2 Casa da Musica Avenida da Boavista Porto After Porto was selected one of the 2 cultural capitals of Europe in 2001, an international competition started, for a new concert hall to be positioned in the historical centre The shape directly derived from programmatic-piling-up Two shoe-box concert halls were piled first, the other public programs were added onto the shoe-boxes and the remaining spaces between the public functions were filled up with secondary serving spaces, such as foyers, restaurant, terraces, technical spaces and vertical transport A continuous route connects all functions and remaining spaces by stairs, platforms and escalators: the building becomes an architectural adventure The loop creates the possibility to use it for festivals with simultaneous performances Wave-like corrugated glass is used in both the 1300 seat grand auditorium and its smaller 350 seat counterpart Through material transparency each space reveals its contents to the city; showing an array of performances and cultural events photo: Casa da Música Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Structural engineer Supplier OMA - Rem Koolhaas Inside Outside Arup Lensvelt Porto 2001 / Casa da Música boeboe The building is open every day, Mo-Sat: from 10:00-19:00 h; Sunday : from 10:00-18:00 h, The Casa organizes daily guided tours through the buidling: 11:00 and 16:00h For groups of 15 to 35 people To reserve and more info: visitasguiadas@casadamusicacom Metro: Linha Azul, stop at Matosinhos - Estádio do Dragão Or Linha Vermelha, stop at Estádio do Dragão - Srª da Hora 2

4 Casa de Serralves Rua de Serralves 4050 Porto Old property of Count of Vizela, the gardens of Serralves are an amazing example of the French style gardens together with the romantic influenced gardens and more recently with the Museum of Contemporary Art beautifully designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira The House of Serralves was the main house of this whole property and began its construction in 1925 to be finished only in 1944 Designed by the Porto based architect José Marques da Silva, author of numerous beautiful beaux-arts buildings in Porto (Central Station, Aliados Avenue, ) This House is a great example of the Art-Déco style of the early 20th century in Europe Designed with a great simplicity and minimalism, the interiors have an enormous attention to the details and the natural light 1944, Artist José Marques da Silva Conde de Vizela Joao_Sousa It depends of the schedule of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves Mondays is closed The way to get access to the house is by entering the Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves (by Siza Vieira) and to buy the ticket to the museum exhibition and the gardens The house is located at the gardens 4

5 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Café do Cais Cais Estiva Porto This café is situated along the river Douro in the old city centre It is a simple glazed pavilion, integrated into the lively quayside surroundings When all the glass doors on the south side are opened, the café is transformed into a large, covered open-air terrace The only solid boxes are the two service-zones inside, one for the bar, and the other for sanitary services The pavilion seems to hover above the ground on a small raised platform The terrace has an amazing canopy, resembling the sails of the ships passing by 2000 Cristina Guedes + Francisco Vieira de Campos Animafoz Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst If you re in Praca da Ribeira, walk to the river, then turn right it is the glass building on your left, right on the river edge 5

6 photo: Traço Alternativo photo: Traço Alternativo Urban Renewal Aliados Avenue Avenida dos Aliados Porto The Project for the Avenida dos Aliados surges from the need to build, in that place, three metro stations that are practically contiguous: São Bento, Aliados and Trindade The intervention opted for the reformulation of the existing vegetation, it privileged the thick arboreal but freed the ground from flower beds and other obstacles which restricted the use of the Avenue located in the heart of the city as a large public space, as it happens in countless cities, responding to a use that was, in fact, already in practice, although in precarious conditions The project redesigned the urban furniture but re-used the old existing street lamps On the upper side of the Avenue, near the City Hall, a water mirror was built, surrounded by benches, chairs and trees 2005 Main designer, Alvaro Siza Vieira Eduardo Souto de Moura uralguides photo: Traço Alternativo 6

