3 Jan Schaeferbrug Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam A 285 meter long bridge over the IJ canal links Oostelijke Handelskade to the new housing area on Java-island The logic location for the bridge was the place, where 1934 warehouse The Zwijger stood Instead of demolishing the old warehouse, the client decided to pierce the bridge through the building The bridge is designed for cars, bicycles and pedestrians The separate roads for these traffic types differ in inclination The underside of the bridge has an asymmetric curving shape, and its legs are set wide apart in the water Parts of the road-deck are detachable to allow incidental passing of large boats Project is public! 4 photo: architour photo: Allard van der Hoek The Whale Baron G A Tindalplein TW Amsterdam The Whale is one of three big meteorites which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen is a real landmark Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8 The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade m² Main designer, Landscape architect Contractor Supplier Structural engineer de Architekten Cie West 8 Heijmans NedZink NTV Pieters Bouwtechniek Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij New Deal MI_MOA photo: Luis Monteiro 4

5 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 5

6 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Qubic Stavangerweg AT Amsterdam In the Houthavens, a former harbour area on the West of the city centre of Amsterdam, 1000 students will temporarily be housed here Until the new housing developments start, these students will live on a ship (the Rochdale One), in former asylumseeker-housing and in 715 container-houses, that were designed bij hvdn architects The project was designed and built within 12 months The architects made a prefabricated system out of containers of 9 by 3 meters This system made that the houses could be built rapidly, they are re-usable and the costs were kept to a minimum Six different façades with six different colours where chosen to make several changing combinations Each unit contains a private kitchen, a shower and a toilet In the most northern block, at the IJ river is a restaurant and bar photo: Luuk Kramer m² Structural engineer hvdn architecten Ursem Bouwgroep De Principaal, Amsterdam hvdn-architecten The surrounding streets are open to the public 6

8 photo: Hans Kuiper photo: Pakhuis de Zwijger Warehouse De Zwijger Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam This warehouse was originally built in 1934 and is an exponent of the functional expressionism Two special elements of the concrete construction are the mushroom-columns and the large floors hanging over the ground floor It was used as a cooling house for food From 1960 onwards it deteriorated and was squatted and used as an underground practice space for several bands like Herman Brood and Loïs Lane Many plans for re-use and re-development failed to start In 2001 a bridge was built right through the building Shortly afterward it became a National Monument and now the warehouse is a place for media and culture It has a TV-studio, exposition-space, ateliers, conference rooms, offices, several stages for theatre, music, concerts and lectures On the ground floor is a public bar and restaurant Project is public! m², Interior architect Contractor enbureau J van Stigt MI_MOA Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs en Zn Stadsherstel Amsterdam photo: Hans Kuiper Bar/Restaurant Mon - Fri: 09:00-23:00 h Other functions in the building depend on their agenda From Central Station take tram 26 to IJburg; stop Kattenburgerstraat Or bus 42 to KNSM eiland, stop at Schaeferbrug 8

9 Bicycle Flat Stationsplein AB Amsterdam The 100 metre long bicycle flat at the Central Station was built to temporarily store thousands of bikes during the period that old bicycle-stands had to be removed during the large renovation of the surroundings at Central Station The building was built over water to maximise land-use (or in this case: water-use) It consists out of three slightly sloping parking decks There is a small surveillance facility in the centre of this quayside structure The bicycle flat was supposed to be closed and removed in 2004 In 2006 it still exists Now the flat is planned to be removed in 2009 There are plans to built a second one photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! m² VMX s Amsterdam City Council MI_MOA 24/7 Next to Central Station 9

10 Stadgenoot pavilion Sarphatistraat GW Amsterdam This pavilion is part of a renovation Steven Holl did for Het Oosten, a housing developer in Amsterdam Since a merger in 2008 Het Oosten is part of StadgenootThe old brick building (1889) on the De Singel canal in Amsterdam was originally built as a storage for medicine With this pavilion the housing developer wanted to explain its views on sustainable building with the use of ornaments The pavilion is 285 m2 big, and 7 meter high It can house gatherings from 20 up to 280 persons The pavilion is not open to the public and is currently used by the people who work at Stadgenoot, for their lunch breaks photo: Maarten Thewissen m², Interior architect Structural engineer Lighting designer Associate architect Steven Holl MI_MOA Ingenieursgroep Van Rossum L'Observatoire International Rappange & Partners en bv Woningcorporatie Stadgenoot, Amsterdam public transport: tram 6, 7 and 10 stop at 's-gravezandestaat, or take the subway, nr 51, 53, 54 to Weesperplein 10

