Designate a prtin f the Study Area as the Dwntwn Almnte Heritage Cnservatin District under Part V f the Ontari Heritage Act. 12 THE FIRST SETTLERS came t this area in 1823, t clear land and build shanties, ptash wrks and mills. This set the stage, circa 1840, fr the establishment f the village f Pakenham. This tur takes yu back, prviding a glimpse f its histry. Part I: The Main Street Frm the mid-1800s, Pakenham s main street was a blend f cmmercial establishments, trades, public buildings, hmes and churches. The rute, called Graham Street in earlier days and nw Cunty Rad 29, has always been a main thrughfare. Much f the early architectural flavr f Graham Street remains tday. We begin the tur at the suth end f the main street, at the centaph and Hrticultural Park. The village s Agricultural Hall and Cmmunity Hall were lcated here frm 1896 until The large, frame structure had been the riginal Cathlic Church befre being relcated t this spt. The elementary and cntinuatin (high) schl, built in 1886, was next t this site. The stne wall in the parking lt is all that remains f the schl, which was trn dwn in Crssing Jeanie St., take nte f the attractive huse at #2582. Rbert Graham a blacksmith, and wagn, carriage and sleigh maker built it in It is still knwn as the Graham Huse. The building reflects Classic Revival architecture, a prminent style alng the rest f the street. Acrss the rad is St. Andrew s United Church. Built in 1898 as a Presbyterian church, it blends Gthic and Rmanesque Revival styles. Cntinuing up the main street, three buildings n the west side are ntewrthy, each f which exhibits a different architectural style f the perid. Ye Olde Htel Apartment, built in the 1860s in the Gthic Revival style, was riginally a htel and cntinued t serve as such fr many decades. Fur drs dwn is a building in the Classic Revival style with a duble verandah. Built in the 1870s it hused the village s hardware stre frm the early 1900s until The third building f the tri was anther htel. This Regency style building (riginally stne) frm the mid-1800s was William Dicksn s Cmmercial Htel. Over the years it has hused a variety f businesses frm blacksmith shp t hair saln. Why? Several riginal buildings in the blck were destryed by fire in The year prir, fire als cnsumed several buildings n the west side f the next blck alng which the service statin/car repair shp is lcated. This has been wned and perated by the McCann family since Prir t that, a blacksmith shp was situated here. The east side f the main street between Elizabeth St. and Renfrew St. has a rich cmmercial histry. The building currently husing the Centennial Restaurant was built fr H.H. Dicksn in the late 1800s. Over the years a stre, pst ffice and restaurant have been lcated here. Next t this is the village s bank. Unin Bank pened at this site in the early 1900s; the Ryal Bank fllwed in 1925, expanding int the adjining building in The Pakenham General Stre is an institutin unt itself. Established in the early 1840s by Archibald McArthur and Rbert Brwn, it is cnsidered t be ne f the ldest cntinually perated general stres in Nrth America. The Sctt family wned and perated the stre frm 1876 t 1981 (see plaques). Rbert Brwn had the attached residence built in It features bth Regency and Classic Revival architectural styles. The last building n this blck dates frm the 1860s, and is anther example f the Classic Revival style. Early n, it was a drugstre, then a millinery shp. The Twnship Office was lcated here between 1910 and 1988, fllwed by the library, which has since mved. Part II: Piety Hill Prceeding west n Renfrew St. frm Cunty Rad 29 takes yu up a hill knwn by sme lcal residents as Piety Hill because f the churches and cemetery lcated here. At the nrth end f Dalkeith St. is Unin Cemetery. The village s earliest Presbyterian the first church in village, dating frm 1838 and Methdist churches were lcated n these grunds, tgether with their adjining graveyards. Fllwing unin in 1925, when these tw cngregatins began wrshipping tgether in the previusly-existing St. Andrew s, the tw cemeteries became the Unin Cemetery. cntinued verleaf l

