Handelskade Purperhoedenveem HE Amsterdam On a former warehouse site in the Eastern Harbour Area this large black brick block houses 82 luxurious apartments and 1650 m2 office space Rental prices includes all extras, in a building where everything is made to please, save time and to ensure spare time is free of all cares An indoor swimming pool and sauna, health club and private parking are just part of the ordinary extras In Detroit its the small things that mater Laundry machines on the first floor, super-fast cleaning, saving time and space, since no laundry room is required in your own apartment Lights and sun blinds can be adjusted and arranged on a touch screen Shopping with your fingertips and finding them in your personal refrigerator / safe box after work Guests can stay in the luxury hotel rooms, and as you lock your apartment, the elevator automatically arrives Ahh Project is not public! 14 Passenger Terminal Amsterdam Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) was the first completed building in the regeneration master plan for the revitalization of the Eastern Docklands Big cruise-ships can moore at the large terminal in walking distance from the city centre, next to the Music Building and Movenpick Hotel It houses a combination of functions: large meeting spaces, a touring car terminal, offices, a conference centre and an underground parking garage While in high season foreign visitors are welcomed, in low season the building is used for events, large commercial happenings, exhibitions and conferences The PTA is a joint venture between NS Stations (Dutch Railway Stations) and the Harbour of Amsterdam London architecture firm HOK provided it with a wave-like shape for the nautical look Project is public! 15 Australie - Boston Purperhoedenveem HM Amsterdam The urban plan for the Oostelijke Handelskade was developed by Rapp & Rapp, based on a series of monoliths, Australië - Boston lies in middle of the line These giants are being realized via construction envelopes that simultaneously guarantee good urbanism and a large freedom of design DKV decided to conserve the 19th century warehouse Australie and built a new U-shaped mass over the old warehouse, connecting each other with glass volumes The apartments in the old part are (to be) sold The new Boston are only rented apartments; high-end rent All have glass facades and an open floor-plan, with only one fixed element: the service block with bathroom and kitchen Inhabitants can use the indoor swimming pool, fitness and sauna inside neighbor deluxe Detroit In 2002, with the construction fully underway, the Australië - Boston warehouse was completely destroyed by fire Because it was the determining image for the entire complex, it was decided to reconstruct the building Project is not public! 2006 DKV en Vesteda MI_MOA Boston is just 10 min walking form Central Station Or take tram 26 to IJburg and stop at Kattenburgerstraat 15

16 Sky Dome KNSM-laan LG Amsterdam The only real high building on the KNSM-island is that of Wiel Arets, and with 60m it is not even that high It was one of the last additions to the new housing district of the island and appears to be four towers in one since the block has been cut The different apartment types have simply been stacked and each stacked tower is fixed to the other with balconies The facades are not of stone, but anthracite colored concrete that was cast into rubber elements of 2 by 2 meter The same façade-system was used in apartment-tower De Hoge Heren in Rotterdam Project is not public! 1995 Wiel Arets s Wilma Bouw MI_MOA Bus 42 to KNSM Eiland and tram 10 to Azartplein 16

17 photo: Bastiaan Vlierboom photo: Bastiaan Vlierboom VillaVlier Stuurmankade WE Amsterdam The interior of VillaVlier was designed directly after the whole apartment building was completed It is on the first floor of this 3-layer-head-block on a serie of row housing, at the end of the island The 150m2 apartment is divided into several different living spaces, by 3 bedsteads These brown and red boxes house the sleeping areas, closet, computerroom, wardrobe and more 'secrets' that can be easily shut off from the living spaces The boxes are opened for the night, and a room with a window turns up During the day the box is closed, and all secrets are kept behind closed doors There are no fixed wall and the facade is kept free from interfering obstacles This way the whole facade functions as 24 m long space Project is not public! 18 photo: architour Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Panamakade AX Amsterdam Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2000 Landscape architect West 8 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi 24/7 in public space The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo 18

21 Single family houses Borneokade AW Amsterdam These are 28 single family houses, all situated on the ground floor They all have their entrance on the street side (Borneokade) but when you walk by, you would hardly see that there are indeed 28 front doors Half of them lay behind the first row of houses, reached through a sort of alley These houses have their backside on the waterfront of the canal Go see the satellite images to get an idea of the composition Project is not public! 1999 Van Herk & de Kleijn Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs Naomi Take the Borneo Island bus number 43 from Amsterdam Central Station, and walk all the way to the end of the island 21

