2 photo: João Sousa photo: João Sousa Culture and Congress Center Europaplatz 1 CH-6005 Luzern The KKL Luzern was built in record time, five years, between 1995 and 2000 The work of French architect and American acoustician Russell Johnson replaced Armin Meili s (1933/34) building The construction is divided into three parts and made up of the Concert Hall, a multifunctional Lucerne Hall as well as the Convention Centre with its Auditorium and the Museum of Art Lucerne One of the most important features of the KKL Luzern is that all kinds of different events may take place under the same gigantic roof Not only separately and next door to each other but with transparent boundaries also together These events encompass the fields of culture, convention and cuisine The building stands out especially because of its huge roof, which has become the trademark of the KKL Luzern It is the ideal component to compliment the natural landmark Mount Pilatus and the historical trademark Chapel Bridge photo: João Sousa Floor area/size m² Client Tragerstiftung Joao_Sousa You can join a scheduled public guided tour For reservations phone , inf[at]kkl-luzernch The Culture and Congress Center is right next to the Luzern train station (on your right as you come out of the station) 2

3 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Pius Church Meggen Schlösslistrasse Meggen The exterior of this cubical building in Meggen,, doesn't reveal anything about it's contents; only it's bell tower and a little cross on the roof hint at it's sacriligious function The façade, which looks like a steel frame contruction, is actually made up of very thin translucent plates of 'Penthelian Dionysos' marble (28 mm thick) As translucent as painted glass windows in other churches, the marble lets through daylight in warm tones of brown and yellow, to create a special ambience inside the church photo: Maarten Helle 1966 Franz Füeg HelleBeelden The church is open to visitors all day However, during religious ceremonies (Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings) you may not walk around in the church As the church has a unique ambience, it is frequently used for wedding ceremonies, too (mostly on Saturday afternoons) 3

5 Hotel Astoria Luzern Pilatusstrasse Luzern This extension to the existing hotel was designed by Herzog & de Meuron and hosts 12 light-flooded conference rooms with state of the art infrastructure, as well as 90 new and spacious hotel rooms which are especially desingned for global nomads (text from website hotel) 2007 Herzog and De Meuron Marco_De_Trizio 5

6 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Migros Shopping Centre Hertensteinstrasse Luzern This project was the winning proposal of a competition to substitute a service wing of the Schweizerhof Hotel, a 19th century building, for the new headquarters of Migros department stores It reconciles the architectural and urban demands with those imposed by the commercial needs The site is located in the meeting point between the fabric of the historic centre and the larger one of the lake promenade The shopping centre is a free-standing volume which performs as a profane counterpoint to the neighbouring church of St Matthew The construction adopts a symmetrical and stepped silhouette towards the sides The façade is made of light copper wash panels, whose width determines the basic module; despite being randomly distributed, the glazed panels are hardly noticeable thanks to a fixation system that is furred onto the metallic panels The greenish tone acquired by the copper helps to blend the building with its urban context: the tree-lined promenade along the lakeside photo: José F García Martín Floor area/size m² Landscape designer Client Diener & Diener Stefan Koepfli Genossenschaft Migros / Hotel Schweizerhof Jose_Garcia 6
