photo: Michiel van Loon Schullin Jewelry Shop Kohlmarkt Vienna Austria In this jewelry shop in Vienna, ornament is both message and medium Hans Hollein has taken the basic shell of a 19th-century building, corrected it slightly, and painted it white He then superimposed a clearly differentiated layer of elements not only functional but fantastic and luxurious Paradoxically for a jewelry shop (and quite intentionally), he has used materials in flagrant disregard of their real value: some are precious and some are common, but all, glowing or glittering, tease the visitor with an impression of wealth and mystery Real marble is used in the patterned floor, but in the black-curtained backworld of the safe, under a mock skylight, plastic laminate pretends to be marble Real bronze is used as an arch/guillotine over the entrance, but a headless 'bronzed' African bust is in fact plastic (text from 'Ornament is no crime', Progressive ure/ny) Public access unknown! 1974 Hans Hollein Herbert Schullin Michiel_van_Loon photo: Michiel van Loon 7

photo: Alexander Koller photo: Alexander Koller Red Room Stubenring Vienna Austria Continuing its previous work for the Comida Restaurant in Vienna, Söhne & Partners transformed the basement of the eatery into a modestly decorated space-age club: the Red Room Cloaked entirely in one shade of red velvet, Red Room's walls, ceiling and furniture merge into one another, connecting the different areas and providing a stark contrast to the club's polished white flooring and several other white features, including the bar and DJ deck Influenced by the 1968 science-fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a classic co-written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, the interior radiates an air of calmness enhanced by a sense of sheer lightness Söhne & Partner clad nearly all surfaces of the club in velvet to add character to the interior design Adding a dimension of flexibility to the seating arrangement, red poufs scattered liberally throughout the club float like globules of blood on the translucent grid of white glass photo: Alexander Koller Floor area/size m² Interior architect Soehne & Partner Architekten Sunshine Enterprises soehne_partner Tram: 1 or U3 8

photo: Michiel van Loon photo: Michiel van Loon Branch Bank Building Favoritenstraße Vienna Austria The functional interior space of the Branch Bank Building of the Z-Bank in Vienna can be read from outside The interacting, half-storey displaced floors are summarized in one single room, which connects the out-and-inside with its overhanging 'mouth' Veins of movement and rest areas are determing the general use The municipal use in the upper floors is elevated - 'the house with the kink' The shape of the roof is adding up to the whole of the building and links the sky to the ground Concrete, steel and metal are the dominating materials Each material appears in the way it was manufactured Construction and technical installations are displayed open All of these architectural elements are part of the design, linked to the whole appearance of the building and also to the neighbourhood The interaction of these parts is resulting in the complex unity of this kind of architecture (text from website architect) Floor area/size m² Günther Domenig Zentralsparkasse und Kommerzialbank Wien photo: Kornspeicher Michiel_van_Loon 9

photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak T-Center St Marx Rennweg Vienna Austria r/indexhtml The striking T-Center St Marx was designed and built by architect Günther Domenig Completed in 2004, the project has m2 of usable floor space and contains offices for 3000 employees Unusually proportioned, the building can be described as a reclining structure 60m high and 255m long with a 40m wing cantilevering out From a town-planning perspective this building represents the first step in the development of a new district on the site of the former St Marx abattoir and cattle sheds The T-Center St Marx is not only an office building for its owner, T-Mobile, it's also a large sculpture Domenig wanted to create a 280 meter long horizontal skyscraper and ended up with what is quite possibly the most unique office building in Vienna (text from Princeton ural Press and Michael Hierner) photo: Wojtek Gurak Public access unknown! 12 photo: Gregor Pils photo: Gregor Pils Pallet House Karlsplatz Vienna Austria Pallets are available worldwide and used in different ways, eg for transport with railway cars, ship containers and trucks At the end of their life cycle -after transportation- they are usually burned Hence, it is of global concern to find a follow-up use for them For building a 60m2 pallet house, 900 reconditioned pallets are needed The pallet is used as detachable façade element, ceiling element, wall element, as blind and as sunscreen The space between the pallets contains beams, insulation, cables and lighting Due to the use of 900 recycled pallets for the basic structure and of cellulose or sand as insulation, the building is highly ecological and sustainable The need for other materials is reduced to a minimum Pallet houses could replace low-cost shelters in slums and in refugee camps, which could be built easily by locals with local materials Today popular for transport only, in the future pallets could additionally become a construction element for poor and for rich photo: Gregor Pils Floor area/size m² Main designer, Associate architect Associate architect Gregor Pils Andreas Claus Schnetzer Karin Stieldorf Pekka Janhunen ana_struna_bregar 12

