History The Tudors was part of two houses formerly known as Newbie House and Holyrood House, joined by a bridge. Formerly the water cure establishment of Dr Gully, who bought Newbie House for men and built Holyrood House for women and joined them by a 'Bridge of Sighs', circa Gothic styles. Dr Gully, famed as one of the most imminent hydropathic doctors in Malvern in the midnineteenth century. It is interesting to note that Dr Gully was the first chairman of the local Board, which was grappling with dire water shortages as the town expanded. Having his own water supplies it was in Dr Gully's commercial interest to prevent competitive doctors having prolific supplies for hydrotherapy. When Dr Gully left Malvern in 1872, Tudor House was a successful and busy Boarding House. After Dr Gully's death in 1883 the property passed to his son, William Court Gully. Tudor House was leased from 1876 in the "lease for life policy" to Elijah Finn, who ran it as successful Boarding House. Finn was eminently successful; he had 60 to 80 people on his visitor list all year round. He died in July 1886 and in the following August the property was bought by the Misses Brown. That year, 1887, was the year of Malvern's first drought; the reservoirs were empty, the springs dry, and the water as precious as gold. The local board located all prolific private sources and, with the owner s permission, pumped water into the mains. In October they installed pipes, and a gas engine to the Tudor Baths spring and pumped gallons daily. Features Of The Building The left-hand, plainer building is rendered. Two storeys with 2 stepped gables with finials and string cornice. Two rectangular bays of 2 storeys, with windows of 10-lights, the upper arched, on both floors, carved bases. The centre section set back, with 2 similar but smaller windows with rectangular drip moulds. String between storeys. Arched doorway to the right. Veranda to the left side. The bridge between the 2 houses is asymmetrical, with a roof of moulded tiles. The right-hand house is
3 of 2 storeys and tall basement in red brick. It has 3 moulded gables, with 2 smaller to the right, which break forward. The 3 larger gables each have an attic window of 4-lights above a full-height bay with windows of 10- lights above a basement window of 2-lights. The 2 smaller gables have windows of 4- lights above a door and a gabled porch respectively. There is a battlemented section to the left, and a turret with round-headed paired lights and cupola. Property Comprises The property can be accessed via three entrances, the first one being on Wells Road with lift access to further communal hall leading to the front door of the apartment. The interior of the apartment has been converted to a high standard to include High Ceilings throughout, Wooden doors, electric heating, a wealth of storage including a cellar, a rear entrance from the dining room to the terrace.
