2 photo: Filipe Brandão Hotel at Grand Canal Square Hanover Quay Dublin The Grand Canal Square project is a heady mix of international architecture that will become a new urban village for Dublin City The project combines several major elements, of which the Grand Canal Theatre by Daniel Libeskind, west of the Square is the most eye catching To the north of the Square, Manuel Aires Mateus has designed a dramatic luxury 5 star hotel with 94 Hotel Residences Described by the Sunday Times as a building which will "bring the champagne fizz back into architecture in Dublin", the hotel features a dramatic lobby designed as though "excavated from a seven storey rock" photo: Filipe Brandão 2008 Client Aires Mateus s Dublin Docklands Development Authority filipeb Dublin Docklands is only minutes from the city centre 2

3 Timberyard Social Housing Cork Street Dublin 8 Dublin The Timberyard development consists of a new social housing scheme comprising of 47 dwellings and a street level community facility It is situated in the historic Liberties area of Dublin, fronting on to the Coombe By-Pass The site layout completes existing and fragmented city blocks It focuses on a public space, turning the former timberyard into a communicative space The seven-storey scale along Cork Street staggers and slopes down to three storeys to match the smaller scale of the existing houses to the north of the site Materials make references to the surrounding, red brick-dominated neighbourhood and the history of the site as a timberyard Concrete is introduced as an additional material The unites provide private open space in the form of private gardens, roof terraces and balconies cut into the building volume A small Marian grotto that previously stood outside the site can be now find in a short pedestrian passage Project is not public! 2009 Services engineer Structural engineer Contractor Client O'Donnell + Tuomey s Buro Happold Downes Associates Townlink Construction Dublin City Council Matthias_Hanzlik 3

4 photo: Naomi Schiphorst Department of Finance Merrio Row 7-9 Dublin This new contemporary office building sits in a highly significant position in the city The fundamental concept of building is rooted in its immediate urban context, relating to St Stephen s Green, the Hugeunot Cemetery and the 18th century Georgian streetscape The building respects the existing street line and makes formal reference to the tradition of set-back and entrance detailing of Dublin's great historic buildings and squares Project is not public! 2007 Client Grafton architects Office of Public Works Naomi 4

5 Lewis Glucksman Gallery College Road University College Cork Cork The Lewis Glucksman Gallery on the grounds of University College Cork is a stunning, award-winning building from Irish architects O'Donnell + Tuomey The gallery is beautifully located between the trees, along a river at the campus' main entrance on Western Road The Lewis Glucksman Gallery sees itself as a cultural and educational institution that promotes the research, creation and exploration of the visual arts The building comprises interlaced exhibition spaces, lecture facilities and a gallery shop on the American oak-cladded upper floors and a riverside restaurant, service and ancillary functions in the limestone-clad base The entrance level is glazed and opens to a public space at podium level This podium mediates between the different landscape levels Projecting windows on the upper floors provide natural light and selected views into the surrounding landscape and towards other buildings on the campus Floor area/size m² Client O'Donnell + Tuomey s University College Cork Matthias_Hanzlik Tuesday - Saturday: Sunday: Closed Mondays The Lewis Glucksman Gallery is situated in the Lower Grounds of University College Cork It is a short walk from Cork City Centre along Washington Street and Western Road Pedestrians can enter UCC Campus through the Main Ceremonial Gates at the corner of Western Road and O'Donovan's Road and the gallery is on the right walking up the main avenue 5

6 IMMA at Earslfort Terrace Earlsfort Terrace 00 D02 Dublin This state-owned building is now enjoying something of a rebirth with its tectonically memorable corridors and variously-sized rooms being used for art and architecture exhibitions on a fairly regular basis The building has been left untouched, complete with the patina and traces of years of occupation and use by University College Dublin It is currently home to the Irish Museum of Modern Art 1865 Office of Public Works EmmettScanlon photo: IMMA 6

7 Sean O'Casey Community Centre Saint Mary's Road 18 3 Dublin The intention of the project is to accommodate the energies of existing community activities within a new building, a place apart integrated within the larger consistency, a knot in the grain of the given pattern Four separately functioning blocks emerge from a single storey plinth which is cut out to form four courtyard gardens Three sizes of circular windows and roof-lights perforate the outer corrugated concrete shell Small portholes at eye-level, middle size windows at desk-level and larger openings at body-scale provide points of communication between the world within and the larger world outside the containment of the courtyard complex Childcare, day-care, sports and drama facilities are the functional components of the composition The courtyards provide diagonal transparencies between the different social activities of the centre, connecting old with young and relating passive and active recreations 2009 O'Donnell + Tuomey s Nazar The complex has many uses, opening hours may vary due to the difference in usage Visit the website for more information on opening hours and activities 5 mins walk from the Luas Spencer Dock station, 2 mins walk from bus routes 53 and

8 Bord Gáis Energy Theatre Grand Canal Square 1 2 Dublin Located on the Dublin waterfront, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, formerly the Grand Canal Theatre, is a 2,000-seat theater at the heart of a multi-use complex conceived for by the City of Dublin as part of a plan to revitalize its docklands The design concept for the theater, in fact, stages the theater's 'real' stage and the plaza as another, equally real but more provisional and changing stage At night, when the second floor lobby of the theater is crowded with theater-goers and the theater's tilting façade and plaza are illuminated, the latter 'stage' offers a particularly dramatic experience Daniel Libeskind Nazar depend on the schedule of performances Most of the public transport connections are on Pearse Street, south of the theatre Grand Canal Square Park is the closest parking garage 8
