Highbridge train station operates a train line into London Paddington with motorway access at Junction 22 of the M5. There are excellent state and independent schools in the area including Wedmore First School, Hugh Sexeys Middle School which has an Outstanding Ofsted rating, and the high performing Kings of Wessex Academy. Independent schools include Wells Cathedral School, Sidcot, MillVield, Taunton School, King s Bruton, All Hallows and Downside. History Tonkin House was built in 1830 by John Tonkin, a prosperous Methodist businessman from St. Ives who started the brickworks in Wedmore. He built the large emporium next door in addition to this dwelling house using "Tonkin" bricks and "Vish-tail" tiles especially designed and made in his brickworks.

7 Description Tonkin House is in the heart of the village with easy access to all the amenities. It dates from the late Georgian period and retains many original details including ornate cornices and ceiling roses, working window shutters, marble and cast iron Vireplaces, and a particularly Vine staircase and balustrade above the galleried dining hall. These features are complemented by works in recent years which have included re-wiring, replumbing and the installation of oak Vlooring in various rooms plus a new kitchen and bathrooms. Whilst the house retains its charm and character it is nonetheless an extremely comfortable and liveable family home with gas central heating with period style radiators. The front door opens into a wide reception hall with doors to the drawing room and sitting room. Both of these Vine rooms have large bay windows (with shutters) and each has a marble Vireplace. The reception hall continues through into a large dining room which has a magnivicent Vlying staircase and gallery with an ornate balustrade. Next to the dining room is the 23'5'' kitchen & breakfast room being light and airy benevitting from a dual aspect and French doors to the garden. The kitchen area is neatly and discreetly furnished and appointed and includes cupboards, granite worktops, a double Belfast sink, an integral dishwasher, a concealed fridge/larder and a large gas range cooker. Leading off the dining room is a utility room and a cloakroom. The gallery on the Virst Vloor looks down onto the dining room and leads to the master bedroom which has an ensuite bathroom. Also on this level are the family bathroom, a cloakroom and 3 other bedrooms - one of which has an en suite shower room. There are also 2 other bedrooms on the second Vloor - each being approached by its own staircase. In all, upstairs, 6 bedrooms, 3 bath/shower rooms, and a wash closet. Outside The house is in the centre of the village and stands back behind a low stonewall with cast iron railings and a pathway to the entrance. At the rear of the house is a large, mainly walled garden which has also been the subject of considerable works and improvement in recent years. It incorporates a lawn, an ornamental pond, well stocked Vlower and shrub beds, walkways and terraces together with mature trees. At the end of the garden is a doorway to a shared rear drive, the double garage, store and parking area.
