4 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Gasometer City Guglgasse Vienna These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as part of the gasworks at Simmering After they were closed down, the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments, shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001 When they were built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe They are listed by the country s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of industrial architecture The renovation goal was to reuse the external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of demolition waste The gigantic size of this construction project is illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers Project is public! 5 photo: Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten Vertically Landscaped Housing Hardtmuthgasse 68 A-1100 Vienna On a corner plot in Vienna, Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten built a compact block of 17 apartments Balancing the high density of the project are the spacious communal amenities on the ground floor (workshop, hobby room, children?s room), the public roof garden and the private?gardens? in front of every living room In order to bring coherence to the large façade areas, including the curved soffits of the loggias, the architects opted for a corrugated aluminium sheeting that could be applied without seams The result is powerful and homogeneous But it?s an unconventional choice of material for a residential project where brick, wood or concrete tend to be the preferred option That surprise effect is precisely what the architects were aiming for In choosing corrugated aluminium they were also setting themselves the challenge of showing that a material they claim usually evokes negative associations can deliver an elegant building with a congenial atmosphere Project is not public! 6 photo: Lachlan Blair photo: Lachlan Blair Czerwenka Apartment Elisabethstraße Vienna The former apartment of the n singer Professor Oskar Czerwenka ( ) in the Opernringhof, that is situated in the centre of the City of Vienna, was reconstructed and adapted for rental by Vienna-based architect Susanne Zottl together with Kristof Jarder The sculptural object, that also serves as storage space, was designed to welcome residents and visitors and to connect living space, dining area and kitchen In its orientation and guiding gesture it opens up the space from the inner courtyard to the Operngasse and so communicates the spacious dimensions of the apartment While connecting on the one hand, the object also serves as a divider that provides privacy for the bedroom and the bathrooms photo: Lachlan Blair Project is not public! 7 photo: Werner Huthmacher photo: Werner Huthmacher Uniqa Tower Untere Donaustrasse Vienna Whereas in the past a head office might have been 'lit up' by means of illuminated logos, ads or spotlights, the advent of 'media façades' has greatly expanded the possibilities - not to everyone's delight, however, because when not careful the city can easily turn into a fairground where buildings vie for attention So when Licht Kunst Licht were commissioned to make a lighting plan for the Uniqa Tower, they were determined to use light 'in an artistic and sophisticated manner that would be techically 'state-of-the-art' They put individually controllable RGB LED video pixels in the cavity of the building's double façade, enough pixels to turn the 75-metre high sculptural tower into one big, continuous screen The artists group Mader Stublic Wiermann developed the artistic video "twists and turns" running on the video system that processes the video system processes 25 images per second, so the light play flows smoothly and makes the screen a 'second skin' Public access unknown! 2006 Main designer, Artist Supplier Lighting designer Neumann + Partner Mader, Stublic, Wiermann Barco Licht Kunst Licht Uniqa Tower Kirsten_Hannema photo: Nazar Leskiw 7

8 photo: DO & CO photo: DO & CO DO & CO hotel Stephansplatz Vienna DO & CO started as Attila Dogudan s Viennese empire of restaurants and luxury catering, but now includes an architecturally adventurous and sybaritic hotel experience in downtown Vienna Located across from St Stephen s Cathedral, the Haas Haus building was designed by Pritzker-prize winner Hans Hollein; later, in an unusual move, it was retrofitted to its present incarnation by Hollein himself Four floors of the steel-and-glass building have been transformed into 43 unique cone-shaped guest rooms offering majestic views of Stephansplatz, Graben and the Kärtnerstrasse Extravagant accommodations feature teak woodwork and stone integrated into a futuristic vision of modern design Bathrooms offer two-square-meter showers, flat-screen televisions and one suite has private fitness equipment (Design hotels) Project is public! 