11 Piraeus Levantkade MJ Amsterdam The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters It comprises 330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8 The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing All façades are different in rhythm, details and openings 1994 Main designer, Artist Contractor Hans Kollhoff Rapp + Rapp Arno van der Mark Slokker Bouwmaatschappij bv De Doelen, woningbouwvereniging, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 10 to Azartplein Bus 41 / 42 to Azartplein 11

12 Australie - Boston Purperhoedenveem HM Amsterdam The urban plan for the Oostelijke Handelskade was developed by Rapp & Rapp, based on a series of monoliths, Australië - Boston lies in middle of the line These giants are being realized via construction envelopes that simultaneously guarantee good urbanism and a large freedom of design DKV decided to conserve the 19th century warehouse Australie and built a new U-shaped mass over the old warehouse, connecting each other with glass volumes The apartments in the old part are (to be) sold The new Boston are only rented apartments; high-end rent All have glass facades and an open floor-plan, with only one fixed element: the service block with bathroom and kitchen Inhabitants can use the indoor swimming pool, fitness and sauna inside neighbor deluxe Detroit In 2002, with the construction fully underway, the Australië - Boston warehouse was completely destroyed by fire Because it was the determining image for the entire complex, it was decided to reconstruct the building 2006 DKV en Vesteda MI_MOA Boston is just 10 min walking form Central Station Or take tram 26 to IJburg and stop at Kattenburgerstraat 12

13 Timorplein Celebesstraat EJ Amsterdam New housing replacing existing buildings in 4 locations, comprising a total of 128 apartments, in 3 different phases The first section, on Timorplein (square) was built in 2002 The second section is on the corner of Borneostraat and Delistraat The third section includes the end of the flats on Celebesstraat These end flats are linked by a car park that runs underneath Delistraat The flats on Celebesstraat are along the railway line Despite the need for sound reduction the architect decided to use the same storey-high windows that characterize the neighbors The large amount of space gives the apartments a very light, spacious feel The 72 units in this 3th section are very diverse in type, ranging from apartments to maisonettes, to penthouses and studio apartments The project also includes 21 social sector apartments, 2 of which are studio apartments This is a very beautiful urban plan, interacting with the existing structures in a very sensitive and subtle way 2004 Contractor Structural engineer Dok en Vink Bouw Nieuwkoop Strackee De Alliantie MI_MOA Take tram 9 from Central Station direction Diemen Stop at Lineausstraat and walk north, into the 'Eerste van Swindenstraat' Go left at the Celebesstraat, walk for 100 m and you'll see the houses on your left 13

14 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Bjorn Utpott ING House Amstelveenseweg KL Amsterdam A streamlined shape in anodized aluminum and glass, ING House is constructed like a table on sixteen steel legs They stand freely on pins in large concrete blocks in the ground, a technique used in bridge building On top of this table, the floors were built The belly of the building on the second floor thus rises to the level of the highway Ground level is below the highway About half of the total office space (20,000 m2) is reserved for flexible work stations There are fewer work stations than staff members (500) ING House also has a lobby, an auditorium with 250 seats and adjacent foyer, a restaurant, reception areas, a library and several meeting rooms The six inner gardens in the building are a totally integrated part of the office design The building is designed to save energy by the double skin and the specially controlled installations photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Main designer, Interior architect Structural engineer Project manager Services engineer MVSA s Ontwerpgroep Trude Hooykaas Aronsohn IPMMC Vastgoed Van Heugten ING Real Estate Bjorn_Utpott It is possible to bike from Amsterdam Central to the building (30-45 min), which is located just in the Zuidas area south west of Amsterdam Or take the Metro and get off at Amstelveenseweg The building is about 5 minutes walk away from that station 14

15 photo: architour Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Panamakade AX Amsterdam Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2000 Landscape architect West 8 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi 24/7 in public space The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo 15

