3 HES Amsterdam Fraijlemaborg CV Amsterdam The HES School of Economics and Business is situated a stone's throw away from the Amsterdam Arena The biggest design challenge was clear from the first moment; how to create suitable accommodation for some five thousand, mainly young, students in the sober surroundings of Amsterdam South East? The building has been conceived as a town within a town; as a network of wide and narrow streets, squares and gardens (in the form of "serres", or glazed buffer zones) Countless voids offer sight lines which visually interlink the different levels The building ensures that the users are optimally visible to each other, thereby generating encounters The four 'serres', or conservatories, are glass-enveloped outside spaces with a Mediterranean climate They provide a "break-out space" and can also encompass a variety of activities The large north serre has a step-by-step rising floor, creating a space able to accommodate large gatherings of people Project is public! m² Structural engineer Structural engineer Acoustics consultant Ector Hoogstad en ABT Bouwbedrijf Van der Linden Peutz Consulting Engineers & Associes HES Amsterdam en Hevo Bouwmanagement dirkverwoerd 3

5 The Rock Claude Debussylaan MD Amsterdam The Erick van Egeraat office tower, also known as The Rock, is part of an expressive high-rise urban development south of Amsterdam, named Zuidas Located in the proximity of the city centre and with direct access to the urban network of public transport and highways, the project incorporates the potential of this unique location The ambitious programming of a vibrant, high-density mixture of offices, housing, retail and public space, designed by 9 international architects, all contribute to an exceptional development of metropolitan scale The urban concept for this location as developed by De Architekten Cie, is based on a vertical layering structure with the anatomical analogy of legs, torso and head The Erick van Egeraat office tower challenges this masterplan further and proposes to create an explicit tactile and emotional experience out of the stacked block structure Both an innovative composition of shifted volumes and a transformation from a light to heavy materialisation Project is not public! m², Interior architect Project manager Developer Designed by Erick van Egeraat IPMMC IPMMC Vastgoed Mahler4 de Brauw Blackstone Westbroek 5

6 photo: Julie Fuchs photo: Julie Fuchs Piet Hein Tunnel Service Building C van Eesterenlaan 1011KD Amsterdam The Piet Hein Tunnel is part of the continuing development of the eastern area of Amsterdam and is situated in the midst of several new building projects This project consists of two small service buildings These technical constructions each have a concrete core, enveloped by an asymmetrical skin of perforated steel plates and tilted roof planes In conjunction with the general asymmetry, this emphasizes the 'non-architectural', object-like character of the inaccessible service structures Rather than real, lived-in buildings, these structures function as urban signposts for the tunnel entrances These entrances are characterized by the simple application of profiled aluminium cladding Steel beams are placed crossways over the sober concrete tunnel mouths (text from architect's website) photo: Julie Fuchs Project is not public! m² UNStudio Stedelijk Beheer Amsterdam / Projectbureau Piet Hein Tunnel jfuchs Bus 41 or 43 and tram 10 or

7 photo: Jan Bitter Gallery Borzo Keizersgracht EJ Amsterdam The historic Amsterdam canal house on Keizersgracht 516, which dates back to 1882, used to be an average canal house It now accommodates Gallery Borzo, which opened in January 2006 after a period of careful reconstruction and restoration When the building was assigned for reconstruction in October 2004, its previous structural alternations were rather disguised At the beginning of the 20th century the building was converted into a warehouse In 1932 it was once again remodeled, this time into a bookstore with various routing paths A hanging steel construction was added during this period to allowed the façade to be opened up andallow more natural light into the deep and narrow bookstore A vertical column containing the book elevator spatially balanced these mostly horizontal elements Project is public! m² Wiel Arets s WielAretss photo: Jan Bitter 7

9 UNStudio Tower Gustav Mahlerlaan 1082 PP Amsterdam The UNStudio Tower is located on the South Axis in Amsterdam, which connects Schiphol Airport to the major business areas of Amsterdam South The Tower office typology incorporates considerations about required office layouts, and floor organizations that maximize views and access to light Four inset voids were introduced on the façade of the building to allow for the internal clustering of offices, and to help bring daylight deeper into the floor Each of the inset voids is characterized by a different colour, providing varying identities to individual spaces throughout the building The horizontal stripes on the façade are made of white aluminum panels which vary in size in relation their position on the façade A primary function of these bands is to protect the office space from direct sunlight, whils simultaneously allowing extensive daylight penetration into the floors Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Associate architect UNStudio G&S Bouw van den Oever, Zaaijer & Partners architecten Van Rossum Raadgevende Ingenieurs Mahler 4 VOF, Consortium G&S Vastgoed Technical engineer dirkverwoerd 9

