3 photo: Daria Scagliola & Stijn Brakkee photo: Daria Scagliola & Stijn Brakkee Lloydbar Oostelijke Handelskade BN Amsterdam After an intensive renovation project led by MVRDV, in 2004, the Lloyd reopened, this time as a one- to five-star hotel A creature of habitual change, the age-old building needed yet another refurbishment in 2008 Hotel owners asked Richard Hutten to change the restaurant He created a freestanding bar that fronts a vertical shop and features an enormous black lamp I wasn t permitted to attach light sources for the bar and shop to the building, says Hutten To make a virtue of necessity, I designed the Lloyd Llamp as part of the drinks cabinet at the middle of the bar The object is a seemingly arbitrary cluster of lamps to which several long rods are affixed, each ending in a spotlight; Hutten s Lloyd Llamp lights the entire space, from top to bottom Currently no plans exist to commercialize the lamp, but design, too, is a creature of habitual change Spider Spot: Like a titanic tarantula, Richard Hutten s Lloyd Llamp erects above the bar in the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam photo: Daria Scagliola & Stijn Brakkee Project is public! 2008 Interior architect Richard Hutten Suzanne Oxenaar and Otto Nan Richard_Hutten_Studio CAR: coming from the A10: Take exit S114 (Zeeburg/Centrum/Artis) and follow the signs for Centrum Follow this road straight ahead It will lead you into the Piet Hein tunnel In the tunnel, keep to the right hand lane When you exit the tunnel turn right at the lights, onto the Piet Heinkade Turn right at the first lights The road takes a sharp turn to the right, you are now on the Oostelijke Handelskade TRAM: Take tram 26 (IJtram) for a direct connection and get off at stop Rietlandpark 3

4 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Naomi Schiphorst Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten photo: Naomi Schiphorst 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 4

6 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 6

8 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Maarten Helle Cancer Center Amsterdam De Boelelaan HZ Amsterdam The Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) is part of and built in the direct vicinity of the VU Medical Centre (VUmc) It is an academical cancer expertise centre for research and treatment The CCA is financed mainly through private means and therefore built their semi-permanent housing with prefabricated building units that look like stacked containers The building has 7 storeys, each covering some 1425 m2 The whole complex was built within a year The team of project members supported the CCA by delivering the building system and their services for cost-price Developer MVRDV De Meeuw Bouwsystemen Cancer Center Amsterdam Bjorn_Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott The closest train station is Zuid-WTC, from which it is about 15 minutes walking You can also take tram/subway 50 to the stop at Amstelveenseweg From here it's about 10 minutes walking Tram 16 and 24 leave from Central Station and stop directly at the Vumc 8

10 photo: Naomi Schiphorst Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Strawinskylaan XZ Amsterdam The new offices for this law firm are located in an existing freestanding building It's located between the new Amsterdam WTC, a dynamic cluster of new towers, and a residential neighbourhood of modest mid-century villas The project was initially only office interior design and grew into an architectural project The existing building had a strongly articulated façade of tinted glass, bow windows, reverse ziggurat corners, and pale cladding While impractical to reclad, it was important to renovate the base building architecture to some degree to improve its presence whilst emphasising its new life The architectural modifications concentrated on a clearly delineated T section through the building plan which encompasses all of the public environment of the building The new façade, whilst being much more transparent, has an integral strength in its finish and construction, respecting the structural matrix of the existing building photo: Naomi Schiphorst m² David Chipperfield s Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Naomi Take subway/tram or train to 'Amsterdam Zuid WTC', and walk for another 2 minutes 10

12 photo: Julie Fuchs photo: Julie Fuchs Piet Hein Tunnel Service Building C van Eesterenlaan 1011KD Amsterdam The Piet Hein Tunnel is part of the continuing development of the eastern area of Amsterdam and is situated in the midst of several new building projects This project consists of two small service buildings These technical constructions each have a concrete core, enveloped by an asymmetrical skin of perforated steel plates and tilted roof planes In conjunction with the general asymmetry, this emphasizes the 'non-architectural', object-like character of the inaccessible service structures Rather than real, lived-in buildings, these structures function as urban signposts for the tunnel entrances These entrances are characterized by the simple application of profiled aluminium cladding Steel beams are placed crossways over the sober concrete tunnel mouths (text from architect's website) photo: Julie Fuchs m² UNStudio Stedelijk Beheer Amsterdam / Projectbureau Piet Hein Tunnel jfuchs Bus 41 or 43 and tram 10 or

