4 LOCAL INFORMATION Nearby Mealsgate is a small hamlet that grew up along an old Roman road, now the A595, and lies north of the River Ellen. All Hallows Old Church (not in use) dates from Norman times; a white marble statue to George Moore, a rich merchant philanthropist born in Mealsgate who made his money in the lace trade, survives in the church. In nearby Fletchertown there is the New All Hallows church in which there is a plaque (1962) to Moore from the French government thanking him for his help to the poor of Paris in the 1871 siege; there is also a marble tablet to his memory is in Carlisle Cathedral. The Coach House is surrounded by open countryside and yet is within easy reach of the A595 at Mealsgate and is therefore well located for access to the major towns such as Cockermouth, Carlisle and Penrith and within easy reach of the Lake District National Park. Nearby Aspatria has local shops and facilities while the market town of Cockermouth provides everyday amenities with a wide range of shops, supermarkets, chemists, medical and dental surgeries, sports centre and many restaurants and pubs. Carlisle provides further comprehensive cultural, recreational and shopping facilities. There is a choice of popular primary schools in the area and for secondary school there are highly regarded schools in Keswick, Cockermouth and Wigton. For the commuter the A595 provides easy access to Carlisle and onwards to M6 for links to the north and south. The rail station at Carlisle provides regular services to major UK cities north and south and also services east to Newcastle. EXTERNALLY To the front of the property there is a parking area. There is a lawned area to the side and cobbled drive with further parking. The external areas are low maintenance and two patios have been created to enjoy the beautiful views at various times of the day. THE PROPERTY 3 The Coach House is one of three properties created from the original coach house in the grounds of Whitehall country house, which was built in 1861 by Anthony Salvin for a Mr George Moore. The former coach house underwent a complete renovation to an extremely high standard and now offers flexible, fully modernised accommodation in attractive, mature grounds. The property is surrounded by open countryside and lies within easy reach of the Lake District National Park. The ground floor kitchen/diner room is fitted with a range of modern units, including 1¼ bowl sink and drainer and AIMS controlled black AGA. The drawing room, which was the original coach house, has floor to ceiling arched windows to one wall together with a set of glazed doors offering views of the cobbled courtyard, provides a fabulous entertaining space. There is also a utility room, which is fitted with a range of units, sink and is plumbed for a washing machine, and a cloakroom on this floor. To the first floor the dual aspect master bedroom has a built in wardrobe and en-suite shower room which is fitted with a corner shower, wash hand basin and WC. There are two further double bedrooms, one with a Juliette balcony with courtyard views, and both have fitted wardrobes. The tiled bathroom is fitted with a panelled bath with shower over, wash hand basin and WC. SERVICES Mains electricity and water, private drainage and oil fired central heating. DIRECTIONS From Cockermouth town centre head north out of the town on Gote Road/Goat Brow. At the roundabout join the A595 towards Carlisle and follow this road for 8.5 miles. Approximately 0.25 mile after the left turn to Torpenhow, the private drive beside the lodge can be found on the left. Proceed along the private drive, bearing right at the top and upon reaching the coach house, turn right and the parking area is on the right hand side.
