Cafe De Unie Mauritsweg JT Rotterdam During the bombing of the city centre of Rotterdam on the 14th of May 1940 in World War II, the original building by JJP Oud was destroyed It stood at the Coolsingel In 1986 the façade was reproduced by architect Carel Weeber at the Mauritsweg, in a part of Rotterdam that was spared from the bombs The design is a perfect example of the Dutch artistic moment De Stijl with its use of primary colours and simple abstract composition of vertical and horizontal directions Next to the Rietveld-Schröderhuis in Utrecht it is a very clear cut completion of the ideals of the movement The ground floor houses a bar and restaurant In the back is a small theatre 1925 JJP Oud De Unie NGHM photo: Rob Niemantsverdriet About 5 minutes walking from central station Leave the train station and walk straight on, in the Mauritsweg It is halfway on the left 9

photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Kiefhoek Hendrik Idoplein Rotterdam The Kiefhoek rises in a working class quarter in southern Rotterdam Oud projected a complete modern neighbourhood, keeping the traditional concept of the street as an exterior room completely delimited, like HP Berlage defended By designing elongated rows of 300 standardized dwellings, Oud elaborated the concept of Existenz-minimum for low-budget public housing The blocks have an unitary aspect Most houses were meant for two families and had very compact ground plans without corridors, while along the short side-streets, larger houses were erected for big families Although Oud had wished to build the estate in concrete, all houses had to be constructed in brick and the foundations were reduced to a minimum, both for economic reasons The horizontalizing, white-rendered exteriors had plinths in yellow brick and were enlivened by primary colours Two round-cornered shops, a cubic ornament-less church, a hot-water station, playgrounds and small gardens completed Kiefhoek estate photo: José F García Martín 1930 JJP Oud Jose_Garcia Booked visit 10

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Kunsthal Westzeedijk AA Rotterdam A complex, bold and amazing exposition space, a museum without collection, the Kunsthal presents culture in the widest sense of the word: old art, new art, design, photography - from elitist to popular The site presented a dual condition: the southern edge is bordered by the Maasboulevard, a 'highway' on top of a dike The northern side, a level lower, faces the Museum Park - conventional contemplation With these given, and the fact that these crossings would divide the square site into 4 parts, the challenge was: how to design a museum as 4 autonomous projects - a sequence of contradictory experiences which would nevertheless form a continuous spiral circuitthe pedestrian ramp is split, with a glass wall separating the outside, which is open to the public, from the inside, which is part of the circuit A second ramp, running parallel and reversed, is terraced to accommodate an auditorium, and beneath it the restaurant On the level where the 2 ramps cross, is the main entrance photo: Rotterdam Marketing Floor area/size m² Structural engineer OMA - Rem Koolhaas ARUP City of Rotterdam Naomi Tuesday - Saturday 10 am to 5 pm Sundays and public holidays 11 am to 5 pm Closed on Mondays, Queensday (April 30th), Christmas Day and New Year's Day Tours and special receptions on request More information and reservations: apply to Buro Mooi Gedaan: > phone: > mooigedaan@planetnl Public transport: We advice you to come by public transport The Kunsthal Rotterdam is located in Museumpark, a 20-minute walk from the main railway station (Centraal Station) Or take a number 5 tram to Willemsplein (stop Vasteland), or a number 8 tram to Spangen (stop Erasmus MC) Metro stations Eendrachtsplein and Leuvehaven are a 5-minute walk away 11

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Souterrain Tram Tunnel Grote Marktstraat BH Den Haag Urban plans to make The Hague denser (space to expand is only found inside the city, since it s confined by sea, highway and neighbouring cities) ánd minimize traffic on street level has urged the municipality to go underground The city had a long and difficult process developing this multistory 1250 m long underground tunnel with two stops for trams combined with 500 parking spaces The construction floor was leaking and damaged the surroundings So the whole tunnel was entirely flooded to keep surrounding buildings form collapsing It got several nicknames tramtanic and swimtunnel Construction could only be finished under high pressure air to prevent the water to enter After 4 years of delay, costs largely exceeded budget (130 million euro) and the Dutch government started asking questions When finished and all problems left behind, the project won several prizes It definitely proved architecture can have a positive effect when applied to the rigor of transport pragmatism photo: Naomi Schiphorst Floor area/size m² Contractor Structural engineer Contractor OMA - Rem Koolhaas Ballast Nedam SAT Construction Corp Strukton Den Haag Municipality Naomi In between Spui and Grote Markt Straat are several underground stations Please be aware that you need a valid transportation ticket and that photography is not permitted in the stations 12

photo: Miguel Villegas photo: Miguel Villegas Extension to Utrecht Townhall Korte Minrebroederstraat GG Utrecht Utrecht's town hall has an age-long history The administration of the city of Utrecht has been seated at this location for over 650 years In the course of time some ten medieval buildings and city castles were interconnected that still form the core of the premises The result was an overly compact and impenetrable labyrinth with many different floor levels In 1997 the local government commissioned Spanish architect Enric Miralles ( ) to design a building that was open, transparent and inviting The aim was to combine the existing monumental parts, which were to be renovated, with a new wing Miralles combined modern architectural ideas with the historical elements in a very personal way The main entrance was moved; it now is located in the external wall that for centuries had been the back of the premises In the process, this relocation resulted in the formation of a new square The architect's signature is equally visible in the interior photo: Miguel Villegas Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT City of Utrecht arquitextonica You can get a tour through the town hall on Monday - Friday between hr Other ours are also possible, but only on request Reservation is necessary: tel + 31(0) , on working days between hr post@gildeutrechtnl Website: wwwgildeutrechtnl Costs per person: 3,00 Loca architecture centre AORTA also organises tours though the building (1,5 hour)