10 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Youth Activity Centre Osdorperban Amsterdam On the Osdorper Ban at the corner of Reimerswaalstraat, is a small but striking pavilion-like building to admire A rectangular volume with an almost transparent, all round glazed ground floor On top is a white painted box body as a high forehead between the surrounding treetops sticks A large part of the tight construction budget was used for the the glass windows downstairs with five meters long and structurally bonded glass doors, for the top is chosen for the cheapest finish available in the : a polyurethane spray facade, resulting in a characteristic bumpy appearance The transparency and clarity of the ground floor was a reply to the fears of local residents that the arrival of a youth center would lead to insecurity on the streets This floor accommodates a walk-in room, a kitchen, a small office and toilets The closed upper house with skylights is an isolated domain for the young people On this layer is an activity room in which can be divided into two photo: Jeroen Meijer Public access unknown! m² Main designer, Landscape architect Atelier Kempe Thill Karres en Brands VOF De Stadstuinen jpmm Bus 63 (Reimerswaalstraat) By bike from the city: Take the Meer & Vaart en Osdorper Ban from the Sloterplas (lake) 10

11 photo: +31ARCHITECTS photo: +31ARCHITECTS Houseboat De Omval Omval AA Amsterdam This watervilla has a wide view over the Amstel The villa has two spacious floors and a sunny roof terrace The roof terrace was made possible by lowering the bedroom half a story In this way there is also a logical transition from the ground floor to the basement Due to the strict regulation it was only possible to create watervilla with a small height To still get daylight into the basement a large void has been made, the void connects the two floors together The light in the guest room, also located in the basement, is through a "cuckoo window" just positioned beneath the fireplace in the living room so that no space is lost The split-level principle of the watervilla is accentuated by the round design of the facade photo: +31ARCHITECTS Project is not public! m² +31ARCHITECTS PLUS31ARCHITECTS 11

13 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: architour Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Panamakade AX Amsterdam Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2000 Landscape architect West 8 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi 24/7 in public space The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo 13

19 photo: Naomi Schiphorst Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Strawinskylaan XZ Amsterdam The new offices for this law firm are located in an existing freestanding building It's located between the new Amsterdam WTC, a dynamic cluster of new towers, and a residential neighbourhood of modest mid-century villas The project was initially only office interior design and grew into an architectural project The existing building had a strongly articulated façade of tinted glass, bow windows, reverse ziggurat corners, and pale cladding While impractical to reclad, it was important to renovate the base building architecture to some degree to improve its presence whilst emphasising its new life The architectural modifications concentrated on a clearly delineated T section through the building plan which encompasses all of the public environment of the building The new façade, whilst being much more transparent, has an integral strength in its finish and construction, respecting the structural matrix of the existing building photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! m² David Chipperfield s Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Naomi Take subway/tram or train to 'Amsterdam Zuid WTC', and walk for another 2 minutes 19

20 photo: Piotr Krajewski Living Tomorrow Holterbergweg Amsterdam Living Tomorrow is a temporary building The project gives an insight in the most innovative technologies that could be integrated in future daily life and working environments The aim to be the most innovative means that five years after the opening, the building will be demolished It is expected that in 2007 all things exhibited and integrated in the building will be out of date and probably already part of the daily life In the pavilion visitors can get acquainted with the products and services, which can enhance the quality of living or working in the near future On the ground floor the entrance, auditorium, event hall, exhibition room, administration and kitchen are located On the four levels above, more exhibition rooms, a small restaurant and other secondary facilities are situated Public access unknown! m² UNStudio Mr Beliën pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski The building was closed for the public in June

24 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is not public! 25 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Lighthouse Kystpromenaden Aarhus Denmark This vivid harbour front development consists of mixed-use residential properties (300 owner occupied and 100 rental), a new harbour promenade, cafes, restaurants, a skybar and open squares The district will be free of cars while the residential properties will consist of 270 flats and 30 terraced houses The additional tower, at a height of 140 metres, would have been the tallest building in Denmark Geological instability caused the construction of the tower to be cancelled The residences will have no rear-sides, but instead a facade treatment is applied from every viewpoint, the characteristic patterns of which are based on the reflections of light in water It is about living the view The architecture has been developed in close collaboration between UNStudio in Amsterdam, 3XN in Aarhus and the urban environment experts Gehl s photo: Adam Mørk Project is not public! 2013 Main designer, UNStudio 3XN Municipality of Aarhus HelleBeelden 25