photo: Michiel van Loon photo: Michiel van Loon Spittelau District Heating Plant Spittelauer Lände 1090 Vienna Austria Vienna has the persistence of its former mayor Helmut Zilk to thank for Hundertwasser having taken on the task of redesigning the exterior of the Spittelau District Heating Plant Originally Hundertwasser had opposed the idea upon consulting his friend, environmentalist Bernd Lötsch, as he had fundamental objections to a garbage-incinerating plant as long as all possibilities for avoiding garbage were not exhausted When it was promised that the plant would be equipped with the most modern emission-purification technology, and that apartments would be heated whose emissions would otherwise be a further source of pollution, Hundertwasser agreed to do the design The plain factory building was turned into a spectacular and unique work of art, and is an example of harmonic symbiosis between technology, ecology and art (text from Kunst Haus Wien) Project is not public! 1992, Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser Michiel_van_Loon photo: Michiel van Loon 13

photo: Agron Deralla photo: Agron Deralla Pasettistraße 74 Traisengasse Vienna Austria The building in the Pasettistraße/Traisengasse is a refurbishment and a modernization of an existing office building, built in the 80ties The urban articulation of the new entrance to the building is plausible The design of the façade, using ceramic tiles, is a reinterpretation of the old façade by conventional means The design concept for interior spaces and the courtyard is marked by generosity and elegance The total energy consumption concept as a whole is conclusive It minimizes the total energy demand (external shading, mechanical air supply and air exhaust with highly efficient heat recovery from exhaust air, decentralized water heating, high insulation standard) The concept enables the highest possible efficiency of the summer night air ventilation - in combination with the existing large thermal masses which will be operated without active cooling photo: Agron Deralla Project is not public! 18 photo: Hertha Hurnaus photo: Hertha Hurnaus Neu 31 Neuwaldegger Strasse Vienna Austria The concept of the overlapping spatial structure, open to the outside as well as inside, with symbiotically conjoined residential and office accommodation units is not merely a lip service here, it runs throughout all parts of the building - the spatial solution appeared that beneficial to the architects to occupy it by themselves The concept was to create a four-level diaphanous structure, which integrates all functions of living and working and yet offers enough privacy All rooms and apartments are interlaced into each other and open not only to the outside but to the inside as well This radically breaks with the classical scheme of a cube, which is bordered by four walls photo: Hertha Hurnaus Project is not public! 25 photo: Werner Huthmacher photo: Werner Huthmacher Uniqa Tower Untere Donaustrasse Vienna Austria Whereas in the past a head office might have been 'lit up' by means of illuminated logos, ads or spotlights, the advent of 'media façades' has greatly expanded the possibilities - not to everyone's delight, however, because when not careful the city can easily turn into a fairground where buildings vie for attention So when Licht Kunst Licht were commissioned to make a lighting plan for the Uniqa Tower, they were determined to use light 'in an artistic and sophisticated manner that would be techically 'state-of-the-art' They put individually controllable RGB LED video pixels in the cavity of the building's double façade, enough pixels to turn the 75-metre high sculptural tower into one big, continuous screen The artists group Mader Stublic Wiermann developed the artistic video "twists and turns" running on the video system that processes the video system processes 25 images per second, so the light play flows smoothly and makes the screen a 'second skin' Public access unknown! 2006 Main designer, Artist Supplier Lighting designer Neumann + Partner Mader, Stublic, Wiermann Barco Licht Kunst Licht Uniqa Tower Kirsten_Hannema photo: Nazar Leskiw 25

photo: Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten Vertically Landscaped Housing Hardtmuthgasse 68 A-1100 Vienna Austria On a corner plot in Vienna, Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten built a compact block of 17 apartments Balancing the high density of the project are the spacious communal amenities on the ground floor (workshop, hobby room, children?s room), the public roof garden and the private?gardens? in front of every living room In order to bring coherence to the large façade areas, including the curved soffits of the loggias, the architects opted for a corrugated aluminium sheeting that could be applied without seams The result is powerful and homogeneous But it?s an unconventional choice of material for a residential project where brick, wood or concrete tend to be the preferred option That surprise effect is precisely what the architects were aiming for In choosing corrugated aluminium they were also setting themselves the challenge of showing that a material they claim usually evokes negative associations can deliver an elegant building with a congenial atmosphere Project is not public!