18 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Vinoly tower Mahlerlaan LS Amsterdam The Viñoly tower is part of the Mahler 4 complex on the Amsterdam Zuidas (south-axe) This is the first project Viñoly completed in Europe Next to this tower, the complex consists out of office buildings by Toyo Ito, Michael Graves, en Cie and Skidmore, Owings & Merill The overall masterplan was designed by Dutch architect Pi de Bruijn of the en Cie The construction of this 91m high tower if made out of steel, with a concrete core for stability Very recognizable characteristics of this building are the carved flight stairs and the prominent façade-profiles The Dutch designing counterpart was Van den Oever, Zaaijer & partners m² Main designer, Structural engineer Structural engineer Rafael Vinoly s van den Oever, Zaaijer & Partners architecten Deerns Raadgevende Ingenieurs Ingenieursgroep Van Rossum ING Real Estate Bjorn_Utpott photo: Norbert van Onna Take the train, or the subway to the WTC trainstation Mahler4 is situated at the best site on the A10 ring road, with easy access from two exits (S108 and S109) There are optimal traffic facilities, most of which will be at underground level in future Close to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, with the high speed train on the doorstep By tram it s only a short ride to the Dam or Amstelveen There are plenty of parking places (capacity for 1,950 cars, underground) 18

19 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 19

20 photo: Gijs photo: Gijs Toyo Ito Gustav Mahlerplein MS Amsterdam The tower Toyo Ito (the building is named after its designer) is part of the Mahler 4 complex on the international business centre the Zuidas in Amsterdam Together with its neighbor Viñoly it is one of the most striking and recognizable buildings so far The building has several glass windows or holes in it The idea behind these voids is to enter the outside life into the building and to add light and space to the interior The first 6 floors are mainly occupied with offices, for the 370 employees The upper floors, in the second part of the building are reserved for meeting rooms This way the employees can reach their workspace faster, while meetings are held in the most elevated spaces m² Main designer, Interior architect Technical engineer Toyo Ito Ontwerpgroep Trude Hooykaas Deerns Raadgevende Ingenieurs ING Real Estate Gijs photo: Gijs 20

21 photo: Daria Scagliola photo: Daria Scagliola OZW De Boelelaan HV Amsterdam The OZW health care and well-being training institute is a new landmark for the architectural landscape of the VU University It embodies an innovative training concept that combines intermediate and higher level vocational training programmes and university programmes The softly shaped brick walls that bring to mind the Amsterdam School are in keeping with the nature of the training programmes The window spacing emphasizes the main outlines of the exterior and immediately draws attention to the transparency and vitality of the interior: a playful combination of training centres around atria From the south side, the atria gradually and diagonally lend access to the facilities From the base, one can see al the way up to the sixth floor The utility core is incorporated in the 'back bone' The private offices are at the far ends of the building The public base is transparent and the mysterious volume of the lecture hall inside catches the eye photo: Daria Scagliola Project is public! m² Jeanne Dekkers uur Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam jeannedekkers 21

22 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 30 The Funen Funenpark NL-1018 AK Amsterdam This housing project is part of the larger urban masterplan 'The Funen Park', also designed by de Architekten Cie The urban plan in characterized by an inner area with sufficient green space, a park-like area with smaller building typologies This inner-space is surrounded by these large scale mixed use buildings The peripheral construction protects the inner area and also serves as a sound barrier against noise from the railway Four small gates, which adjoin the entrance halls, and one large gateway provides access to and view of the inner area The peripheral construction was designed by a single architect The contrast between the peripheral construction and the inner area enlivens the whole complex 2005 Contractor de Architekten Cie Heijmans Heijmans MI_MOA 30

35 photo: Piotr Krajewski Schirmeister House Scheepstimmermanstraat Amsterdam Investor budget could only cover 50% of the available volume, meaning that roughly half of the lot would have to be left unbuilt Theoretically, this could only be achieved in one of two ways The architect could make an internal court, dividing the house into something resembling the traditional front and back sections, or he could develop only half the depth of the six-metre-wide lot, leaving an alleyway of sorts As it happens, this second strategy was perfect for parking the client's three cars in procession on his own property as requested The result was an ultra-slender (270m clear), relatively deep house with an adjoining open space that so widened the view from the property that the head elevations could be blankwalled save for a few low-lying horizontal slits The long, freestanding sidewall on the other hand sports mainly tall narrow windows that permit a sidelong view of things All this together stitches the undeveloped area to the house (text from architect's website) 1999 Herman Hertzberger pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 35
