4 Gasometer City Guglgasse Vienna These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as part of the gasworks at Simmering After they were closed down, the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments, shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001 When they were built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe They are listed by the country s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of industrial architecture The renovation goal was to reuse the external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of demolition waste The gigantic size of this construction project is illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers Floor area/size m² Main designer, Client Coop Himmelb(l)au Jean Nouvel Manfred Wedhorn Wilhelm Holzbauer City of Vienna Bjorn_Utpott There are very different opening hours for different functions, like the cinema, shopping malls, offices to see it all, visit From Westbahnhof take U-bahn U3 directly to the Gasometer, with direction Simmering (about 20 min) 4

5 Students Guest House at the Viennese University Molkereistrasse 1 A-1020 Vienna This hall of residence is added to an existing block The insertion of student residences in consolidated fabrics of cities, where housing costs hinder this group of the population from easily finding housing, promotes the rejuvenation of these kinds of neighbourhoods while bringing up the residential density This students guest house will be used to host 278 Erasmus students It is the first Viennese 'Passiv house' The façade design is based on a single window type bringing natural daylight into the students apartments The technical infrastructure of the building consists of a mechanical ventilation system, which is based on geothermics and heat recovery photo: Eduard Hueber Project is not public! 6 photo: Piotr Krajewski LEE Residential Housing Leebgasse 46 A-1100 Vienna This is a housing block with an open plan and essentially organised shell: the living division of which can be freely chosen by the client The orientation of the house can be decided by whoever uses it Morning sun, afternoon sun and a new orientation are all possible The service spaces are all compactly organised in the core, which makes room for an enormous bathroom An elementary, comfortable window bench invites you to take a seat This bench lies on the same level as the balcony Sunlight streams in through the elevated timber balcony deep into the house photo: Piotr Krajewski Project is not public! 7 photo: Michiel van Loon Secession Building Friedrichstraße Vienna The large, white, cubic Secession Building was designed by architect Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1897 as the manifesto of the Secessionist movement The exhibition hall opened in October 1898 Most of the original interior was looted during World War II and the building was left in a desolate state until the passion for Viennese Art Nouveau was rediscovered in the 1970s and the pavilion rescued from decay The building is quite sober and only uses two colours, white and gold Due to its massive, unbroken walls, the construction has the appearance of being constructed from a series of solid cubes The most prominent feature of the otherwise clean design is the dome, made of 3,000 gilt laurel leaves The laurel symbolizes victory, dignity and purity Today the structure is one of the most treasured examples of a particularly Viennese artistic period (text from website Traveldk) Client Joseph Maria Olbrich Vereinigung Bildener Künstler Oesterreichs Michiel_van_Loon Tuesday - Sunday: ; Thursday: / Guided tours Saturdays at 1500 and Sundays at

10 photo: Michiel van Loon photo: Wojtek Gurak Schlachthausgasse Schlachthausgasse Vienna At the end of 1998, the Mautner-Markhof Children's Hospital in the 3rd district of Vienna was closed In 1999 the municipality explored alternative development possibilities for the vacant area A limited design competition was held, from which Coop Himmelb(l)au emerged as the winner The architects suggested to conserve to a large extent the valuable trees existing along the Kleingasse and set two slim building volumes in line with the street Slachthausgasse in order to return the urban block into it's previously defined form The complex now contains 82 apartments and approximately m2 of office space The 6+1-storey building is individually differentiated by sculpturally protruding building components In the so-called 'Head Building' oriented toward the south, a youth centre with own meeting spaces is the basement is integrated (text from website architects) Project is not public! 12 photo: Hertha Hurnaus photo: Hertha Hurnaus Krautgarten Am Krautgarten Vienna The property lies in a green zone at the periphery of Vienna and is surrounded by small houses and small apartment complexes The atmosphere that future tenants associate with this site is one of 'living in green surroundings', ideally: one's own house and garden the intention is to also convey this atmosphere in the housing project itself The individual apartments are designed as separate houses with multiple floors and various views of the surroundings the individual units are interlocked and fit together to create the overall structure, although the krautgarten project is a four-story building, each individual living unit was designed to be as self-contained as possible photo: Hertha Hurnaus Project is not public! 14 photo: Klaus Frahm arturimages photo: Klaus Frahm arturimages Headquarter Volksbank Vienna Kolingasse Vienna The new headquarters of the Österreichische Volksbank, s fourth largest bank, sits in the heart of Vienna s historic Innere Stadt or Inner City This district, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presented great opportunities as well as great challenges for the designers Most importantly, the building had to embrace the historical context of the old city while presenting the client s corporate identity to the modern world To complement the architecture at the heart of this World Cultural Heritage site, says Roth, the outside of the building exercises a discrete restraint while not appearing too humble The width and height in the interior of the building, on the other hand, allow ÖVAG the space to present itself as a modern bank While, around the world, other banking institutions dream of leaving their mark on the skyline, this building s interior, with it s enclosed six towers, gives the bank its own unique internal skyline Project is not public! 15 Donaucity Church Donau-City-Straße Vienna The Donau City Church, known more formally by its dedication as Christus, Hoffnung der Welt ("Christ, Hope of the World") is a Roman Catholic parish church in Vienna's 22nd district The church is located next to the Vienna International Centre Its architect is Heinz Tesar 2003 Heinz Tesar 15

