3 Gasometer City Guglgasse Vienna These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as part of the gasworks at Simmering After they were closed down, the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments, shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001 When they were built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe They are listed by the country s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of industrial architecture The renovation goal was to reuse the external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of demolition waste The gigantic size of this construction project is illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers Floor area/size m² Main designer, Client Coop Himmelb(l)au Jean Nouvel Manfred Wedhorn Wilhelm Holzbauer City of Vienna Bjorn_Utpott There are very different opening hours for different functions, like the cinema, shopping malls, offices to see it all, visit From Westbahnhof take U-bahn U3 directly to the Gasometer, with direction Simmering (about 20 min) 3

5 photo: Klaus Frahm arturimages photo: Klaus Frahm arturimages Headquarter Volksbank Vienna Kolingasse Vienna The new headquarters of the Österreichische Volksbank, s fourth largest bank, sits in the heart of Vienna s historic Innere Stadt or Inner City This district, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presented great opportunities as well as great challenges for the designers Most importantly, the building had to embrace the historical context of the old city while presenting the client s corporate identity to the modern world To complement the architecture at the heart of this World Cultural Heritage site, says Roth, the outside of the building exercises a discrete restraint while not appearing too humble The width and height in the interior of the building, on the other hand, allow ÖVAG the space to present itself as a modern bank While, around the world, other banking institutions dream of leaving their mark on the skyline, this building s interior, with it s enclosed six towers, gives the bank its own unique internal skyline Project is not public! 6 MUMOK - Museum Moderner Kunst Museumsplatz Vienna A dark, closed block The curved roof is pulled far down at the corners; the entire building is enclosed in a 12-cm-thick shell made of basalt lava An outdoor flight of steps, 10 metres wide, leads to the entrance level that lies 4 metres higher than the level of the courtyard This entrance level is at the centre of the building in terms of height There are two main exhibition floors above it and two below; a further basement level is used as for depots and for the building services 2003 Ortner & Ortner Nazar 6

7 Wienerberg City Hertha-Firnberg-Straße Vienna Within the tower ensemble "Wienerberg City", next to the Twin Towers Vienna the apartment towers of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU form the completion to the west and define together with the 5 story building a in height refined ensemble of 350 residential units Both towers with 80 and 60 meters height and the 5 story building are based on a loft concept with flexible open floor plans The three skylobbies in 20 and 26 meter height define characteristic community spaces for each building and are interconnected by a Skyloop These spaces are part of our strategy of increased space quality - a two story lobby with concierge, ecotechnical arrangements such as climatic facades and winter gardens that supplement each unit and form two story high spaces in the maisonette-apartments The residential towers rise up out of a modeled landscape and tie the area of the "Wienerberg City" to the topography of the parks around Floor area/size m² Coop Himmelb(l)au Nazar 7

9 Library and Learning Centre Welthandelsplatz Vienna The new Library and Learning Centre of the University of Economics in Vienna rises as a polygonal block from the heart of the new University campus The interior of the LLC is informed by the external landscape of the masterplan which maps out the different levels The straight lines of the building's exterior separate as they move inward, becoming curvilinear and fluid to generate a free-formed interior canyon that serves as the principal public plaza of the centre, as well as generating corridors and bridges ensuring smooth transitions between different levels Floor area/size m² Zaha Hadid s Nazar Building opening hours when classes are in session: Mon Fri 7:00am 10:00pm; Sat 7:00am 6:00pm These opening hours also apply during the semester break The Library & Learning Center (LC) is located between the 2 U2 subway stations Messe-Prater and Krieau, roughly the same distance from each of these 2 stations (5 10 min) The underground parking garage is located under the main boulevard, the entrance is on Trabrennstrasse Cycling is prohibited on campus grounds Appr 1,000 bicycle parking spaces are located along the bike path circling around the campus Citybike sharing stations are located at the south entrance of Campus and at the subway 9