Leaving the cemetery and walking dwn Dalkeith St., ne cmes upn tw ntewrthy hmes at the crner f Pine St. The first, built in the 1860s, served as the Orange Ldge until being cnverted int a residence in The next hme was the Presbyterian manse, dating frm The empty lt at the crner f Dalkeith and Renfrew Streets was the site f the large, stne Methdist church. Built in 1891, a successr t the riginal frame building frm , it was trn dwn in the 1930s subsequent t church unin. The brick huse (circa 1884) next dr served as the manse fr Methdist and United Church ministers until On the ther side f Renfrew St. stands the grand St. Peter Celestine Rman Cathlic Church and rectry, cmpleted in The church was built in the Rmanesque Revival style with Italianate features such as the square bell twer and runded arches. Nte the pinted rather than traditinal flat façade f the main twer. The architecture, unusual fr the area, is similar in style t churches in Quebec and suthern Eurpe. Befre cntinuing dwn Dalkeith, stp and admire the huse just ppsite St. Peter Celestine. Knwn as the Lindsay Huse, it is a lvely example f the Ontari cttage style that ne sees thrughut the area. Thmas Ellis, the funder f the Pakenham Agricultural Sciety, had the huse built in the 1860s. Farther dwn Dalkeith, at the crner with Waba Rad, yu will see the Auld Schule ( ld schl ) Apartments. The name f the apartment blck reflects the building s riginal purpse as a grammar schl, frm abut 1854 until Runding the crner frm Dalkeith nt Jessie St. takes yu t St. Mark s Anglican Church. Built in 1876, the structure displays the Gthic Revival style typical f Anglican churches. The brick rectry beside the church was built in Frm this pint n Jessie St., make yur way t Cunty Rad 29 and g nrth thrugh the village fr abut ½ km. until yu reach the bridge crssing 11 the Mississippi River. Part III: The Mississippi River & the Andrew Dicksn Legacy The five-span stne bridge at the little falls is the nly ne f its kind in Nrth America. Built in 1901 as a sturdy replacement fr the wden bridges that were smetimes washed away in spring flds, this preeminent landmark f the village is ne f the Seven Wnders f Lanark Cunty. An explanatry plaque at each end f the bridge prvides mre infrmatin. (Be cautius f the traffic when walking acrss the bridge.) Andrew Dicksn ( ) was the primary driving frce behind the creatin f the village f Pakenham during the 1830s and 40s. His numerus prperty acquisitins in the 1830s included mst f the area n bth sides f the Mississippi River that wuld becme the village. Water pwer and water rights were the keys t Dicksn s business success. They drve his mills (lumber, flur and carding) and brught in incme thrugh the use f his timber slide. Dicksn als was prminent in the area s cmmerce, wning a stre which had a licence t sell liqur, and a pst ffice. Althugh nne f the Dicksn mills, lcated n the east side f the river, stand tday, mst f his hmes d. At the far end f the bridge stands a sturdy and rather majestic tw-strey stne building, a cmbinatin f Ne-classic and Regency styles. It was built in 1840 as Andrew Dicksn s secnd hme. Dicksn cmmercial dynasty. A shrt walk alng Dark Side Rad leads yu t Andrew s third hme, a Gthic revival style building frm the 1860s. In the same decade he had the huse knwn as Breezy Heights built. Lcated n the rise behind the stne building, it was mre like a summer hme. In 1868, the year f Dicksn s death, the huse went t William. Frm 1985 t 2011 it was perated as the Stnebridge Bed and Breakfast. It is nw a private resident and is nt visible frm the rad. This ends the three-part walking tur f Pakenham, a glimpse int the histry and built heritage f a small but vibrant village alng the Mississippi River. t

14 served as a barding huse fr the textile mill wrkers. Next n the tur is the frmer Methdist/ United Church (#490 River Rd.), which is nw a private residence. The Methdist Church was built n prperty dnated by Jseph Teskey. The riginal church was a frame building built in 1868 which burned dwn in The stne church was cnstructed in 1889 with Rbert Teskey given the hnr f laying the crner stne. In 1925 the church became St. Andrew s United Church and remained in peratin until Wal k i n g Tur V I L L AG E O F A P P L E TO N Intrductin Mississippi Mills THE FIRST SETTLERS came t Appletn in the 1820s and harnessed the natural falls f the Mississippi River t build a cmmunity. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1824 and a blacksmith, a cbbler, a general stre, a Wllen mill and ther businesses sn fllwed. This tur prvides a glimpse f Appletn s histry. Appletn was riginally knwn as Apple Tree Falls but later became knwn as Teskeyville in hnr f the three Teskey brthers wh settled here. The Teskey family built Appletn s sawmill, grist mill and wllen mill. They als perated the general stre and pst ffice. It was nt until 1857 that the cmmunity was fficially re-named Appletn. We begin the tur at the Nrth Lanark Reginal Museum (River Rd. at Appletn Side Rad) which sits n the site f the frmer S.S. #11 Ramsay Schl. The riginal red brick schl huse was built in 1879 t replace a lg building and t accmmdate grwing attendance. The schl clsed dwn in 1969, was reinvented as a museum in 1971, but burned dwn in Cntinuing int Appletn n River Rad yu reach the cmmunity bat launch which was the site f the Appletn Cheese Factry. Every mrning the farmers drpped ff their milk and every afternn the lcal children wuld stp by fr sme