4 An Enchanting Town The Gate is located in Alresford, a charming town in south west Hampshire. Alresford was recently voted as the South East s favourite market town by Country Life Magazine and is home to quaint colour-washed Georgian houses, riverside walks and picturesque scenery. This elegant town is home to a plethora of retail opportunities with high end boutiques, art galleries, antiques and interiors shops, nestled alongside traditional shops including a butcher, fishmonger and bakery. The historical Broad Street is still used as the focal point for the town s market hub for festivities. Continental markets are held each year between April and December, including very popular Christmas Markets. It is said that Alresford is a perfect place for a leisurely stroll and it is easy to see why. Home to beautiful expanses of water including the River Itchen (also known as the River Alre), water meadows, fisheries and Old Alresford Pond; many hours can be spent admiring the views and appreciating the local flora and fauna, including wildfowl, kingfishers and otters. A variety of cafés, tea rooms and bistros offer a tempting array of refreshments whilst many local pubs and popular Indian and Italian restaurants cater for all tastes. Many of the local establishments offer alfresco dining, which include stunning views of Old Alresford Pond. Close to the town centre, Arlebury Park provides a peaceful oasis with leisure activities for all ages; play areas, tennis courts, football pitches and cricket squares can be enjoyed within the park, while an aerial runway is located near the recently built Petanque Terrain and picnic area.

6 Convenient Connections Alresford is famous for its link to the watercress industry and holding the Watercress Festival in May. The Mid-Hants Railway is the town s own steam railway line and is affectionately known as the Watercress Line, due to its original use of transporting fresh watercress to London. The beautifully restored station is a destination in itself, harking back to a bygone age. These impressive steam engines will take you on a journey stretching from Alton to Alresford through 10 miles of picturesque Hampshire countryside. Special events are held throughout the year including a day with Thomas the Tank Engine, War on the Line, steam galas and open days offering something for everyone. In the town itself, there is a primary school, as well as Perins School which is a Sports College and Secondary School with academy status. The surrounding towns and villages provide yet a wider choice of education including the renowned Winchester College for Boys, one of the original nine public schools, believed to be the oldest continuously running school in the country. Southampton is under an hours drive south of Alresford, and is also accessible by bus. From the docks, the Red Funnel Ferry facilitates visits to the Isle of Wight for day visits or even a relaxing break, Southampton also offers premier shopping and leisure with West Quay, boasting over 100 stores under one roof and a dedicated food terrace showcasing a range of eateries. Those wishing to commute from The Gate are well served with trains from nearby Alton taking about an hour and ten minutes to arrive at London Waterloo. Both Gatwick and Heathrow airports are just over an hour away due to easy access to the A31 and M3. The historic city of Winchester is less than 20 minutes away by both car and public transport and offers not only a fun day out for the family, but excellent shopping facilities including sizeable departments stores with a wide array of both high street and designer brands.
