3 photo: Daria Scagliola photo: Daria Scagliola OZW De Boelelaan HV Amsterdam The OZW health care and well-being training institute is a new landmark for the architectural landscape of the VU University It embodies an innovative training concept that combines intermediate and higher level vocational training programmes and university programmes The softly shaped brick walls that bring to mind the Amsterdam School are in keeping with the nature of the training programmes The window spacing emphasizes the main outlines of the exterior and immediately draws attention to the transparency and vitality of the interior: a playful combination of training centres around atria From the south side, the atria gradually and diagonally lend access to the facilities From the base, one can see al the way up to the sixth floor The utility core is incorporated in the 'back bone' The private offices are at the far ends of the building The public base is transparent and the mysterious volume of the lecture hall inside catches the eye photo: Daria Scagliola Project is public! 7 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Silodam Silodam AL Amsterdam The Housing Silo is situated on the IJ River, at the tip of the pier, next to two former grain warehouses (silos) that have been converted into housing The 157 apartments, business units and public spaces, in the Housing Silo, are compressed within a 10 storey high and 20 meters deep urban envelope The apartments, rental and owner in different sizes, are stacked, legible on the façade, each of which is expressed differently The aim of mixing functions spatially (commercial units and semi-public spaces were not to be confined automatically to ground level but distributed throughout the complex) has not been realized All commercial units have been gathered in a clearly recognisable volume At the west side is a shared roof terrace for residents, and small boats can moor between the columns underneath Project is not public! 8 Binnenhof & Gelderhof Arent Janszoon Ernststraat LT Amsterdam Around a public square a new housing complex is combined with two schools, kindergarten, several community functions, a small theatre and an underground parking The street façades of the houses have vertical stripes, of stone and glass Through this pattern diagonal white stripes are drawn The façades on the public square side have a warmer look with red panels and glass The multifunctional centre combines several public functions in an optimal setting and each user has a personal identity in the whole complex All users were consulted during the process and had influence in the design Erick van Egeraat s were initially commissioned to design the building, and cooperated in this project up to the preliminary design After that, Hillen & Roosen - the project developer - took over Project is public! 10 photo: Norbert van Onna Enneüs Heermabrug IJburglaan 1086 XT Amsterdam This was the first of two bridges for IJburg, a new residential area east of Amsterdam Centre, built on reclaimed land IJburg is an archipelago of seven artificial islands The bridge is one of Amsterdam s largest bridges, with two large bows of each 75 m The total length of the main bridge is 250 m Grimshaw won an international design competition before they were appointed to design these two first bridges of IJburg Project is public! 11 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Naomi Schiphorst Studenthousing Oslofjordweg Ms Oslofjordweg SL Amsterdam On the former NDSM-wharf, an industrial area, now transformed into a new-media park with upcoming events and creative companies, these 380 living-cabins have temporarily been placed for students The containers will stay here (at least) until 2010 Each box has its own services like a kitchen, bathroom, toilet, tv-connection and internet, measuring 24 m2 One box costs about 350 euro to rent, all inclusive The students have a larger communal space for parties, gatherings, or, just to get together Another shared facility is the wash-space, to do the laundry, and a container for garbage The ferry-boat takes the students to the Central Train station According to the Duwo, "there really is no need to take the boat to the centre," the next-door IJ-halls offer several different activities, parties and large festivals The former ship-yard hall has a large skate-ramp with bars, restaurants, and even MTV has found its new headquarters in one of the halls next door photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is public! 2005 Contractor Te Kiefte en Plegt-Vos Stichting DUWO Naomi You can visit the public places in between the boxes If you want to enter them, you could try your luck and ask one of the inhabitants From the Central Train station take the (free) ferry-boat to the most western-stop there is to the NDSM-werf Is't a 2 minute walk from there 11

