4 Jan Schaeferbrug Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam A 285 meter long bridge over the IJ canal links Oostelijke Handelskade to the new housing area on Java-island The logic location for the bridge was the place, where 1934 warehouse The Zwijger stood Instead of demolishing the old warehouse, the client decided to pierce the bridge through the building The bridge is designed for cars, bicycles and pedestrians The separate roads for these traffic types differ in inclination The underside of the bridge has an asymmetric curving shape, and its legs are set wide apart in the water Parts of the road-deck are detachable to allow incidental passing of large boats Project is public! 8 Movenpick Hotel Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam wwwmoevenpick-amsterdamcom This 65 m high, four-star hotel counts 410 rooms and features a touring car terminal, an underground parking garage and several conference rooms On top of a red ceramic-clad plinth, which runs through to the Passenger Terminal, stands the nine-storey hotel tower The façade of the hotel is made out of horizontal strips of glass, granite, marble and white concrete Due to the stripe pattern and the materials, the façade is unusually abstract: neither the floors nor the function can be read from outside Project is public! m² Claus en Kaan en Amplan Vastgoed MI_MOA 24/7 Tram

9 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten Project is not public! 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 9

10 Bicycle Flat Stationsplein AB Amsterdam The 100 metre long bicycle flat at the Central Station was built to temporarily store thousands of bikes during the period that old bicycle-stands had to be removed during the large renovation of the surroundings at Central Station The building was built over water to maximise land-use (or in this case: water-use) It consists out of three slightly sloping parking decks There is a small surveillance facility in the centre of this quayside structure The bicycle flat was supposed to be closed and removed in 2004 In 2006 it still exists Now the flat is planned to be removed in 2009 There are plans to built a second one photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! m² VMX s Amsterdam City Council MI_MOA 24/7 Next to Central Station 10

13 Hoogtij KNSM laan LL Amsterdam At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size West is the larger of the two: Langhaus Langhaus has large gaps on each side of the block It is 8 stories high The lower part, on the east side, is called Hofhaus It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor This project raised very different reactions: some find it the little ugly duckling of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very quiet photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! 2000 Diener & Diener HelleBeelden Tram 10 stops at the Azartplein 13

14 Depot Scheepvaart Museum Kattenburgerstraat JA Amsterdam Hidden behind a long closed brick wall stands this awkward looking titanium shape It is a pity passing pedestrians can never reach the other side of the wall The terrain is part of the Marine Etablissement, a secured naval complex in the centre of Amsterdam, and closed for the public All this enhances the air of secrecy around it The building by Liesbeth van der Pol is designed to house the collection of the Maritime Museum, next door It has no windows and is completely encased in titanium, to protect the valuable objects inside form light and exposure to the outside elements There is one possibility to visit this building: when you are studying or scientifically investigating a marine-related subject, and are in need of an object, map, photo or book that is part of the collection, you can make an appointment with the Scheepvaart Museum to obtain permission Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Contractor Dok en Rijksgebouwen Dienst JP van Eesteren Rijksgebouwen Dienst Naomi Take bus 42 from central station to KSNM-Laan Stop at Kattenburgerstraat 14

17 Sky Dome KNSM-laan LG Amsterdam The only real high building on the KNSM-island is that of Wiel Arets, and with 60m it is not even that high It was one of the last additions to the new housing district of the island and appears to be four towers in one since the block has been cut The different apartment types have simply been stacked and each stacked tower is fixed to the other with balconies The facades are not of stone, but anthracite colored concrete that was cast into rubber elements of 2 by 2 meter The same façade-system was used in apartment-tower De Hoge Heren in Rotterdam Project is not public! 1995 Wiel Arets s Wilma Bouw MI_MOA Bus 42 to KNSM Eiland and tram 10 to Azartplein 17

46 photo: Jan Bitter photo: Jan Bitter De Nieuwe Liefde Da Costakade WP Amsterdam De Nieuwe Liefde ( The New Love ) is a theatre and community centre located in a monumental white building that was originally constructed in 1904 as storage space for a local wine company After falling into disrepair, and in accordance with the last tenants leaving the property in 2007, the De Liefde was completely rebuilt by Wiel Arets s and renamed De Nieuwe Liefde The reconstruction transformed the existing building into a series of new spaces composed of a main hall with seating for 230, a conference room with space for 60, a choir space for 50, a library, a separate restaurant-café and a grand foyer that decompresses into a central circulation void Prior to the renovation the building retained many of its original Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau features and therefore the approach was to utilise these assets, as well as the existing main staircase and extensive stained glass windows throughout Project is public! 47 photo: Jan Bitter Gallery Borzo Keizersgracht EJ Amsterdam The historic Amsterdam canal house on Keizersgracht 516, which dates back to 1882, used to be an average canal house It now accommodates Gallery Borzo, which opened in January 2006 after a period of careful reconstruction and restoration When the building was assigned for reconstruction in October 2004, its previous structural alternations were rather disguised At the beginning of the 20th century the building was converted into a warehouse In 1932 it was once again remodeled, this time into a bookstore with various routing paths A hanging steel construction was added during this period to allowed the façade to be opened up andallow more natural light into the deep and narrow bookstore A vertical column containing the book elevator spatially balanced these mostly horizontal elements Project is public! m² Wiel Arets s WielAretss photo: Jan Bitter 47