9 photo: Hertha Hurnaus photo: Hertha Hurnaus ma 48 Lidlgasse Vienna There are not just "service buildings", but structures that create a sense of identity The strong lines of the compact cubic structures are enhanced by flush windows and anthracite-coloured cladding made of copper-titanium-zinc alloy The very dark colour of the velvety metal sheets gives solid presence to the building, and slight surface irregularities add an element of liveliness An important contrasting design feature is the large floor-to-ceiling window on the top floor The clear run of glass up to the top line of the building creates a cut-out effect The inset roll-up doors on the ground floor provide visual tension, as they are the only planes that are not flush with the exterior building wall photo: Hertha Hurnaus Project is public! 10 Housing at Kaiserstrasse Kaiserstrasse Vienna This intervention involves an interesting compacting of the dense city since it takes over the traditional inner patio of the 19th urban development and considerably increases residential and population density in an already dense area The authors of the work explain the goodness of the building, whose most debatable aspect is its outer façade Project is not public! 11 Students Guest House at the Viennese University Molkereistrasse 1 A-1020 Vienna This hall of residence is added to an existing block The insertion of student residences in consolidated fabrics of cities, where housing costs hinder this group of the population from easily finding housing, promotes the rejuvenation of these kinds of neighbourhoods while bringing up the residential density This students guest house will be used to host 278 Erasmus students It is the first Viennese 'Passiv house' The façade design is based on a single window type bringing natural daylight into the students apartments The technical infrastructure of the building consists of a mechanical ventilation system, which is based on geothermics and heat recovery photo: Eduard Hueber Project is not public! 12 photo: Lucian Ilica Hundertwasserhaus Kegelgasse Vienna The Hundertwasserhaus is an apartment complex in Vienna,, designed by n artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser It was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan Hundertwasser was not paid, stating that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from being erected The house features a very organic design, with its uneven floors and plentiful flora Its roof is covered in grass and trees are grown from within, their limbs extending from the windows There are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes There are also artificial trees; the columns that can be seen reminded Hundertwasser of trees The windows and mosaic tiles are laid out not in a grid, but in a more playful organic way, with crooked angles Project is not public! 13 photo: Piotr Krajewski LEE Residential Housing Leebgasse 46 A-1100 Vienna This is a housing block with an open plan and essentially organised shell: the living division of which can be freely chosen by the client The orientation of the house can be decided by whoever uses it Morning sun, afternoon sun and a new orientation are all possible The service spaces are all compactly organised in the core, which makes room for an enormous bathroom An elementary, comfortable window bench invites you to take a seat This bench lies on the same level as the balcony Sunlight streams in through the elevated timber balcony deep into the house photo: Piotr Krajewski Project is not public! 14 photo: Piotr Krajewski Paltramplatz Residential Building Paltramplatz Vienna The appearance of the Paltramplatz Residential Building is that of a crisp-edged cube into the matte black surface of which an irregular relief pattern of ribbon windows and loggias have been embedded These windows and loggias make the compact monolith seem like a cabinet with drawers that can be pulled out at will The apartment building with its 22 units fills the gap in the heterogeneous fabric of its surroundings in an utterly natural and unspectacular way Forming an exciting contrast to the static tranquillity of the basic shape of the building is the trapezoidal cantilevered, rotated-off-axis, dynamic roof construction Here, holes have been made for illumination purposes This perforated, polygonal shed roof seems to hover over the building, creating an original and distinctive closure Project is not public! 15 photo: Nazar Leskiw Secession Building Friedrichstraße Vienna The large, white, cubic Secession Building was designed by architect Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1897 as the manifesto of the Secessionist movement The exhibition hall opened in October 1898 Most of the original interior was looted during World War II and the building was left in a desolate state until the passion for Viennese Art Nouveau was rediscovered in the 1970s and the pavilion rescued from decay The building is quite sober and only uses two colours, white and gold Due to its massive, unbroken walls, the construction has the appearance of being constructed from a series of solid cubes The most prominent feature of the otherwise clean design is the dome, made of 3,000 gilt laurel leaves The laurel symbolizes victory, dignity and purity Today the structure is one of the most treasured examples of a particularly Viennese artistic period (text from website Traveldk) photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is public! 