2 SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OCCUPANCY: Built in 1913 as separate Freshmen dormitory buildings Not purpose-built as part of the House System Originally built for 291 students - now accommodates overflow Winthrop students reside in DeWolfe PHYSICAL CONSTRAINTS: No easily identifiable Front Door Non-accessible due to interior level changes Low ceiling heights in basements present challenges Ceiling heights in Gore attics preclude legal occupation PROGRAM SHORTCOMINGS: Overcrowded Dining Hall serves 400 students in a space designed for 290 HPPC Program for Student Life spaces cannot be accommodated in Gore and Standish due to physical constraints Gore and Standish Halls, even when renovated, cannot accommodate the 400+ student population of Winthrop House