22 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 23 Gibraltar Jollemanhof 1019 GW Amsterdam The Gibraltar housing building has 11 floors On the ground floor are 6 living/work houses that have a double height Above these, from the second until the 11th floor, lay 60 apartments in the sector social rent The facades of the building are not typical for social housing The image of this building, deriving from the cool and systematic façade, is more that one of an office No individual apartment is recognized in this repetition of floor-height windows The light, creamy colour of the concrete contrasts with the mainly dark colours used in the Eastern Harbour district The façade on the north side, near the waterfront is less strict This is where the main entrance is located Here a large glass membrane opens up the interior where coloured corridors and interior balconies are visible Project is not public! 2004 Contractor Claus en Kaan en IBC Woningbouw Oosterveem, Stichting Woningbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi Bus 42 from Central Station of from station Muiderpoort, stop at Kattenburg Tram 26 leaves from central station and stops Kattenburgerstraat, just in front of the building From central station it's about 15 minutes walking, exit the station at the north side (water front) and go right (east ward), walk along the water until you reach the new buildings on your left 23

24 photo: Piotr Krajewski Schirmeister House Scheepstimmermanstraat Amsterdam Investor budget could only cover 50% of the available volume, meaning that roughly half of the lot would have to be left unbuilt Theoretically, this could only be achieved in one of two ways The architect could make an internal court, dividing the house into something resembling the traditional front and back sections, or he could develop only half the depth of the six-metre-wide lot, leaving an alleyway of sorts As it happens, this second strategy was perfect for parking the client's three cars in procession on his own property as requested The result was an ultra-slender (270m clear), relatively deep house with an adjoining open space that so widened the view from the property that the head elevations could be blankwalled save for a few low-lying horizontal slits The long, freestanding sidewall on the other hand sports mainly tall narrow windows that permit a sidelong view of things All this together stitches the undeveloped area to the house (text from architect's website) Project is not public! 1999 Herman Hertzberger pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 24

25 photo: Julie Fuchs photo: Julie Fuchs Piet Hein Tunnel Service Building C van Eesterenlaan 1011KD Amsterdam The Piet Hein Tunnel is part of the continuing development of the eastern area of Amsterdam and is situated in the midst of several new building projects This project consists of two small service buildings These technical constructions each have a concrete core, enveloped by an asymmetrical skin of perforated steel plates and tilted roof planes In conjunction with the general asymmetry, this emphasizes the 'non-architectural', object-like character of the inaccessible service structures Rather than real, lived-in buildings, these structures function as urban signposts for the tunnel entrances These entrances are characterized by the simple application of profiled aluminium cladding Steel beams are placed crossways over the sober concrete tunnel mouths (text from architect's website) photo: Julie Fuchs Project is not public! 27 photo: Duccio Malagamba photo: Duccio Malagamba House Vos Scheepstimmermanstraat Amsterdam The Scheepstimmermansstraat in Amsterdam consists of row houses designed by different architects and realized for private clients To the south, the houses directly face the water This house was designed for mountaineer Bart Vos and was built in a black concrete frame On the street side, there is parking space for a car and a patio with an acacia tree Behind this lies the four-storey high dwelling Glass for the façade and the roof was extensively used Project is not public! 29 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Jeroen Musch Huys Afrika Residential Building Vemenplein AT Amsterdam The new Huys Afrika residential building has been designed as a periscope that overlooks the old Afrika warehouse in the direction of the river, with respect to the cruise ship terminal The entrance to the new Afrika warehouse has been formed by maximizing the integration of living and working, as well as the creation of a mix between old and new The façade is made of rust-coloured, prefabricated concrete elements that form a 'fabric' in order to emphasise the sculptural properties of the volume The northern façade, which faces the river, has been tilted up and is in its entirety constructed of glass This double façade forms a barrier to the noisy ships Due to the disturbing noise levels from the adjacent railway line, the other façades are to be made of extra thick glazed elements The newly placed columns interact with the existing ones in a manner by which the building's proportions are retained, thus doing justice to this monument photo: Jeroen Musch Project is not public! 30 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Pavilion Lloydplein Lloydplein BZ Amsterdam This pavilion is situated on the Lloydplein, a square along the river IJ in Amsterdam It is a freestanding object, framed on three sides by several large complexes It has spacious views towards the harbour on the north side The building has been designed as two interwoven volumes: on the ground floor, a space for the catering industry, and on the first floor an office space The two patios on the first floor and the stairwell diversify the volume and refine the shape The total complex of dark-stained stone with frames of zinc forms a distinct sculpture on the square, with a framed window on the head of the volume guaranteeing a spectacular view towards the river photo: Christian Richters Public access unknown!
