4 photo: Norbert van Onna photo: Gijs WTC Tower H Zuidplein 1077 XV Amsterdam KPF architects were commissioned to renew and partly replace the existing complex of four towers, connected at ground level by an uninspiring and outdated podium The podium was demolished, replacing it with a number of new structures under a 300m x 100m curved lightweight roof Part of the renovation includes a new sixteen-story tower looking over the busy A10 motorway The structure houses highly serviced office space and a double height dealing room Timber screens and coloured panels, set behind a glazed skin, add a rich texture and warm appearance to the façade Project is not public! 5 photo: Gijs photo: Gijs Toyo Ito Gustav Mahlerplein MS Amsterdam The tower Toyo Ito (the building is named after its designer) is part of the Mahler 4 complex on the international business centre the Zuidas in Amsterdam Together with its neighbor Viñoly it is one of the most striking and recognizable buildings so far The building has several glass windows or holes in it The idea behind these voids is to enter the outside life into the building and to add light and space to the interior The first 6 floors are mainly occupied with offices, for the 370 employees The upper floors, in the second part of the building are reserved for meeting rooms This way the employees can reach their workspace faster, while meetings are held in the most elevated spaces Project is not public! 6 Rembrandttower Amstelplein HA Amsterdam De Rembrandttoren is the highest skyscraper of Amsterdam and is named after the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn The tower is situated at the Omval, in the Amstel, just south of the Amstelstation The tower is 149,85 m high, including the 15 m antenna The 35 storeys house 56 different companies In 2002 the tower was in the national news, when a 59 year old man entered the building and took several hostages, trying to indicate his displeasure with "manipulation by resellers of widescreen televisions" The man claimed they are guilty of selling "creative nonsense" He felt he was forced to buy a widescreen TV because movies showed black borders on old TV s photo: Gijs Project is not public! 8 photo: Daria Scagliola photo: Daria Scagliola OZW De Boelelaan HV Amsterdam The OZW health care and well-being training institute is a new landmark for the architectural landscape of the VU University It embodies an innovative training concept that combines intermediate and higher level vocational training programmes and university programmes The softly shaped brick walls that bring to mind the Amsterdam School are in keeping with the nature of the training programmes The window spacing emphasizes the main outlines of the exterior and immediately draws attention to the transparency and vitality of the interior: a playful combination of training centres around atria From the south side, the atria gradually and diagonally lend access to the facilities From the base, one can see al the way up to the sixth floor The utility core is incorporated in the 'back bone' The private offices are at the far ends of the building The public base is transparent and the mysterious volume of the lecture hall inside catches the eye photo: Daria Scagliola Project is public! 10 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Hermitage Amsterdam Amstel DP Amsterdam photo: Luuk Kramer The Amstelhof building, which was built in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, has been renovated and refurbished to house a branch of the Hermitage Museum from St Petersburg The Hermitage has a collection of three million works of art, far more than can ever be shown in St Petersburg Pieces from the collection were first shown in the Nieuwe Kerk After several successful exhibitions of Russian art, the idea was born to establish an annex of the Hermitage here in Amsterdam Besides fine arts, this centre of Russian culture is used as a venue for concerts and symposiums, houses a library, a documentation centre and shops Project is public! 11 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 12 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Dirk Verwoerd De Kikker Evertsweertplantsoen RK Amsterdam Two primary schools, a day-care centre and an area health authority share a new, green complex: a Community School in the neighbourhood Osdorp The goal is to encourage interaction between the groups The design allows each individual part of the building to function at its best Each classroom, for example, has a block containing a cloakroom, toilets, kitchen, (computer) work stations and a mezzanine The whole complex surrounds two inner courtyards in the form of a communal assembly hall and winter garden This forms the basis for the placing of two playgrounds One, for the youngest children, is safely fenced off, the other, for the older and local children has a large platform The whole supporting section of the building is made of wood, making it light in terms of weight and in its overall effect Wood is also a tactile, soft, colourful and varied material, this makes the whole building much more welcoming The project was nicknamed 'The Frog' (in Dutch: De Kikker) photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! 