3 Dudley, known as the capital of the Black Country, began life as Saxon village before developing in the 13th Century to become a flourishing market town. Today the traditional industries in Dudley have declined in importance and the area is mostly synonymous with service industries, including tourism and the retail sector. Built on the site of the former Guest Hospital, Butler s Crescent is steeped in cultural heritage. The buildings were originally constructed as almshouses in 1849 by the Earl of Dudley to accommodate miners who had become blind in the limestone pits. After remaining empty for 22 years, the buildings were subsequently purchased by Mr Joseph Guest a wealthy local chain maker who provided a 20,000 endowment for a hospital in Dudley. The former Guest Hospital was opened on 25th October 1871 by the Earl and Countess of Dudley. The hospital was named after its benefactor. Today this historic location has been sympathetically transformed into an exclusive place to live.