16 Judenplatz Museum Judenplatz Vienna Rachel Whiteread's design for the Holocaust memorial has no obvious points of reference to the remains of a medieval synagogue discovered underneath Judenplatz It is therefore complemented by two other architectural features - the square itself and the Judenplatz Museum in the Mizrachi House, which hosts an exhibition on the life of Vienna's Jewish community during the Middle Ages The square and the adjoining streets now form a self-contained pedestrian area dominated by the Holocaust memorial and the statue of Lessing It seemed an obvious choice to use the old granite paving stones typical for the city centre for the paving; stones of different size accentuate the transitions from streets to square and the street gutters The lighting system installed on the roofs of the surrounding buildings allows an even illumination of the urban space 2003 Jabornegg & Pálffy s 16

18 City Tower 1 Marxergasse Vienna The 87-metre high City Tower was the first phase of the Wien Mitte construction project to be completed Its figure reacts to the urban topography Following the bend made by the River Wien two different directions in the urban plan, at an angle to each other, interlock here The massive building plinth clad with reddish sandstone follows the line of the street and connects to the existing development The tower that rises above it is terminated by a glass cube, swivelled in relation to the main volume of the building Ten-metre-tall loggias create transparent transitions from the street to the large entrance hall and the 30-metre-highl, glass-roofed atrium which forms a communicative centre point 2004 Main designer, Neumann + Partner Ortner & Ortner 18

19 Saturn Tower Leonard Bernstein Straße Vienna The Saturn Tower is an office skyscraper in the 22nd district of Vienna Danube city It was built in the years 2003 to 2004 designed by Heinz Neumann and Hans Hollein in the Donau City district The 90 meter high building is situated in the north-western part of the Danube City following the Mischek Tower Floor area/size m² Main designer, Hans Hollein Neumann + Partner 19

20 Otto Wagner Pavilion Karlsplatz Vienna Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station is a former station of the Viennese Stadtbahn The buildings above ground on Karlsplatz are a well-known example of Jugendstil architecture These buildings were included in The Vienna Secession, as they followed many of the artistic styles of that movement They were designed by Otto Wagner, adviser to the Transport Commission in Vienna,and Joseph Maria Olbrich and are, unlike the other Stadtbahn stations, made of a steel framework with marble slabs mounted on the exterior 1899 Main designer, Otto Wagner Joseph Maria Olbrich 20

21 Leopold Museum Museumsplatz Vienna A block clad on all sides with white mussel limestone, 24 metres high and embedded 13 metres in the ground From a distance the single windows give the impression of a private house Only when closer to the building do you grasp that they are actually oversized in format and measure 22 by 38 metres In angled sunlight the block, initially apparently smooth, reveals differently structured surfaces that give the stony mass a curious transparency, the rooms behind seem to shimmer through the facade 2004 Ortner & Ortner 21

22 MUMOK - Museum Moderner Kunst Museumsplatz Vienna A dark, closed block The curved roof is pulled far down at the corners; the entire building is enclosed in a 12-cm-thick shell made of basalt lava An outdoor flight of steps, 10 metres wide, leads to the entrance level that lies 4 metres higher than the level of the courtyard This entrance level is at the centre of the building in terms of height There are two main exhibition floors above it and two below; a further basement level is used as for depots and for the building services 2003 Ortner & Ortner 22

