3 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten Project is not public! 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 3

4 Control Building Westerkeersluis Van Diemenstraat CR Amsterdam This control post is an extension to an existing post on the same bridge It is used by the inner-city-water Amsterdam Municipal services for operating bridge nr 346, the bridges of train rails, guarding the harbour, collecting harbour fees and to organise meetings The view between the city and the harbour had to be kept unobstructed That is why a steel-frame structure, with a functional core was made, to lift the over hanging roof The surrounding glass façade provides a 360 view over the surroundings The steel frame roof is covered with a green polyurethane coating The soft green colour refers to the ship building industries, where this colour is used on desk of ships This way the building confirms the industrial use The windows of the meeting room are printed with a 17th century sea scape to block the sun Project is not public! 5 IJ tower Oostelijke Handelskade DN Amsterdam This seventy meters high, 20 stories apartment tower is situated on the dam towards the KNSM Island, in the former docklands, east of the centre of Amsterdam The tower has a regular facade composition with a diagonal window pattern Several 'holes' in the building give it a strong sculpturally and generate a variety of 20 different dwelling types The tower has been sculpted differently at each side The building works as an orientating element in the new dockland area The 3 stories plinth of the tower consists of a fitness club, roof garden, commercial retail spaces and a parking garage Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Contractor Neutelings Riedijk Ingenieursbureau Zonneveld Dura Vermeer Blauwhoed Eurowoningen, Rotterdam Naomi Tram 10 passes by Stop at Van Eesterenlaan 5

7 photo: Het Funen Park photo: Het Funen Park The Funen Park Funenpark AK Amsterdam This is an innovative urban development concept that combines living and working in high city-centre densities with sufficient green space on Het Funen, a former industrial zone on the edge of Amsterdam s city centre It is a concept that incorporates the qualities of diverse typologies: the construction of perimeter blocks along two sides, with a novel interpretation of the garden city model to their rear The perimeter blocks shelter the inner grounds and simultaneously serve as a noise baffler for the railway behind them The inner space is composed of a park landscape with a great diversity of smaller building types, each with a distinctive identity and programme These Hidden Delights were designed by various architects The contributing architects are: de Architekten Cie, De architectengroep, NL s, Geurts en Schulze, Claus en Kaan architecten, DKV Architekten, Architektenburo L Lafour & R Wijk, Van Sambeek en Van Veen architecten photo: Gemeente Amsterdam Project is public! m², Urban planner de Architekten Cie IBC Het Funen Park, Almere MI_MOA Take bus 22 from the Central Station to the Indische Buurt Stop at Oostenburgergracht Walk in the direction the bus is heading, and cross the street at the first crossing, this is the Cruquiuskade At the other side of the railwaytracks you've reached the Funen Park 7

8 photo: Luis Monteiro photo: Luis Monteiro Nescio Bridge Buitenkerkerweg 1095 KL Amsterdam This cycle and pedestrian bridge is the longest in the, spanning the busy Rijn Kanaal in the IJburg district of Amsterdam The result of a close collaboration between architects and engineers, the bridge provides a vital connection for residents of IJburg, a suburb built on recently reclaimed land east of the city, with the Diemerpark at the mainland With its slender form, the bridge slots elegantly into its surroundingsthe bridge has a clear span of 170 m, providing the 10 cm clearance necessary for boats on the canal below The long approaches at either end have e a shallow gradient for cyclists and other bridge users Curved in plan, the bridge is designed to sit elegantly within the reclaimed landscape and to respect its unique ecological habitats A unique feature of this first suspension bridge in the is that the deck is suspended on one side only It is also Wilkinson Eyre s first project in the country photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is public! 2005 Structural engineer Wilkinson Eyre s Arup City of Amsterdam Bjorn_Utpott 24/7 Take tram 26 to IJburg, or tram 9 to Diemen 8

11 photo: architour Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Panamakade AX Amsterdam Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2000 Landscape architect West 8 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi 24/7 in public space The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo 11

16 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is not public! 19 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Milos Housing Carolina MacGillavrylaan XA Amsterdam This housing complex Milos is part of a larger mixed-used development around the Science Park Amsterdam, located in the neighbourhood Watergraafsmeer The Science Park is transformed into an international knowledge centre, and next to new educational buildings and related companies, the area is completed with housing Milos is the most western building with a plinth of 4 to 5 layers, and a 45m high tower The complex gives the impression of a modern castle, surrounded by water Pedestrians and cyclists enter the building by passing a bridge The closed inner courtyard is furnished with wooden floors Because of the situation next to the railway tracks, the building has a double façade: a glass screen is placed in front of the thermal skin, and serves as a sound barrier Project is not public! 24 photo: Iwan Baan Synagogue annex Community Centre Zuidelijke Wandelweg RK Amsterdam SeArch designed the new synagogue annex community center of the Liberal Jewish Congregation in Amsterdam The unstable relationship between Judaism and other religions and the dispersal of the Jewish diaspora have hindered the evolution of a recognized architectural style, this, in contrast to the strong and self-conscious personal Jewish identity Ceremonial traditions and rituals present few recognizable reference points in a synagogue s physical expression And while the identity of a church or a mosque is carved in stone, it is usually conspicuous in its absence with regard to synagogues In this shul the classical parallel installation is reduced to only the heart with the shaft between Biema (pulpit) and Aron Hakodesj (cabinet with the Torah), pointing to the east, being Jerusalem This traditional installation, which was used in the old synagogue for years, as well as the use of daylight are the main principles for the design photo: Iwan Baan Project is public! search MI_MOA Telephone: +31 (0) or info@verbondeu The building is located on a small island in the water that separates the Zuidelijke Wandelweg and the famous cemetery Zorgvlied In about one and a half year, the buildings on the west side will be demolished to create a larger space for water and a newly constructed dock, perpendicular to the Zuidelijke Wandelweg The already constructed bridge to the island built leads to the entrance on the ground floor 24

26 photo: Stefan Mueller photo: Stefan Mueller De Loodsen Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam In the series of new buildings along the IJ harbour, there is a sub-plan called De Loodsen which forms the link between the western and eastern sides of this urban development The ensemble comprises six towers in eleven layers with a slab of five layers along the harbour Two of the towers - apartment blocks are the corners of the plan on the city side This is a highly urbanised context in which both corner towers have been developed as shells, thus giving the letting company maximum flexibility in dividing up each floor The towers are worked out as separate, but at the same time related, buildings They differ from each other in terms of their position, volume and the rhythm of the windows However, they are related in expression: the horizontal concrete railing and the eloquent brickwork The robust character of these buildings harks back to the warehouse buildings which have determined the appearance of the area for so long m² photo: Stefan Mueller Wingender Hovenier en VOF Loodsen (Hopman Interheem en Ymere), Amsterdam winhov 26
