2 Tel: Grevel House High Street Chipping Campden GL55 6AG Grevel House, thought to be the home of the famous 14 th Century wool merchant William Grevel, who died in 1401, is Listed Grade I and built around 1380, making it the oldest house in Chipping Campden and famous throughout the land for its Perp bay window of two storeys and six cinquefoil-leaded lights with a traceries panel in between and surmounted by gargoyles (Nickolaus Pevsner). It has a distinctive entrance doorway with a moulded pointed arch and includes the adjoining section known as the cottage which until the early 1990 s, was used as a doctor s surgery and waiting room. The present owner has lived in Grevel House for 53 years and it is the first time the whole property has come to the market, for many years. It is believed that the curtains in the Drawing Room alone are over 100 years old. This sale presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the finest unrestored houses of its age in England, fronting the famous Chipping Campden High Street opposite the junction with Church Street. Built mainly of Cotswold stone and stone slate with vehicular access from the High Street and its own separate driveway off Back Ends, the house is set in gardens and grounds much of which have lost their former glory but with a magnificent Barn and other buildings/studio etc. There is also the former farm yard, dairy and outbuildings making this a unique timewarp. From this area a pair of wrought iron gates behind Grevel House open out onto a lovely enclosed sitting area with walls, an ancient Yew tree and a pair of stone STORES. Steps and a wrought iron gate open into an INNER YARD with a detached stone GARAGE/STABLES having an excellent first floor STUDIO/OFICE with external stone steps. Beyond these buildings tall hedging leads to a delightful paved rose garden. Behind this area there is a further large lawned garden with tall hedging, which in turn leads on to a good sized, fertile and very productive vegetable and fruit garden. To the side of this garden a path leads up from the cottage to a magnificent detached stone and tile BARN reroofed in modern times. There is also an old greenhouse and open fronted store. Beyond this area there are fruit trees leading up to the OLD FARM YARD with its open fronted building, having STABLES, DAIRY, STORE etc and adjacent low building with STORAGE. 4 GREVEL HOUSE BRITISH LISTED BUILDINGS LISTING DESCRIPTION Grade I. Dated Listed 25 th August 1960 English Heritage Building ID: Location B4081 GL55 6AG 2 storey C16 bay of lights, transoms first floor, side lights and common label on ground floor. Right hand bay has a C17 4 light mullion window with label on first floor and bellow a moulded arched door with flanking windows under common label (presumably C19 when the Gainsborough Estate office operated from there). The gable to left of centre has a sundial and 4- and 6 light mullion windows (with king mullions). Apparently C14 doorway to right of left hand bay with moulded arch and rounded label stops and a small 2 light window above. Wide coach way in similar style to left of right hand bay. In the coach way is a Tudor arched doorway into the right hand bay. Inside: the house is really C16 in plan 7- units with cross passage to left of hall (Tudor fireplace) and parlour to the right of hall (with tiercon vaulted bay window and late medieval fireplace with corbelled cornice; a pointed door from this chamber may have given access to the stair) Solar above (now library) also with good fireplace, but bay window is not vaulted). The house was altered in about 1817 when the present staircase was put in. The roof has stout short wind braces to the lower purlin and retains (above the hall) smoke blackening (which indicates that the hall was domestic before the Tudor conversion). To rear of right hand bay is a 2 storey extension linking with a 2 storey building which was once a kitchen (perhaps detached).