23 Wien Mitte Landstraßer Hauptstraße 1b 1030 Vienna The railway station Wien Mitte is seven minutes on foot from the historic centre of the city, Stephansplatz The station itself is a hub for all important local transport lines This is where the Wien Mitte Centre is to be created: a slab measuring m² erected above the tracks on which the new centre is defined architecturally by an L-shaped glass block that, together with the existing market hall, forms an open U in the direction of Marxerbrücke In the enclosed internal area two sculptural building volumes determine the appearance: the glass banana along the market hall and the ski boot, a hook-shaped high-rise that soars above the ensemble Wien Mitte photo: Ortner & Ortner 2010 Ortner & Ortner 23

24 Wienerberg City Hertha-Firnberg-Straße Vienna Within the tower ensemble "Wienerberg City", next to the Twin Towers Vienna the apartment towers of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU form the completion to the west and define together with the 5 story building a in height refined ensemble of 350 residential units Both towers with 80 and 60 meters height and the 5 story building are based on a loft concept with flexible open floor plans The three skylobbies in 20 and 26 meter height define characteristic community spaces for each building and are interconnected by a Skyloop These spaces are part of our strategy of increased space quality - a two story lobby with concierge, ecotechnical arrangements such as climatic facades and winter gardens that supplement each unit and form two story high spaces in the maisonette-apartments The residential towers rise up out of a modeled landscape and tie the area of the "Wienerberg City" to the topography of the parks around Floor area/size m² Coop Himmelb(l)au 24

25 SEG Apartment Tower Kratochwjlestraße Vienna Located between Wagramerstraße and Kratochwilestraße and adjacent to the "Alte Donau" metro station, the 60m high SEG Tower from COOP HIMMELB(L)AU forms in conjunction with two other projected high-rise buildings the new district "Donau City" The tower includes 70 apartments, 9 eating facilities, offices and practices on 25 floors Two major considerations were important for the design of the outer form of the COOP HIMMELB(L)AU building: On the one hand the concept of the tower is based on the idea to put two houses, one on top of the other, in a way such that a common space would occur at the intersection This common space - called a sky-lobby - is then used for the accommodation of a venue, a playground, a "teleworking café" and a sundeck On the other hand the concept of the so-called climate facade was developed, which is the linking and surrounding element between the two components 1998 Coop Himmelb(l)au 25

27 Library and Learning Centre Welthandelsplatz Vienna The new Library and Learning Centre of the University of Economics in Vienna rises as a polygonal block from the heart of the new University campus The interior of the LLC is informed by the external landscape of the masterplan which maps out the different levels The straight lines of the building's exterior separate as they move inward, becoming curvilinear and fluid to generate a free-formed interior canyon that serves as the principal public plaza of the centre, as well as generating corridors and bridges ensuring smooth transitions between different levels Floor area/size m² Zaha Hadid s Building opening hours when classes are in session: Mon Fri 7:00am 10:00pm; Sat 7:00am 6:00pm These opening hours also apply during the semester break The Library & Learning Center (LC) is located between the 2 U2 subway stations Messe-Prater and Krieau, roughly the same distance from each of these 2 stations (5 10 min) The underground parking garage is located under the main boulevard, the entrance is on Trabrennstrasse Cycling is prohibited on campus grounds Appr 1,000 bicycle parking spaces are located along the bike path circling around the campus Citybike sharing stations are located at the south entrance of Campus and at the subway 27

28 Teaching Center Welthandelsplatz Vienna The new academic space, located at the north-east of the new Campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business is as a venue for multiple networking More than a mere building, the Teaching Center is a learning platform that promotes spontaneous communication while also making it possible to undertake the classes and activities that occur within This quest for spontaneous exchange has different levels and scales sharing one common denominator: the path is the goal According to the architect, a contemporary Teaching Center should encourage curiosity in the everyday routine of those who teach as well as those who learn, becoming a place where moving about and getting on stage does not lead to experiencing spatial boundaries by instead giving free reign to the imagination 2013 Supplier BUSarchitektur GIRA 28