13 photo: Piotr Krajewski Living Tomorrow Holterbergweg Amsterdam Living Tomorrow is a temporary building The project gives an insight in the most innovative technologies that could be integrated in future daily life and working environments The aim to be the most innovative means that five years after the opening, the building will be demolished It is expected that in 2007 all things exhibited and integrated in the building will be out of date and probably already part of the daily life In the pavilion visitors can get acquainted with the products and services, which can enhance the quality of living or working in the near future On the ground floor the entrance, auditorium, event hall, exhibition room, administration and kitchen are located On the four levels above, more exhibition rooms, a small restaurant and other secondary facilities are situated Public access unknown! m² UNStudio Mr Beliën pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski The building was closed for the public in June

16 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Loftice De Ruyterkade AB Amsterdam With the development of the South Bank of the IJ, Amsterdam is rapidly acquiring a big new inner city area The small strip of ware and trading houses at the Ruyterkade still has its old historical flair This new office fills a left over gap It has two faces In keeping with the adjoining buildings, the front façade has an imposing character with a stone plinth and a glazed elevation The back is more closed with silver and dark blue profiled steel plates It has a large floor hanging over the railway tracks In between these two is a large glass atrium By its external shape, it is to produce a symbolic link across the railway track joining the old town and river The inside organization is reminiscent of the neo-classical canal house When viewed from a travelling train, the building seems to change its colour from silver to dark blue The name is a fusion of loft and office It reflects the idea of large, open and attractive space of the work environment m² Services engineer Contractor Bastiaan Jongerius ABT Slavenburg Rami Exploitatiemaatschappij bv bastiaanjongerius photo: Luuk Kramer Just behind and next to Central Station, Amsterdam 16

17 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Maarten Helle Booster Station South Spaklerweg 1099 BB Amsterdam One of four new booster sewage pumping stations is situated in an industrial area in the city s Zuideramstel district, on the corner of a busy junction and right next to a railway viaduct The building contains 3 pumps, a high- and low-tension unit, a traveling crane and pipes Because the stainless steel façade is stretched like a tight skin around this minimal programme, the building looks like a streamlined science fiction sculpture Almost like a spaceship The incoming and outgoing pipes, together with the ventilation grilles, are exposed to view on the side of the road and contribute to the booster station s aerodynamic appearance photo: Bjorn Utpott m² Structural engineer Contractor GROUP A ABT JP van Eesteren DWR Waternet Bjorn_Utpott You can not enter the building, or visit the interior, but the exterior is 24/7 visible from the street Subway 53, 54 stop at Van de Madeweg 17

21 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Hermitage Amsterdam Amstel DP Amsterdam photo: Luuk Kramer The Amstelhof building, which was built in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, has been renovated and refurbished to house a branch of the Hermitage Museum from St Petersburg The Hermitage has a collection of three million works of art, far more than can ever be shown in St Petersburg Pieces from the collection were first shown in the Nieuwe Kerk After several successful exhibitions of Russian art, the idea was born to establish an annex of the Hermitage here in Amsterdam Besides fine arts, this centre of Russian culture is used as a venue for concerts and symposiums, houses a library, a documentation centre and shops Project is public! 22 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 34 photo: Adrian Welch Six Dwellings in Borneo Eiland Scheepstimmermanstraat WT Amsterdam The Borneo project is a large scale intervention, in the central harbour at Amsterdam The Six Dwellings are a very small part of it EMBT depart from the existing planning conditions; a house on each side of the street and they transformed it into a single long house that faces both streets The first hypothesis is the abstract planning; a single long house from street to street Then, the small street that existed in the planning becomes an empty house EMBT wanted to investigate the Dutch tradition about single room constructions From this abstract hypothesis, a much more intuitive way of working with living conditions is developed The architect like to play with abstract dimensions that later will become living conditions photo: Adrian Welch Project is public!