13 Animal Shelter Ookmeerweg SP Amsterdam The largest animal shelter of the (2007) houses 180 dogs and 480 cats The building is isolated to reduce noise from the barking dogs That is also why the shelters for the cats are stacked upon the dog-houses In the centre of the building is a large open space an outside play area The colours in the building skin are derived from a pixelated print of grass Project is public! 16 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Funen Funenpark NL-1018 AK Amsterdam This housing project is part of the larger urban masterplan 'The Funen Park', also designed by de Architekten Cie The urban plan in characterized by an inner area with sufficient green space, a park-like area with smaller building typologies This inner-space is surrounded by these large scale mixed use buildings The peripheral construction protects the inner area and also serves as a sound barrier against noise from the railway Four small gates, which adjoin the entrance halls, and one large gateway provides access to and view of the inner area The peripheral construction was designed by a single architect The contrast between the peripheral construction and the inner area enlivens the whole complex Project is not public! 2005 Contractor de Architekten Cie Heijmans Heijmans MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst 16

17 photo: architour photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Borneo Sporenburg C van Eesterenlaan JK Amsterdam A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Project is public! 1997 Urban planner West 8 City of Amsterdam Naomi The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station Or rent a bike 17

18 photo: Sylvia Russel photo: Daniela Paes Leao Het Blauwe Huis Wily Mullenskade KH Amsterdam As initiator of the brainstormproject Het Blauwe Huis ( The Blue House ) Jeanne van Heeswijk wanted to establish a house for culture and research into the development and evolution of history and experimental communities The Blue House is situated at the centre of Housing Block 35 on Ijburg Van Heeswijk invites artists, architects, thinkers, writers and scholars of various nationalities to live and work in The Blue House By actively involving others to their work, they create a cultural infrastructure around the house, with a continuous exchange between the inhabitants of Block 35 and the rest of IJburg Block 35 is one of the first IJburg sections The Blue House can therefore follow the development of IJburg and this new community up close This combination of location and a particular moment in time, coupled with the opportunity to be temporary residents of IJburg, offers participants an ideal platform for studying, acting on and co-designing its public space photo: Blauwe Huis Project is public! 2005 Atelier DUTCH Jo_van_der_Spek wednesday and saturday tram 26, stop at ruisrietstraat 18

19 photo: Mieke Vullings Kraanspoor Ms Oslofjordweg 1033 SL Amsterdam The eye-catcher of the development of Amsterdam's Northern IJ-Oever is the unique Kraanspoor project It is one of the first projects to be realized in this new development area 'River IJ North Bank', which will be turned into a new combined living and working area Ontwerpgroep Trude Hooykaas designed a 3-story building with over 10,000 m² unique working space with a phenomenal view on the river IJ It is build on a historic concrete structure, with the first working floor 15 metres high Kraanspoor displayes the interaction between industrial heritage and state-of-the-art architecture as no other One of the most remarkable features of Kraanspoor is the completely transparent climate façade with double glazing photo: Mieke Vullings Project is not public! 20 photo: Richard Jansen photo: Richard Jansen Public Library Amsterdam Oosterdokskade DL Amsterdam The Public Library is the central one of three large new buildings on the restructured Oosterdokseiland, near the Central Station The main shape of the building is attuned to the surroundings: both the apartments to the west of the library and the street to the eastmust receive enough daylight At the same time, situated as it is beside the open waters of the Oosterdok, the library had to contribute to an attractive skyline A raised plinth offers a refined transitional area between the upper and lower floors, and the reading and study rooms resemble terraces, arranged around large voids The top floor accommodates the library theatre and conference rooms Project is public! 22 Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge Project is not public! 23 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 25 Ernst & Young Tower Antonio Vivaldistraat HP Amsterdam The 87m-high 24-storey tower was commissioned by ING Real Estate - with Ernst & Young as the principal tenants It is one of several office buildings located at the eastern gateway to the mixed-use Zuidas development, south of Amsterdam The appearance of the building is determined by a distinctive 'diagrid' that ensures the tower is readily-identifiable on the drive into Amsterdam The structural steel diagrid is clad in silver aluminium and offset against the dark glazed cladding panels, which reduce the definition of the individual floor levels This creates an elegant and arresting lattice that scales the entire facade For the first month after the completion, the newly opened building is transformed by colour Project is not public! 