Historical Note Before Harrods and Selfridges there was Robinsons, one of the first great London department stores, which stood on a corner of Oxford Circus for 100 years before the brand disappeared in the 70 s. The founder of this company, Peter Robinson, left a multimillion pound fortune to his son Joseph, who used it to build this grand estate at the height of the Victorian era. Lewins was designed in the Gothic style by the Scottish architect John Brydon, a colleague of Richard Norman Shaw. It was the Downton of its day, employing dozens of servants, farmers, labourers and horsemen to service Joseph, Eliza and their 10 children.
