Description Mount Harry House is an elegant and beautifully situated country house, sitting at the top of a sloping gradient in a picturesque landscape and cleverly designed so that the principal reception rooms and all but one of the bedrooms are positioned to take full advantage of the remarkable views over its own gardens and grounds to the south east. The house is largely unchanged since it was built in the 1930s and although naturally in need of some modernisation, is clearly a much loved and comfortable family home yet with all the grandeur and scale of a prominent country house. Historical Note Built on land formerly part of the Coombe Place Estate, Mount Harry House was commissioned by Edwin Fisher, one of the distinguished Fisher family and chairman of Barclay s Bank from 1936 until his death in Completed in 1936, the property was designed by architects T. A. Darcy Braddell and Humphry Deane in their favoured Queen Anne Revival style and is attractively characterised by an abundance of classically-inspired columns and pilasters, stone quoins and sash windows; the gardens were laid out by Colonel Gavin Jones, who undertook many prestigious projects and is perhaps best-known for creating the rock garden at Chartwell, the home of Sir Winston Churchill. In December 1942 the house featured in a major four-page article by Christopher Hussey in Country Life, described as A modern house in the Georgian manner.... The property is named after the nearby Mount Harry, itself said to have taken its name from Henry III who fought Simon de Montfort nearby at the Battle of Lewes in The current owners, Lord and Lady Renton, bought the property from the Fishers in 1967 and remain only the second family to live in the house.

5 Largely hidden from the road, the house is approached via a winding driveway which climbs gently up to the house and to a large parking area to the front. Internally, the substantial accommodation is arranged over three floors; two self-contained flats comprise the majority of the north eastern wing and offer useful secondary accommodation though could be easily incorporated into the main house. The main reception rooms are spacious with high ceilings and feature a wealth of fine classical features including a number of individually-designed stone and English marble fireplaces, mellow stone and teak flooring, and ornate plasterwork, architraves and cornicing. The floor plans give an excellent overview of the full extent of the accommodation, though there are a number of features worthy of more detailed description. Broad stone steps lead up to an entrance porch with Doric columns; a pair of solid wood doors open to the grand reception hall which has a stone fireplace with inset woodburner. An arch leads to the staircase hall from which a stunning cantilevered stone staircase rises to the first floor. Of particular note is the drawing room, a delightful room with a number of sash windows overlooking the terrace, elegant Ionic columns and a large stone fireplace with inset woodburner and Sussex marble insert. The teak floor is believed to have come from the ship of Admiral Sir William Fisher, brother of Edwin. Adjoining the drawing room is a charming double aspect morning room; a door opens from here to the study. The large kitchen and dining room has a four-oven Aga and is served by three utility rooms. The curved stone staircase from the reception hall leads to a large galleried landing area from which all the main bedrooms are accessed. The double aspect master bedroom suite has an elevated view of the gardens and parkland beyond, a walk in wardrobe and shares a Jack and Jill bathroom with an adjacent bedroom. All the bedrooms have wash basins and are served by three further bathrooms and a separate WC. There is one further bedroom on the second floor, together with access to two large attic storage rooms.

7 Gardens and Grounds The gardens are a particular feature of Mount Harry House, designed by Colonel Gavin Jones and further enhanced by the current owners, specialists in deciduous trees who have planted over 100 varieties of specimen trees in the grounds. Spanning the rear of the house is a large stone terrace and seating area which provides an excellent area for summer entertaining and alfresco dining; steps descend to the formal lawn with central water fountain. There are areas of lawn and well stocked formal gardens located to the south and east of the house, including a rose garden, lavender and laburnum walks, a bowling green and a former arboretum. Located on the north eastern side of the driveway is a further area of garden in which is sited a tennis court (in need of some repair) and a well stocked and productive kitchen garden, with original greenhouse. A band of mixed woodland extends along the northern boundary; the two paddocks lie beyond the formal garden to the south east. In all about 19.6 acres.
