3 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Gasometer City Guglgasse Vienna These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as part of the gasworks at Simmering After they were closed down, the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments, shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001 When they were built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe They are listed by the country s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of industrial architecture The renovation goal was to reuse the external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of demolition waste The gigantic size of this construction project is illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers Project is public! 4 photo: Lucian Ilica Hundertwasserhaus Kegelgasse Vienna The Hundertwasserhaus is an apartment complex in Vienna,, designed by n artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser It was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan Hundertwasser was not paid, stating that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from being erected The house features a very organic design, with its uneven floors and plentiful flora Its roof is covered in grass and trees are grown from within, their limbs extending from the windows There are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes There are also artificial trees; the columns that can be seen reminded Hundertwasser of trees The windows and mosaic tiles are laid out not in a grid, but in a more playful organic way, with crooked angles Project is not public! 5 photo: Michiel van Loon Secession Building Friedrichstraße Vienna The large, white, cubic Secession Building was designed by architect Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1897 as the manifesto of the Secessionist movement The exhibition hall opened in October 1898 Most of the original interior was looted during World War II and the building was left in a desolate state until the passion for Viennese Art Nouveau was rediscovered in the 1970s and the pavilion rescued from decay The building is quite sober and only uses two colours, white and gold Due to its massive, unbroken walls, the construction has the appearance of being constructed from a series of solid cubes The most prominent feature of the otherwise clean design is the dome, made of 3,000 gilt laurel leaves The laurel symbolizes victory, dignity and purity Today the structure is one of the most treasured examples of a particularly Viennese artistic period (text from website Traveldk) Project is public! 7 photo: Michiel van Loon photo: Wojtek Gurak Schlachthausgasse Schlachthausgasse Vienna At the end of 1998, the Mautner-Markhof Children's Hospital in the 3rd district of Vienna was closed In 1999 the municipality explored alternative development possibilities for the vacant area A limited design competition was held, from which Coop Himmelb(l)au emerged as the winner The architects suggested to conserve to a large extent the valuable trees existing along the Kleingasse and set two slim building volumes in line with the street Slachthausgasse in order to return the urban block into it's previously defined form The complex now contains 82 apartments and approximately m2 of office space The 6+1-storey building is individually differentiated by sculpturally protruding building components In the so-called 'Head Building' oriented toward the south, a youth centre with own meeting spaces is the basement is integrated (text from website architects) Project is not public! 8 photo: Vera Subkus photo: Vera Subkus Conversion of the Palais Rasumofsky Rasumofskygasse Vienna The palais was built for Andrei Kirillowitsch Duke Rasumofsky, the former Russian ambassador under Czar Alexander during the time of the Viennese Congress of 1806 As a patron of Beethoven and the flourishing art movement, Duke Rasumofsky selected Belgian architect Louis Montoyer to create the ensemble of three buildings with a floor area comprising over 11000m2 surrounding a central park located in central Vienna Alois the 2nd, Duke of Liechtenstein, resided in the palais from which later became state owned shortly thereafter before being acquired recently by two significant contemporary art collectors who commissioned the conversion into an art foundation and private residence The central building was damaged during World War II and poorly repaired and maintained during the post-war period leading to significant problems photo: Vera Subkus Project is not public! 9 Otto Wagner Pavilion Karlsplatz Vienna Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station is a former station of the Viennese Stadtbahn The buildings above ground on Karlsplatz are a well-known example of Jugendstil architecture These buildings were included in The Vienna Secession, as they followed many of the artistic styles of that movement They were designed by Otto Wagner, adviser to the Transport Commission in Vienna,and Joseph Maria Olbrich and are, unlike the other Stadtbahn stations, made of a steel framework with marble slabs mounted on the exterior Project is public! 1899 Main designer, Otto Wagner Joseph Maria Olbrich Nazar 9

10 SEG Apartment Tower Kratochwjlestraße Vienna Located between Wagramerstraße and Kratochwilestraße and adjacent to the "Alte Donau" metro station, the 60m high SEG Tower from COOP HIMMELB(L)AU forms in conjunction with two other projected high-rise buildings the new district "Donau City" The tower includes 70 apartments, 9 eating facilities, offices and practices on 25 floors Two major considerations were important for the design of the outer form of the COOP HIMMELB(L)AU building: On the one hand the concept of the tower is based on the idea to put two houses, one on top of the other, in a way such that a common space would occur at the intersection This common space - called a sky-lobby - is then used for the accommodation of a venue, a playground, a "teleworking café" and a sundeck On the other hand the concept of the so-called climate facade was developed, which is the linking and surrounding element between the two components Project is public! 1998 Nazar 10