fresh curds. As yu cntinue dwn River Rad at the curve is a stne huse with a turret. In 1824 Jseph Teskey built a gristmill in Appletn n the East side f the Mississippi River. The mill prvided flur and grain t the cmmunity int the early twentieth century. In the current hme was built n the site using stnes frm the fundatin f the clsed grist mill. The hme was built by Jhn Cllie whse father William Cllie Sr. purchased the Wllen Mills in Cntinuing n Appletn Side Rad yu arrive n the left at the Scttish Gergian style stne huse f Jseph Teskey. The huse was built in c.1844 and remains in excellent cnditin. Yu ll ntice three arches which prvided access t the carriage garage. The spacius hme later At the tp f Hill Street there used t be the Presbyterian Church which was built in c.1875 n land dnated by Andrew Wilsn. The Presbyterian Church clsed in 1925 when mst f the Cngregatin jined the United Church f Canada. The Presbyterian Church was demlished in There was n Rman Cathlic Church in Appletn, instead the priest wuld hld mass n Sunday afternns in a private hme. At the intersectin f River Rad, Hill Street and the Bridge sits a tw strey red brick building built in the 1880s by Thmas Arthur. This is the frmer General Stre and Pst Office. Remnants f the Stre signs are still visible n the suth side f the building. The wner f the General Stre typically ran the Pst Office. When William Russell Lyns wned the General Stre his wife Mrs. Jessie J. Lyns wrked as stre keeper, pstmistress and village midwife. On the Suth West side f the bridge is a large white building with wd shingles (#449 River Rd.). This building was frmerly the village blacksmith shp run by Andy Gladish. The building was built in the late 1940s by Mr. Gladish t replace a smaller shp lcated next t the red brick general stre. It tk Mr. Gladish a while t cmpletely transitin frm the ld building t the new building, fr several years he wrked ut f bth buildings. The new building als featured tw apartments n the secnd flr where the Andy s children Max and Jack lived. During the 1800s there were always at least tw blacksmiths in the village. The blacksmiths made tls, repaired equipment and shed hrses. Appletn s riginal bridge was built by Albert Teskey in 1858 ut f pine abut 100 meters suth f the mdern bridge. A secnd wd bridge replaced the first ne in 1864 this time built by Dennis Sullivan. In 1890 the bridge was reinfrced with braces but was damaged and destryed during the winter f An irn bridge replaced the ld ne and then in the 1950s a new bridge was cnstructed n the site f the current ne. As yu crss the bridge and lk Nrth twards the pwer dam the ruins f the riginal Wllen Mill are still visible. The riginal stne mill was built in 1862 by Rbert Teskey using lcally quarried limestne and featured prminent quins. In 1880 Jhn Adam Teskey built a secnd mill building n the success f the bming Wllen industry. The mill prduced wven clths and did custm carding and spinning. In 1900 the Teskey family retired and the Wllen Mill was sld t the Caldwell family f Lanark wh perated the mill int the 1930s. During the Depressin the Wllen mill went largely unused but started up again when the Cllie family became wners in At its peak the wllen mills emplyed ver 300 peple and perated 24 hurs a day. Turning nt Old Mill Lane (#104) the majestic Rbert Teskey huse stands ut. This large stne hme was built in the early 1850s. The huse is a tw and a half strey stne hme built int the side f a natural slpe. This massive hme nce hused the Teskey family n the first tw levels and their servants in the third level. The hme riginally had an upper and lwer verandah running acrss its frnt. This frnt prch has since been remved but the blt hles are still visible in parts f the stne. Lcated almst directly behind the Rbert Teskey huse is the site f the frmer Cllie Wllen Factry which was built in The large cement blck building used electricity t pwer the prductin f textiles. With the additin f the factry the stne mills became the finishing department and the administratin ffice. After the stne mills were destryed in cnsecutive fires an additin t the cement blck factry was built in The mdern factry was used until 1992 when the cmpany clsed and the building was destryed by fire in Fllwing nt Wilsn Street (#124) ne f the first buildings n the West side f the River is a large stne huse. This ne and a half strey stne 13 huse was built in c by the third Teskey brther, Albert. Albert was Reeve f Ramsay Twnship, perated a general stre in Appletn and was Appletn s first pstmaster frm 1857 t Cntinuing dwn Wilsn Street and peaking dwn Apple Street and Duke Street yu ll ntice many lg hmes. When the first settlers arrived in Appletn during the 1820s their first pririty was t build a hme fr the winter. Using their axes, adzes and ther tls