21 Atradius David Ricardostraat 1066 JS Amsterdam With its dynamic, sculptural design, the new head office of the Atradius insurance bank is a conspicuous eye-catcher along Amsterdam s Johan Huizingalaan To break with the individuality-focused working atmosphere that is so characteristic of the world of insurance banking, the design is based on communication and human contact Space to meet one another was the theme on which the spatial organisation of the plan of requirements was based Areas in which employees of different departments can meet one another are created by arranging a large number of voids - 11 in total across the building in the form of green atria These atria differ in shape and height and are intended to serve as municipal parks or tree-lined squares The parks are connected via stairs, enabling people to follow an interesting route through the entire building Superfluous parts of the basic volume - the rectangular box have been cut away to obtain a dynamic crystal shape (OZ-P architects) Project is public! 23 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Ernst & Young Tower Antonio Vivaldistraat HP Amsterdam The 87m-high 24-storey tower was commissioned by ING Real Estate - with Ernst & Young as the principal tenants It is one of several office buildings located at the eastern gateway to the mixed-use Zuidas development, south of Amsterdam The appearance of the building is determined by a distinctive 'diagrid' that ensures the tower is readily-identifiable on the drive into Amsterdam The structural steel diagrid is clad in silver aluminium and offset against the dark glazed cladding panels, which reduce the definition of the individual floor levels This creates an elegant and arresting lattice that scales the entire facade For the first month after the completion, the newly opened building is transformed by colour Project is not public! 27 Booster Station East Zuiderzeeweg Amsterdam This building, located on Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam, encloses three booster pumps which pump sewage water from Amsterdam East to the sewage purification station in Amsterdam West As the building is a closed box which has to subdue the sounds made by the pumps, the volume has been treated as a sculpture; it folds around the heavy piping inside Project is not public! 28 The Pyramids Jan van Galenstraat 1051 Amsterdam Marcanti Eiland is a triangular-shaped island in Amsterdam, whose housing plan dates from the early 1980s To top off the island, Soeters van Eldonk architecten has designed a building that gives Marcanti Eiland its own recognizable place in the built environment of Amsterdam The building consists of two triangular-shaped towers (reflecting the contours of the island), slid in each other It contains 82 apartments of differing dimensions; from the sixth story upwards it consists of luxury apartments with a private balcony and a panoramic view of the city Because the housing programme has been kept compact, an extensive parking programme could be built into the design Above ground, this parking garage made room for a public square where social and cultural events can take place Project is not public! 32 Sportpark Olympia Fence Olympiaplein 1076 Amsterdam Artist Ruud-Jan Kokke has designed a new fence of 1 kilometre to circumfere the sports complex Olympiaplein in Amsterdam The square used to be part of the Olympic Games complex and is located in the middle of an urban district Hollow on the inside and round on the outside, the fence this way embraces the 'inside feeling' of the square The visual poles are Lombardy poplars at every twenty metres around which the fence is winded On the south side, a text commemorating famous Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen was integrated in the filigree on top of the fence, next to the main entrance gate Project is public! 37 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Lootsbuurt Lootstraat AH Amsterdam The Lootsbuurt in Amsterdam is a neighbourhood of 19th century worker's housing The project is split between two locations on the Jacob van Lennepstraat, one on a corner of the Lootsstraat and the other further along the street Both buildings are flanked by 19th century buildings The corner block contains 20 social housing units of which four are suited for wheelchair users and five are designed for supervised accommodation The corner of the block is open allowing contact between the street and the block's enclosed interior The dwellings are accessed via open double-height galleries that give the project a bright and airy feel While the building attaches itself to its neighbours by adopting their 19th century fenestration and detailing, it distinguishes itself by the subtle execution of these parts of the design The end product represents a contemporary addition that shows respect for its surroundings photo: Roos Aldershoff Project is not public! 38 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Albatros Johan van Hasseltweg WV Amsterdam The area around the van Hasseltweg in Amsterdam North is to be developed, setting large urban scale projects amongst the existing small 'garden-village' housing estates The planning activity is concentrated around the location of the new North/South axis metro station and the Albatros is the first of the projects to come on stream The most important challenge in designing the Albatros was reconciling the confrontation between the scales of the new large developments and that of the surrounding housing In order that the building would not act as a huge barrier within the neighbourhood, it was decided to 'break it up' by dividing it into four tower-like fins arranged on a base or plinth This plinth contains all the commercial and community orientated services and is equal in height to the neighbouring structures The 130 dwellings are housed in the four fins above The building as a whole has the appearance of a large scale sculpture Project is not public!
