3 HISTORY Spilsill Court is an impressive country house of architectural interest and historic note and designated a Grade II listing. The original house is believed to have been built in the late 13th century and the first owners were the de Speldselle family, whom we understand took their name from the site. Over the centuries the house has passed in to different ownership including Walter Mainey who was Sherriff of Kent during the reign of Elizabeth I and it was during this time that the chapel, now the sitting room, was built on the north side of the house for the sect of the Particular Baptists and the local villagers of Staplehurst. In 1920 Spilsill Court was bought by Miss Christina Knowles who transformed the gardens and grounds into what they are today and built a chapel at the bottom of the rose garden in remembrance of her mother. DESCRIPTION Coming to the market for the first time in over 50 years, Spilsill Court is an idyllically situated small country estate atop a long private drive in a rural country lane setting. The thriving village of Staplehurst lies just over a mile to the west where there are a good range of shops, amenities and mainline station with frequent links to London and the Continent. The principal residence, with its medieval origins still very much in evidence, consists of a substantial Grade II listed country house dating in part from the 16th century with 19th or 20th century additions. GARDENS, GROUNDS & OUTBUILDINGS Spilsill Court is approached via a long private lane, flanked by mature trees, indigenous mixed hedging and neighbouring pasture. Once over the cattle grid, the drive bypasses The Court Barn and Spilsill Bungalow and continues around to the main house with a spur leading off to the various outbuildings, cottage and detached barn to the north.
