5 photo: Michael Fontana photo: Vladimr Spacek Cantonal and Regional Hospital Loestrasse Chur The existing hospital required a new ward and treatment areas The original project from G Brun and R Gaberel ( ) was extended over three stages, resulting in a ring-shaped system, which does not lend itself well to further expansion The first step therefore, was to define a new concept for the circulation, which would connect the old and new buildings in a clear and logical manner The connection is of a public nature; it leads from the entry through the cafeteria to the waiting areas and further entry areas of the various departments, in the same way as streets and squares in a city that are connected through perspective and spatial tension The concept for the ward sets Public and Private into coexistence The interior street is a place of intense use and, simultaneously, a meeting place The patient room, as the most private space, is characterised by a bay window allowing the patients a connection with the landscape photo: Michael Fontana Floor area/size m² Building costs consultant Client Silvia Gmür Reto Gmür Architekten Walter Dietsche Baumanagement Stiftung Rätisches Kantons-und Regionalspital Chur mec 5

7 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Shelters for Roman Archaeological Site Seilerbahnweg Chur Protective housing for the remains of the foundations of three Roman Buildings (which one of those only a corner is visible) This protective casing for the archaeological finds was conceived as a kind of abstract reconstruction of the Roman volumes: a lightweight framework for walls made of timer lamella which admit light and air exactly follows the Roman outer walls, thus producing a package-like effect which give a visible form to location of the Roman buildings in today's city landscape photo: João Morgado Client Peter Zumthor City of Chur JMMM 7

8 photo: Heinrich Helfenstein photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Chasa RTR Masanserstrasse Chur The local Radio e Televisiun Ramantscha (RTR) is the main occupant of this mighty six-storey angled structure, which completes a larger architectural quadrangle at the entrance to Chur's old city centre What is remarkable is that despite its expressive and incisive form, the building steps back and puts itself and its presentation at the service of the urban space For the observant viewer the almost banal looking window grid has a few surprises in store It is made of concrete, poured in one piece and subsequently bush-hammered, which is to say rough-hewn with a hammer and chisel - a process that exposes the concrete's main constituent, in this case Rhine gravel The monolithic effect of the façade has its significance: instead of a stuck-on 'outer skin' it becomes a massive, five-storey-high, load-bearing structure, resting on only three supports towards the square and street This static tour de force turns the heftily protruding mass into a light-footed elephant photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Project is not public! 2006 Client Staufer & Hasler Architekten Chur Municipality + SRG 'idée suisse' Bern Axel_Simon 8

9 photo: Ralph Kent photo: Ralph Kent Atelier Zumthor Suesswinggel Haldenstein This is Peter Zumthor's studio in the small village of Haldenstein, just outside of Chur in the Graubunden region of The first studio was built in 1986, with the concrete extension adjacent to his private family home - added in 2005 Project is not public! 1986 Peter Zumthor jrhartley photo: Ralph Kent The area is not fenced off, but your attention is drawn to a small plaque near the door of the concrete atelier extension which reminds people that this is Peter Zumthor's family home and to respect his privacy Park in the centre of Haldenstein and wander up north, you will pass the Zumthor atelier 9