28 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle The Pyramids Jan van Galenstraat 1051 Amsterdam Marcanti Eiland is a triangular-shaped island in Amsterdam, whose housing plan dates from the early 1980s To top off the island, Soeters van Eldonk architecten has designed a building that gives Marcanti Eiland its own recognizable place in the built environment of Amsterdam The building consists of two triangular-shaped towers (reflecting the contours of the island), slid in each other It contains 82 apartments of differing dimensions; from the sixth story upwards it consists of luxury apartments with a private balcony and a panoramic view of the city Because the housing programme has been kept compact, an extensive parking programme could be built into the design Above ground, this parking garage made room for a public square where social and cultural events can take place Project is not public! 31 photo: Maarten Helle Cancer Center Amsterdam De Boelelaan HZ Amsterdam The Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) is part of and built in the direct vicinity of the VU Medical Centre (VUmc) It is an academical cancer expertise centre for research and treatment The CCA is financed mainly through private means and therefore built their semi-permanent housing with prefabricated building units that look like stacked containers The building has 7 storeys, each covering some 1425 m2 The whole complex was built within a year The team of project members supported the CCA by delivering the building system and their services for cost-price Project is not public! 32 Milos Housing Carolina MacGillavrylaan XA Amsterdam This housing complex Milos is part of a larger mixed-used development around the Science Park Amsterdam, located in the neighbourhood Watergraafsmeer The Science Park is transformed into an international knowledge centre, and next to new educational buildings and related companies, the area is completed with housing Milos is the most western building with a plinth of 4 to 5 layers, and a 45m high tower The complex gives the impression of a modern castle, surrounded by water Pedestrians and cyclists enter the building by passing a bridge The closed inner courtyard is furnished with wooden floors Because of the situation next to the railway tracks, the building has a double façade: a glass screen is placed in front of the thermal skin, and serves as a sound barrier Project is not public! 35 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer School 'tij49 Frans Zieglerstraat HN Amsterdam Blok 49 on IJburg is reserved to accommodate unusual functions and activities such as Blijburg, a temporary beach with its associated bars This temporary school, with a planned lifespan of 20 years, is intended to accommodate the forecast swell in the number of IJburg's schoolchildren The proposal involves a three-storey building with a wide, double-loaded central corridor The three entrances are located in the building's long elevation facing the schoolyard To harmonise the stacked prefabricated elements into a convincing building, the horizontal bands in the façade are strongly articulated The cantilevered strips also function as effective sun screens and shelter for the entrances They are finished with a sprayed rubber layer, white on the outside and with a different brightly coloured soffit per floor The colouring corresponds with the school's internal colour scheme By illuminating the bands at night, the building acts as a beacon in the neighbourhood photo: Luuk Kramer Project is not public! 36 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Lootsbuurt Lootstraat AH Amsterdam The Lootsbuurt in Amsterdam is a neighbourhood of 19th century worker's housing The project is split between two locations on the Jacob van Lennepstraat, one on a corner of the Lootsstraat and the other further along the street Both buildings are flanked by 19th century buildings The corner block contains 20 social housing units of which four are suited for wheelchair users and five are designed for supervised accommodation The corner of the block is open allowing contact between the street and the block's enclosed interior The dwellings are accessed via open double-height galleries that give the project a bright and airy feel While the building attaches itself to its neighbours by adopting their 19th century fenestration and detailing, it distinguishes itself by the subtle execution of these parts of the design The end product represents a contemporary addition that shows respect for its surroundings photo: Roos Aldershoff Project is not public! 37 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Albatros Johan van Hasseltweg WV Amsterdam The area around the van Hasseltweg in Amsterdam North is to be developed, setting large urban scale projects amongst the existing small 'garden-village' housing estates The planning activity is concentrated around the location of the new North/South axis metro station and the Albatros is the first of the projects to come on stream The most important challenge in designing the Albatros was reconciling the confrontation between the scales of the new large developments and that of the surrounding housing In order that the building would not act as a huge barrier within the neighbourhood, it was decided to 'break it up' by dividing it into four tower-like fins arranged on a base or plinth This plinth contains all the commercial and community orientated services and is equal in height to the neighbouring structures The 130 dwellings are housed in the four fins above The building as a whole has the appearance of a large scale sculpture Project is not public!
