2 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Naomi Schiphorst Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 2

3 photo: Jan de Vries photo: Jan de Vries Train Station Bijlmer ArenA Bijlmer Arena Station Amsterdam The movements and speed of passing trains characterize the expressive image of this new trains station Inclined columns, sharp edges and large slanting rays of sunlight that come through the glass roofs Everyting seems to be slurped along with the velocity of the trians The new station has got 6 train tracks, 2 subway tracks and the Arena boulevard runs underneath the whole station Project is public! 4 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Booster Station East Zuiderzeeweg Amsterdam This building, located on Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam, encloses three booster pumps which pump sewage water from Amsterdam East to the sewage purification station in Amsterdam West As the building is a closed box which has to subdue the sounds made by the pumps, the volume has been treated as a sculpture; it folds around the heavy piping inside photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! 5 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Municipal Orphanage IJsbaanpad Amsterdam The layout reconciles the advantages of a centralized structure with those of a decentralizes pattern of pavilions The pavilions system is transformed into a continuous but perforated built volume within which both the pavilions and the main block are identifiable The entrance court is the heart of the building, it's adjoined by a spacious lobby where the building s two internal streets intersect The residential units are arranged in a staggered formation, giving each of them a communication with an individual outdoor space and with the internal street The result is a poly centric building, with an articulation of large and small, inside and outside, in a successions of units, each defined in its own right, while interlocking rhythmically Underlying this balance is a strictly upheld architectural order, consisting of columns, load-bearing walls and architraves which combine to form a square grid of beams The roof domes on top of the grid provide a continuous spatial articulation photo: José F García Martín Public access unknown! 1960 Aldo van Eyck Frans van Meurs Burgerweeshuis Jose_Garcia Ijsbaanpad -Tram: 16, 24 -Bus: 62, 170, 172, N

7 photo: Marcel van der Burg photo: Luuk Kramer Fusion Multicultural centre Joubertstraat XN Amsterdam In the multifunctional building in Amsterdam s Transvaal neighbourhood, the task was to combine a Turkish and Moroccan centre (including prayer spaces and training classrooms) with a more typically Dutch institution for job creation It is highly unusual to accommodate Moroccan, Turkish and Dutch activities under one roof The rooms for Moroccan and Turkish organizations each have their own separate entrances, but these are subordinate to the communal, more assertive, main entrance Together with the central staircase, the latter forms a space for contact and mutual interaction Blending Arabic architectural styles with that of the surrounding Amsterdam School architecture with geometrical brickwork motifs The result is a hybrid architecture whose exterior does not immediately betray what happens inside The ground plan is generic and flexible in design, so that it will be capable of handling different programmes in the future photo: Luuk Kramer Project is public! 8 Hubertushuis Plantage Middenlaan DB Amsterdam Van Eyck's work lies in line with that important tradition of humanitarian modernism central to 20th century Dutch architecture The 6-storey Hubertus House cannot be viewed in isolation, although its social success is clearly a result of the way its particular design was carried out It is concerned with the spirit and the establishment of a comfortable scale for the building of this type and size (an open 'home' for single parents and their children) with the creation of a non-stressful environment, in a block that seems to say 'house' Like so many of Van Eyck's schemes, it was a cooperative effort with contributions from Hannie van Eyck and Theo Bosch in particular ( text from Dennis Sharp Twentieth Century ure: a Visual History p363) Project is public! 9 Apolloschool Willem Witsenstraat AZ Amsterdam In the 1980s, Hertzberger designed the Apollo School, a combination of two different schools with two different educational systems He organized all the classrooms around an internal space, an amphitheatre-like organization that has been wholeheartedly emulated since There are smaller corridors and blocked-out areas that allow students to work outside the classrooms The 1990s were a time of shrinking budgets for school construction in the, said Hertzberger To stretch the money, he spent it on creating cohesive organization This tactic was also a response to the wave of immigration: by organizing space well, students of all languages and levels of understanding could feel comfortable photo: Wing-Ni Lam Project is not public! 1983 Herman Hertzberger Wing-Ni 9

10 photo: Kees Hummel The Bank Herengracht CE Amsterdam A magnificent building, since it is a truly classic, archetypical bank It is robust, regal, and majestic Citizens would not hesitate for a moment to take their savings there The bank was built in 1926 by the architects Ouëndag The building is decorated with exquisite granite sculptures by Lambertus Zijl, as well as a variety of copper and bronze ornaments, including lamps and letterboxes Surprisingly many of these have been preserved, despite the fact that the building was drastically altered and enlarged in the seventies by architects Zwiers and Fontein At that time, the glass roof and the light cove were closed Rijnboutt architects brought this light back: a whole new atrium was made connecting the 25500m2 of office space What is also new, is the establishment of shops in the arcade in the Utrechtsestraat and at the 'plinth' in the Amstelstraat which makes the building look much more open and accessible In june 2010 the renovation of The Bank has been completed Project is not public! 11 photo: +31ARCHITECTS photo: +31ARCHITECTS Houseboat De Omval Omval AA Amsterdam This watervilla has a wide view over the Amstel The villa has two spacious floors and a sunny roof terrace The roof terrace was made possible by lowering the bedroom half a story In this way there is also a logical transition from the ground floor to the basement Due to the strict regulation it was only possible to create watervilla with a small height To still get daylight into the basement a large void has been made, the void connects the two floors together The light in the guest room, also located in the basement, is through a "cuckoo window" just positioned beneath the fireplace in the living room so that no space is lost The split-level principle of the watervilla is accentuated by the round design of the facade photo: +31ARCHITECTS Project is not public! 12 Bombardon school Simon van Collumstraat NA Almere After realizing his Amsterdam schools Hertzberger is one of the few architects who is able to experiment with new types of school buildings within the extremely tight budget The two major schools he is building in Almere both have a linear character, where the classrooms are arranged along an elongated, open central area where the activities take place In The 'Polygoon' the open space is filled with amenities which cross the space like a backbone This backbone is connected with air bridges to a roof garden on the premises The 'Bombardon' which consists of 20 classrooms can be seen as an extrusion of the Apollo schools, wherein oblique steps and bridges cut through the open central region photo: Arnold van Harmelen Project is not public! 1995 Herman Hertzberger ASG Almere archimere 12

13 photo: Erik Hup photo: Erik Hup Pavilion NoorderOOG Waterlandplein NB Amsterdam In 2007, ELA won an international competition for the design of a restaurant pavilion on a renewed square in the north of Amsterdam Due to the building crisis, the project was put on hold for five years In 2012, the client Ymere/AM restarted the project and the pavilion of 300 m2 was built at the end of 2013 The eye-shaped building is located on the edge of the square called "Waterlandplein" and faces a green zone It houses two restaurants photo: Erik Hup Project is public!