the settlers cnstructed small lg hmes. Small and cramped these lg hmes prvided the necessary warmth, prtectin and security that the settlers needed. Eventually many f these hmes were replaced with framed wd r stne. During the twentieth century mre lg hmes were built, this time mainly serving as cttages. Many families frm Ottawa spent their summers fishing and relaxing in Appletn. At ne time, Mr. Everett Dunn perated a bat rental business and named the bats after the lcal children. Many a lcal remembers cming t the stre fr ice cream during the summer and treats at Hallween. The Snedden stre is n lnger arund but the large white Snedden Huse remains at (#256 Wilsn St.) Leaving Appletn n Wilsn St and heading twards Cunty Rd. 29 yu pass thrugh the Mississippi Glf Club which cvers 190 acres and features nine hles n ne side f the rad and a secnd nine n the ppsite side. The club was established in 1915 n the frmer Pattersn Farm. The club began as a nine-hle curse and added the secnd nine in A Pr Shp was built in The club s riginal stne club huse was destryed by fire in 1997 and was replaced with the current building in 1998.t

18 Histric Plaster Cnservatin Services December 2, 2014 Michael Rikley-Lancaster Mississippi Valley Textile Museum 3 Rsamnd St. E. Almnte, Ontari Dear Michael, Mississippi Valley Textile Museum Plaster Assessment In July 2013 Rd Stewart and Masumi Suzuki f HPCS were invited t the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in rder t examine a plaster wall. During the brief visit a plaster sample was taken fr testing. Testing was pstpned until the end f Nvember 2014 a rather lengthy delay fr which we aplgize. The result f the tests indicates the plaster des nt have a unifrm characteristic thrughut. Fr the mst part, we practice varius plaster cnslidatin methds that depend n ur ability t inject r therwise get ur specialized acrylic resins int the plaster which in turn strengths it and bnds it t its substrate in this case the stne wall behind. Initially we had hped that we culd devise a simple methd fr this cnslidatin prcess that invlved a mechanism that culd ultimately be perated (nce it is prperly tested and calibrated) by museum staff, with HPCS prviding materials and advisry assistance as necessary. The variable nature f the plaster and its current cnditin preclude such a simplified methd as it wuld yield incnsistent results. On a mre psitive nte, the plaster des respnd well t ur materials and we are cnfident that careful applicatin will yield excellent results. Currently yu have tw situatins acrss the wall. There are friable brken edges where sme plaster has fallen away frm the stne wall ver the years, and there is the rest f the plaster that remains in place. The stability f the remaining plaster is unknwn but bviusly suspect in sme areas. Any ptential treatment plan wuld invlve addressing these tw different situatins. HPCS has a lng track recrd f slving plaster prblems such as thse in yur museum. We have methds fr successfully addressing bth situatins. Since we are unaware f the museum s prgramming intentins, r the expectatins f its bard members regarding a ptential treatment plan, we suggest prceeding with a small trial. The trial wuld invlve treating a ten ft sectin f wall. We wuld cnduct a full treatment in the trial area. The nly stipulatin fr the lcatin f such a sample run wuld be that it incrprate bth types f prblems mentined in the paragraph abve. This wuld give the museum a clear picture f what t expect frm a treatment f the entire space and hpefully make cnservatin a mre tangible ptin. 16

19 During the trial HPCS wuld carry ut the fllwing prcedures in the sample area: 1. Stabilize the friable expsed plaster edges where there has been lss. This wuld invlve a technician injecting plaster cnslidatin materials int all the expsed edges f the plaster in rder t strengthen the leading edges and secure lse fragments. This wuld preserve all the lse plaster that can be detected visually. 2. Stabilize the remainder f the plaster. Using what is knwn in ur field as sunding, a technician wuld lcate vids under the surface f the wall. This prcess invlves gently tapping the wall with a tl r by hand, and listening fr a respnse that indicates a vid beneath the surface. The technician wuld drill small hles in rder t hypdermically inject cnslidatin materials int the destabilized regins. This wuld secure all the remaining plaster that currently appears intact, but has becme detached frm the stne wall smewhere beneath the surface. A senir member f ur staff wuld cnduct the trial using HPCS plaster cnslidatin prducts. A brief reprt dcumenting the wrk wuld be prvided at the end f the trial. HPCS culd cnduct such a trial at a cst that wuld nt exceed $3600. The timing fr such a trial culd be based n the museum s schedule.
