4 Thornvale House Location Thornvale House lies equidistant of Nenagh and Roscrea market towns on the borders of counties Tipperary and Offaly and some 3.7 km from the village of Toomevara and 4 km from the village of Moneygall. Historical Note Thornvale House was acquired by Captain George Garvey in the early 1800 s following retirement from the Royal Navy. The Captain and his wife, whose father Major Pepper resided in nearby Loughton, substantially remodelled and extended the house. Subsequently, his son Tolar R. Garvey made further alterations to the house to present it as found today. He was a member of the King s County Boards, Poor Law, Town Commissioners and Lunatic Asylum. He was also involved in the Diocesan and General Synods of his church and served on the North Tipperary and Kings County Grand Juries, later becoming High Sheriff of King s County. Description A fine period home presented in excellent condition with wonderful views to the Devil s Bit (named so for the bite taken by the Devil as he rode over Ireland) and Tipperary Mountains. The family room has a tiled floor, corniced ceiling, centre rose, part wood panelled walls and it has a wood burning stove with a brick surround. A back central hall gives good access to main reception rooms and the kitchen and service rooms, ensuring the accommodation while expansive, has an excellent flow. The kitchen is a spacious bright room and is laid out with a kitchen area and breakfast / dining area. In this courtyard there are a range of rooms and also The School House building together with separate stabling. On the left hand side are found 3 large store rooms at ground floor level and a large room at first floor level, currently used as a gym. The School House is a separate building of approx. 71 sq mt (767 sq ft) and comprises 7 rooms. This building could have many alternative uses, it makes ideal office space but could also be used as further accommodation subject to the necessary permissions. 7 The Workshop The workshop is a standalone double height building of approx. 93 sq mt (1,002 sq ft). The building has concrete floor throughout. Racing at nearby Clonmel, Thurles and Tipperary Racecourses. The renowned equestrian centre of Charlie Swan, the former National Hunt jockey, is nearby. In addition, there are a number of premier breeding establishments in the county, Tipperary being synonymous with horse breeding and equestrian pursuits. Golfing can be enjoyed at Nenagh, Roscrea, Thurles, Birr and Portumna (all 18 holes). Walks can be enjoyed on the property, the Lough Derg Way and a number of other trails, including the Devil s Bit and Silvermines Mountains. Wild fowler s can escape to Ashton s Callows, one of the best known bird watching areas in Europe, or Carney Fen clay pigeon shooting is available nearby.