29 Plus Zwei Vorgartenstraße Vienna For Plus Zwei, Martin Kohlbauer focused on transparent architecture and eye-catching shapes In total, OMV has roughly 41,000 m² of state-of-the-art office space at its disposal The grounds of the Viertel Zwei project are located directly along the new section of the U2 metro line, between Vorgartenstraße and the Krieau racing track, and are right next to the Messe Wien convention centre The city centre is just a few metro stations away, and several main motorways are in the direct vicinity 2009 Developer Martin Kohlbauer Architekt IC Projektentwicklung 29

30 WU Executive Academy Welthandelsplatz Vienna The distinctive black and silver Executive Academy building for researchers and mature students anchors the western end of the campus promenade Designed by Madrid-based NOMAD, the building appears as an irregular stack of blocks The facade is covered in glass and aluminium, materials used to create degrees of transparency and reflection Window patterns appear to follow the lines of a maze, or a circuit board, but were calculated according to an algorithm program Windows all have thermal protection and light-filtering systems Inside, soaring window sections and pure concrete contrast with mirrored panels so that some rooms have a stark, cathedral-like atmosphere The seven floors offer 18,000 sq m (194,000 sq ft) of teaching and learning spaces

31 Departmental Building Welthandelsplatz Vienna No less striking, though less colorful, the Departmental building by Estudio Carme Pinós plays with rigid geometries Windows and casements in gray metal flow in a zig-zag pattern over white walls These patterned volumes alternate with solid gray orthogonal sections, all joined by a curved central form Stepped and circular cut-out shapes are used throughout the interior, demonstrating some of Pinós? trademark attention to quirky details To help maintain internal temperatures, window shutters open and close automatically according to solar conditions 2013 Estudio Carme Pinós 31

32 Ville Verdi Otto-Herschmann-Gasse Vienna Ville Verdi is an apartment buildings in ViennaThe five "Green Mansions" with an average of square foot apartment in the 11th district of the n capital are listed as a flagship project of social housing The facade is designed ventilated double skin and placed at a distance of 20 to 40 millimetres to the house walls This prevents overheat the building or damage caused by steam condensation Floor area/size m² Albert Wimmer 32

33 Pleasure Dome Guglgasse Vienna The building is designed as a bearing before the gasometer structure, a kind of topological, "Scenic" architecture A public space limiting "base", the impregnated transparent and translucent in colour and light, to form a large urban sculpture, mediates between inside and outside and tries to establish a new reference to the city 2008 Rüdiger Lainer + Partner 33

34 photo: SUPERBLOCK photo: SUPERBLOCK Wohnen mit scharf Ernst-Melchior-Gasse Vienna The site of the former train station Nordbahnhof in the second district is currently considered one of the largest inner-city development areas in Vienna The building 'Wohnen mit scharf!' designed by SUPERBLOCK is part of a cooperation between a developer, two architect's offices and a residential community The sculpted design of the balconies combined with the bright-coloured openings in the otherwise solid cubature lends the building a high recognition value and allows identifying the residents with their home The vertically layered residential floors of the project 'Wohnen mit scharf!' enable broad public use of the ground floor area, thus underlining the urban character of the quarter 'Wohnen mit scharf!' is an exemplary project that alongside with aesthetic and architectural quality focuses on individual and intergenerational functionality photo: Hertha Hurnaus Project is not public! 35 photo: Severin Wurnig photo: Severin Wurnig The Room Sofiensäle Maxergasse Vienna The main focus of this design is the connection between the long tradition of the building of Sofiensäle and modern, contemporary architecture The Room is a café, bar, restaurant and club in one location The day design offers bright colors and a cozy feel-good atmosphere for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or just a cup of coffee or tea, whilst the central bar area bribes the visitors at night with different lightning moods and fancy cocktails The location includes a smoking and a non smoking area on a total of 500 square meters The smoking room offers a huge open window front and is located near the street area By planning the kitchen facilities in the basement, the ground area is all available for the restaurant rooms The entire design consists of many traditional materials: natural woods from an oak, felt made from recycled PET bottles and handmade concrete tiles from Morocco The two bars are located in the center of the The Room and include eye-catching background design photo: Severin Wurnig 2014 Soehne & Partner Architekten SoehneParnter 35