8 photo: Luís Ferreira Alves Guindais Funicular Av de Gustavo Eiffel 4000 Porto The Funicular connects the Douro river bank to the high town at the Batalha quarter, through the Guindais slope It is the new way that grasps itself to firm stone and ends in a tower facing the river, such as the old wall which leans on a big rock At both edges of this trajectory there are two stations, each one looking for the adequate relation to each part of the town and its immediate environment areas Both stations are entirely built of white concrete, the most brilliant colourgrade in the North: in the subterraneous station at the mountain in order to better reflect the light entering through the vertical accesses and skylights; in the station at the valley, to make reference to the clear plans of the slope The water which runs along the slope and the line of the valley formed by the rails, controlled by little dams that decrease and sustain its speed, falls freely as a cascade in the interior of the station, being then conducted to the river 2003, Urban planner Adalberto Dias Porto Metro do Porto Joao_Sousa June - September: Sunday to Wednesday - 08h00-22h00 Thursday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 October - May: Sunday to Thursday - 08h00-20h00 Friday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 Right next to the famous bridge Luíz I in the heart of the medieval city 8

9 photo: Carlos Dias Trindade Subway Station Rua de Camões 4000 Porto Built to be the central subway station, "Trindade" has an interface that connects 2 subway lines resulting in a big subway station with commercial spaces The materialization of the architecture is almost the space as all the other subway stations in the center of Porto and it reflects a lot of the northern portuguese way of building White walls, granite floors, ceramic tiles, rough granite stone walls, all of these elements appear in the tradicional constructions and were recreated to fit the contemporary design resulting in some very interesting spaces 2002 Eduardo Souto de Moura Metro do Porto Joao_Sousa from 600h - 100h but it depends of the months By the subway just get to "Trindade" subway station In the heart of the old city right beside the Trindade Church and the city hall 9

10 Placa de Lisboa R das Carmelitas Porto Portuguese studio Balonas and Menano s have created the "Praca de Lisboa" in Porto, The project was completed as an effort to improve an area in decline in the middle of Porto and creates a space for community and livelihood The structure includes three levels, with its top-most level consisting of a green roof planted with olive trees referencing the "Porta do Oliva" The middle level is dedicated to commercial use, and the ground level provides room for a refined parking lot and pedestrian spaces 2014 Balonas and Menano s Nazar 10

11 Water Pavilion Estrada da Circunvalação Porto This pavilion was built to be part of the Expo 1998 in Lisbon It was rebuilt in Porto at the city park The shape of the building stands like if it were levitating from the ground, coming out of a surface of water It's structure is entirely made out of wood 1998, Urban planner Supplier Alexandre Burmester José Carlos Gonçalves Águas do Porto Joao_Sousa By the city park is easy to reach by foot By car/bus there's an entrance at the "Estrada da Circunvalação" 11

12 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Carlos Dias She Changes Praça de Cidade do Salvador 4100 Porto is home to artist Janet Echelman's 'She Changes', a 160-foot-tall waterfront netted wind sculpture suspended above a 3-lane highway roundabout, which received the IFAI International Achievement Award and the Public Art Network's Year in Review Award It is a monumental, red and white, membrane-like sculpture at the Praca Cidade San Salvador in the town of Matosinhos along the shoreline outside of Porto Through her art, Janet Echelman reshapes urban airspace with monumental public sculptures that respond to environmental forces including wind, water, and sunlight "I am a sculptor who shapes urban space I prefer the immediacy and challenge of transforming sites that are either unnoticed infrastructure that have faded from public memory, or iconic landmarks that are so overexposed they become habitual background" photo: Carlos Dias 2005 Artist Janet Echelman MI_MOA 24/7 12

13 photo: Telmo Miller Vodafone Office Avenida da Boavista Porto This headquarters building in Porto was designed with Vodafone s slogan Vodafone Life, Life in Motion, resulting a dynamic building with irregular body, out of balance, with many faces in motion The formalization of this concept is based on the concrete, which through its plasticity, allows to create irregular and free-form shapes, working both as a structural solution and exterior appearance The technical complexity of the building leads to a periphery structural solution, a shell of concrete, like an egg, reducing internal support to the two stairwells and three central pillars, allowing great versatility in its interior space use Project is not public! 2009 barbosa & guimaraes arquitectos Vodafone bjornjansen 13
