The vendor believes it to have been built for the works manager of the nearby wire furnace (long gone). In its time the really charming house has been a guest house (Described as such in the 1901 Kelly s Directory for Monmouthshire), but is now a versatile and particularly spacious family home. Many original features are still intact, with much of the stone believed to have been sourced from the nearby Abbey. The house has continually been updated, the most recent update being the installation of new UPVC double glazed windows to the main house. These have been sympathetically recreated in a sash window style to reflect the character of the property. The property still retains much character and surprisingly offers very well proportioned rooms. In 2008 the kitchen was completely re modelled. High spec units and matching dresser style units were fitted with smart granite worktops and integral appliances which include a modern cooking range and smart floor tiling etc. The wiring was renewed and a new energy efficient oil boiler was fitted externally to maximize the space and under floor heating under the newly-laid tiles. A pleasing feature of the old cast iron cooking range and bread oven has been retained in the dining area of the kitchen and the current vendors do still light the fire for Christmas parties. The garage had many uses over the years including stables, butchers, a sweet shop and even a Sunday school. The original flagstones and bedroom floorboards where cleaned up and re-used to keep the new build in character with the old. However it has now been converted into a complete suite of rooms leading from the main house kitchen- boot room which currently suits the family as a wing for teenage children, equally ideal for an annexe or office suite. It consists of large Sitting Room with fireplace with wood burning stove, Study and first floor Bedroom. Adjoining the Utility Room (poss Kitchen) and the Ground Floor Shower Room this could easily become a self contained annexe. The large Sitting Room in the main house overlooks the pretty gardens to the front. Originally two rooms it has three period style windows (two with the original shutters) and deep sills acting as window seats. There are two fireplaces one now defunct and used as a wine storage area, the other inglenook is fitted with a large wood burning stove. The wide staircase to the first floor landing leads off this room.
3 Upstairs are three Bedrooms and the Family Bathroom. The two main bedrooms have views over the front gardens. The Master Bedroom, a large double, has fitted wardrobes. The Family Bathroom is well fitted with period style sanitary ware which include a ball and claw bath. However there is also a large shower cubicle, the room complemented by Victorian style tiling and panelling. A further enclosed staircase leads to the immense attics which have been used as a children s area due to the low the ceilings. Outside, the property is enclosed by double wooden gates leading to a neat car park. A stone arch leads off to lawned areas - particularly pretty with established cottage style planting and surrounded with shrubs and various established trees. There are several storage sheds and a wooden deck area overlooking the Angiddy where you can fish for brown trout. The old well, which is an attractive feature in the garden, was the main source of drinking water for the Valley up until the 1950 s. IN SUMMARY (Agents Opinion) This is a really attractive period family house in a lovely location alongside a stream in the Angiddy Valley. The house is not isolated and is central to the small conurbation which leads down to the busier roadside village of Tintern. The house is really practical and welcoming; having an immense amount of character with the bonus of a very versatile layout it really would suit so many families. Anyone wanting a country home in a very pretty village really should consider looking at this home. This village made even more spectacular by the historic riverside Abbey Ruins and the old Abbey buildings including the Abbey Mill. This Mill now converted into a gift shops and tea rooms. There are a small number of Hotels offering both accommodation and restaurant facilities. There is a doctors surgery and an antique shop as well as several Local Inns. With little fishing boats moared on the river banks it is a truly delightful place to be. CHEPSTOW is an historic, walled, border town on the site of an ancient port. Chepstow Castle below the town has a spectacular setting on the cliffs above the River Wye. The town has a thriving shopping centre with all amenities. On the outskirts of the town is the Racecourse which has Conference Centre facilities. Both the rivers Wye and the Severn meet near Chepstow and two unique bridges span the wide expanse of water at the Severn estuary - a massive benefit for benefit for motorists using the M48 and M4 who otherwise would need to drive to Gloucester to cross. MONMOUTH itself is a thriving town with excellent shopping facilities including three supermarkets in the centre including Waitrose, Somerfield, M& S Food Hall and now Lidl on the outskirts. There is a delightful period cinema which is undergoing a refurbishment programme.