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Bjorn Utpott Minnaert Leuvenlaan CE Utrecht All circulation space of this central university building has been concentrated in one big hall on the "piano nobile" of the building It constitutes the communal gathering place and living room for all staff and students in this part of the campus and gives access to the restaurant, the study centre and the laboratories In the middle the hall has a large pond of 10 x 50 metres that collects the rainwater and is used as a cooling device for the building This hall is actually outside The facade of the building is clad with undulating sprayed concrete of pigmented red earth color The Minnaert Building is part of the Faculties of Geosciences, Physiscs and Astronomy Hence the brown earthy colors on the outside, and the cave-like feeling that arouses in the central hall Profdr Marcel Gilles Jozef Minnaert (Brugge, 1893) was astronomic and chemo-physicist photo: Bjorn Utpott Floor area/size m² Interior architect, Contractor Structural engineer Neutelings Riedijk MI_MOA JP van Eesteren ABT Universiteit van Utrecht To get to and around the University campus, you can take bus city lines number 11 and 12 from Utrecht Central Station 15

photo: Ernst Moritz photo: Ernst Moritz Erasmuslaan Erasmuslaan AZ Utrecht After the Rietveld-Schröder-House Rietveld designed a row of 4 mansions on the Erasmuslaan in Utrecht in 1931 This block is on the far side of the ring road The contrast is enormous: with their large quantities of glass, white stucco and steel shutters, these houses complied totally with the aesthetic ideal of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement, the Dutch functionalist architecture of the 1930s The brilliant colours of the Stijl period have vanished completely Number 9 was designed in October 1931 by Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder as a model home On this occasion Rietveld presented a number of furniture designs from previous years He hoped that, given sufficient interest, the firm of Metz & Co would produce these pieces of furniture in series This however only occurred with the tube-framed chairs Erasmuslaan 9 was purchased in 1999 and restored by the Hendrick de Keyser Society The Centraal Museum has reconstructed the original model interior and opened the premises to the public photo: Dirk Verwoerd 1931 Gerrit Rietveld Truus Schröder MI_MOA You may visit the Rietveld Schröder House and the Model Home on the Erasmuslaan 9 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Reservations are strongly recommended Make a reservation by ing to rhreserveringen[at]centraalmuseumnl See also wwwcentraalmuseumnl The Centraal Museum takes care of the transport in a luxury 'Rietveld route' shuttle bus This bus leaves the Centraal Museum at fixed times: 1145 am, 1245 pm, 145 pm and 245 pm It takes you to all Rietveld-designs and back to the Centraal Museum (address: Nicolaaskerkhof 10, Utrecht) 16

photo: Ernst Moritz photo: Dirk Verwoerd Rietveld Schröderhuis Prins Hendriklaan Utrecht A visit to the Rietveld Schröder House remains a fascinating experience This house is the only building ever realized on the basis of the architectural principles of De Stijl Typical features are the use of the Stijl colours red, blue and yellow, in combination with white, grey and black, the relation between interior and exterior and the unity between the free-standing pieces of furniture and the fitted parts of the interior According to Rietveld and Schröder one had to have an active attitude to life For them too living in a home is a conscious act The furnishing of the house reflects this conviction The occupant has to perform a transaction for every activity: the bathroom is created by opening out a wall, while the sleeping areas could be screened off with sliding walls, and privacy was obtained by placing shutters in front of the windows The house is literally a machine for living in photo: Jannes Linders 1924 Gerrit Rietveld Truus Schröder MI_MOA On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can visit the Rietveld Schröderhuis The house can only be visited with a tour of max 10 people You can reserve a place in the tour by sending an to rhreserveringen[at]centraalmuseumnl There is a special Rietveld bus that leaves from the Centraal Museum at 1145, 1245, 1345 and 1445 hr It takes you to all Rietveld-designs and back to the Centraal Museum (address: Nicolaaskerkhof 10, Utrecht) 17

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst University Library UBU Heidelberglaan CS Utrecht This black box is both praised and hated Let s hear the architect: It is a place where people can work in a concentrated fashion, but also one where they can meet others without the need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the building radiates The book depots divide the space into zones interconnected by stairs and slopes All in black figured concrete on which a partly double-glazed facade to which a silk-screened figurative pattern has been applied in order to let natural light in Based on the idea that silent communication is important in a building where there is hardly any talking, the atmosphere had emphasis on creating a sense of security That was essential for choosing a black interior A light, shiny floor provides enough reflection to illuminate the books and white tables make it possible to read The bar, lounge, reception, auditorium, desks, are all fitted with red rubber, thereby breaking down the mono-functionality of the library program Floor area/size m² Wiel Arets s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst mo-fr: sa: su: From Utrecht Central Station take bus 11 or 12 towards "De Uithof", the university campus 18