16 Wiener Postsparkasse Georg-Coch-Platz Vienna Representing Otto Wagner's first move away from Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism, the Wiener Postsparkasse (n Postal Savings Bank) is regarded as an important early work of modern architecture The building occupies an entire city block, next to the Ringstrasse boulevard The bank's façade obviously alludes to classicism Wagner's key idea was to celebrate modern materials by developing new forms The entire façade is covered with square marble plates These are attached to the main structure by aluminum rivets or bolts, forming a pattern Inside, the main hall is designed like an atrium, with a large glass skylight allowing natural light to enter the heart of the building at all times Project is public! 17 Majolikahaus Linke Wienzeile Vienna This apartment building in Vienna, known as the Majolikahaus, was designed by n architect Otto Wagner at the turn of the 20th century The building's façade is covered in ceramic tiles, known as majolica, in the form a floral pattern The building is an excellent example of the Secession style, the Viennese version of Art Nouveau (text from Encarta) Project is not public! 1898 Otto Wagner Michiel_van_Loon 17

19 Spittelau District Heating Plant Spittelauer Lände 1090 Vienna Vienna has the persistence of its former mayor Helmut Zilk to thank for Hundertwasser having taken on the task of redesigning the exterior of the Spittelau District Heating Plant Originally Hundertwasser had opposed the idea upon consulting his friend, environmentalist Bernd Lötsch, as he had fundamental objections to a garbage-incinerating plant as long as all possibilities for avoiding garbage were not exhausted When it was promised that the plant would be equipped with the most modern emission-purification technology, and that apartments would be heated whose emissions would otherwise be a further source of pollution, Hundertwasser agreed to do the design The plain factory building was turned into a spectacular and unique work of art, and is an example of harmonic symbiosis between technology, ecology and art (text from Kunst Haus Wien) Project is not public! 1992, Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser Michiel_van_Loon 19

20 photo: Wojtek Gurak Schlachthausgasse Schlachthausgasse Vienna At the end of 1998, the Mautner-Markhof Children's Hospital in the 3rd district of Vienna was closed In 1999 the municipality explored alternative development possibilities for the vacant area A limited design competition was held, from which Coop Himmelb(l)au emerged as the winner The architects suggested to conserve to a large extent the valuable trees existing along the Kleingasse and set two slim building volumes in line with the street Slachthausgasse in order to return the urban block into it's previously defined form The complex now contains 82 apartments and approximately m2 of office space The 6+1-storey building is individually differentiated by sculpturally protruding building components In the so-called 'Head Building' oriented toward the south, a youth centre with own meeting spaces is the basement is integrated (text from website architects) Project is not public! 22 Branch Bank Building Favoritenstraße Vienna The functional interior space of the Branch Bank Building of the Z-Bank in Vienna can be read from outside The interacting, half-storey displaced floors are summarized in one single room, which connects the out-and-inside with its overhanging 'mouth' Veins of movement and rest areas are determing the general use The municipal use in the upper floors is elevated - 'the house with the kink' The shape of the roof is adding up to the whole of the building and links the sky to the ground Concrete, steel and metal are the dominating materials Each material appears in the way it was manufactured Construction and technical installations are displayed open All of these architectural elements are part of the design, linked to the whole appearance of the building and also to the neighbourhood The interaction of these parts is resulting in the complex unity of this kind of architecture (text from website architect) Project is public! 24 Schullin Jewelry Shop Kohlmarkt Vienna In this jewelry shop in Vienna, ornament is both message and medium Hans Hollein has taken the basic shell of a 19th-century building, corrected it slightly, and painted it white He then superimposed a clearly differentiated layer of elements not only functional but fantastic and luxurious Paradoxically for a jewelry shop (and quite intentionally), he has used materials in flagrant disregard of their real value: some are precious and some are common, but all, glowing or glittering, tease the visitor with an impression of wealth and mystery Real marble is used in the patterned floor, but in the black-curtained backworld of the safe, under a mock skylight, plastic laminate pretends to be marble Real bronze is used as an arch/guillotine over the entrance, but a headless 'bronzed' African bust is in fact plastic (text from 'Ornament is no crime', Progressive ure/ny) Public access unknown! 1974 Hans Hollein Herbert Schullin Michiel_van_Loon 24