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Viktor Ramos Educatorium Leuvenlaan CE Utrecht Situated in the centre of the University Campus the Uithof, just outside the centre of Utrecht, this building is most famous for its use of concrete The concrete construction of the building folds and forms the floor, wall and ceiling in one curved motion In the ceiling, steel reinforcement bars emerge from the exposed concrete slab Steel and concrete dissociate allowing each material to work at optimum efficiency: the 20cm thick concrete slab is made to span 21 metres "Composed of two planes which fold to accommodate a range of distinct programs including an outdoor plaza, two lecture halls, cafeteria and a testing facility Planes interlock to create a single trajectory in which the entire university experience socialization, learning, examination is encapsulated" Bad detailing or lack of proper maintenance has caused the facade to look old and worn out, even after a couple of years photo: Piotr Krajewski Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Contractor OMA - Rem Koolhaas ABT BAM University of Utrecht NGHM The building is public and open to visit freely, at workdays on office hours For guided tours, contact the Utrecht ure Centre at aorta@aortanu and tours@aortanu or call +31 (0) Buslines 11, 12 and 12-S go from Utrecht Central Station to the Uithof university campus Call the reception of the Educatorium at +31 (0)

photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Lilian Visser Sport College Leidsche Rijn Maartvlinder DA Utrecht Utrecht Situated in the Leidsche Rijn, a newly built housing district within the periphery of Utrecht, the Sports Campus aims to contribute a public and rather iconographic aspect to the predominantly low-rise area, lacking points of recognition Two schools, divided up into four wings, stretched out onto the boundaries of the terrain, are organized around a centrally positioned volume containing the shared facilities The campus facilitates, next to an educational program, a gymnasium, vocational school, in and outdoor sports facilities and a cultural centre The structure and concrete walls are mostly left raw, to create a rough interior and to sustain the adolescent behavior of its users, and also meets the limited budgets Young sports talents are able to combine school with intense training Approaching the campus complex, one notices a subtle movement in the shiny black panels, in which a constant graduated relief has been cast, offering subtle tactile qualities on the exterior facade photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is not public! 23 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Municipal Orphanage IJsbaanpad Amsterdam The layout reconciles the advantages of a centralized structure with those of a decentralizes pattern of pavilions The pavilions system is transformed into a continuous but perforated built volume within which both the pavilions and the main block are identifiable The entrance court is the heart of the building, it's adjoined by a spacious lobby where the building s two internal streets intersect The residential units are arranged in a staggered formation, giving each of them a communication with an individual outdoor space and with the internal street The result is a poly centric building, with an articulation of large and small, inside and outside, in a successions of units, each defined in its own right, while interlocking rhythmically Underlying this balance is a strictly upheld architectural order, consisting of columns, load-bearing walls and architraves which combine to form a square grid of beams The roof domes on top of the grid provide a continuous spatial articulation photo: José F García Martín Public access unknown! 1960 Aldo van Eyck Frans van Meurs Burgerweeshuis Jose_Garcia Ijsbaanpad -Tram: 16, 24 -Bus: 62, 170, 172, N

photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Four Towers Jan van Zutphenplantsoen 1069 Amsterdam In Osdorp, SW of Amsterdam, major changes are under way to transform a currently vacant zone into a residential district connected to the existing housing area alongside it All towers are sited according to the given urban footprint and take up the maximum envelope, giving a total of 390 apartments evenly distributed over 11 levels The plan allows for a high degree of interchangeability of layouts so as to offer a diversity of apartment types A central core and a number of strategically positioned service shafts enable the different types to mirror and shift not only with regard to each other but also in terms of the spatial configuration within one apartment An aluminum cladding indicates the separation between the apartments, while the mirroring concept of the plan results in a playful façade pattern ranging between alteration and iteration, between standardizing and individualizing The twofold elements bring about a subtle discontinuation within the unitized surface photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! 2008 Wiel Arets s Delta Forte jpmm 27

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Chile Haus Fischertwiete Hamburg Germany This enormous Brick Expressionist building spans a street, the Fischertwiete The building is famed for its top, which is reminiscent of a ship's prow, and the façades, which meet at a very sharp angle at the corner of the Pumpen and Niedernstrasse The best view of the building is from the east Because of the accentuated vertical elements and the recessed upper stories, as well as the curved façade on the Pumpen street, the building has, despite its enormous size, a touch of lightness It was commissioned by the shipping magnate Henry B Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile, hence the name Chile House The location's close vicinity to the Elbe river necessitated a specially sealed cellar, and heating equipment was constructed in a caisson that can float within the building, so the equipment can't be damaged in the event of flooding 1924 Fritz Höger Henry B Sloman Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst 28
