8 Matosinhos Fish Market R do Conde de São Salvador 4450 Matosinhos Built between 1936 and 1946, this market was projected by a Porto based architecture firm ARS-Arquitectos This building is an icon for this area of the city, located next to Leixões Port It's all made in light concrete It remains almost intact since it's first appearance 1946 ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos Joao_Sousa daytime By the Porto subway system in the blue line it's the last stop "Mercado de Matosinhos" 8

10 Bouça Housing Complex Rua Melo II Porto This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting In 1977 there where only two blocks completed Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces 2004, Urban planner SAAL Joao_Sousa Only the public spaces are public, it's a housing complex Take the subway in Porto till the station "Lapa" it's right there! 10

11 photo: Carlos Dias photo: Tiago Oliveira Piscina das Marés Avenida da Liberdade Matosinhos Developed and built between 1961 and 1966, this building became one of the most interesting buildings to visit in Porto since Álvaro Siza designed it As still a young architect, Siza was appointed to design a new swimming pool at Leça da Palmeira right between the rocks and the sea He spent months drawing and feeling the environment so he could design a building that fitted perfectly along the shore It's architecture made from the site and for the site All the materials are raw Concrete, wood and steel are all processed with traditional techniques of constructing photo: Tobias 1966, Artist, Urban planner Joao_Sousa Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos From May to September: Monday to Sunday from 9:00h till 20:00h There are buses coming from the center of Porto By car take the highway A28 from Porto to the north and exit to "Leixões" Port From there go always straight ahead near the sea till you reach the big avenue where it is 11

12 Casa das Artes Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics 1981, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Secretaria de Estado da Cultura Take a bus from the city center that passes on the street "Rua do Campo Alegre", or at the "Avenida da Boavista" From there it's easy to reach it by foot 12

13 photo: Luca Silenzi photo: Luca Silenzi Food Container Remixed Piazzale Matteotti Porto Sant'Elpidio Italy From box to hypercube This brand new commercial building (surface: 2500 m2) is a part of a wider urban district planned from Spacelab ure since 2006 in the city of Porto Sant`Elpidio - middle Italy, in the course of completion The client brief: maximum formal impact in the limits of precast construction and basic tipology (medium-commercial function) Spacelab intended this limits as an occasion to conduct the modular precast construction to new formal results Mixing two structural systems (precast concrete grid+steel truss), the box resulting from urban plan parameters (maximum surface and height) is complicated in the entrance side by a prismatic intrusion in the original volume, distinguished by using glass and other translucent materials in comparison to other opaque fronts The other sides are characterized using precast custom-made concrete envelope, deniing modules by a continue abstract texture visually connecting each panel to the contiguous photo: Luca Silenzi Floor area/size m², Urban planner Contractor Structural engineer Spacelab s GIL Costruzion Spacelab s Spacelab 13

14 Artists Workshop rua da lada 4050 Porto The building has 4 ateliers for young artists Its location, right next to the river "Douro" has a wonderful view of the "D Luiz I" Bridge, the river and the south coast of the city of "Gaia" This project integrates a system of platforms and granite walls in stories and stairs that connects the building to the street at the ground level The great sensibility and beautifulness of the urban tissue and it's great presence in the site conducted to the option of creating a building that is discreet The object consists in an association of two planes in "sandwich", with glass walls over a platform Project is not public! 1996 Virgínio Moutinho Young Artists Joao_Sousa Right next to the main Bridge in Porto "D Luiz I" and it stands on the top of the tunnel that gives access to the old city Several Buses to get there and with the "Funicular dos Guindais", the elevator 14

16 Children Library Rua de Entre Quintas 4050 Porto This small pavilion located between the trees in the gardens of the Crystal Palace has two levels with a double height vestibule The library appears as an "objet trouvé" in the nature, participating in this spontaneous environment The volume resembles an old train wagon, lifted slightly off the ground turning it into a light and welcoming space The used materials were chosen according to the environment, following the textures and colours of the nature The structure and wall panels are made out of wood and the windows are sheets of transparent polycarbonate located at the height of the children with awesome views to the gardens It's a building that fits perfectly in this natural environment 1997 Paula Santos Câmar Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa Monday: Tuesday-Saturday: It's located in the gardens of the Crystal Palace You need to search and follow the signs "Biblioteca Infantil" to reach it 16

17 photo: Carlos Dias Trindade Subway Station Rua de Camões 4000 Porto Built to be the central subway station, "Trindade" has an interface that connects 2 subway lines resulting in a big subway station with commercial spaces The materialization of the architecture is almost the space as all the other subway stations in the center of Porto and it reflects a lot of the northern portuguese way of building White walls, granite floors, ceramic tiles, rough granite stone walls, all of these elements appear in the tradicional constructions and were recreated to fit the contemporary design resulting in some very interesting spaces 2002 Eduardo Souto de Moura Metro do Porto Joao_Sousa from 600h - 100h but it depends of the months By the subway just get to "Trindade" subway station In the heart of the old city right beside the Trindade Church and the city hall 17

18 Housing Complex Rua Orfeão do Porto 4150 Porto Built in white reinforced concrete this housing complex is formed by two separate blocks connected by the mainly vertical access with the lift and the staircase All the floors are composed by an external gallery that connects all the appartments allowing them to face the great views of the sea and to receive good sunlight With a very simple and contemporary language this complex establishes new ways of drawing the housing complex in a simple and elegant manner Project is not public! 2007 Adalberto Dias Joao_Sousa Located on the western part of the city, right beside the "ring", it's easy to reach if you have the "Ipanema Park Hotel" as a reference point 18

19 Burgo Tower Avenida da Boavista Porto This office complex is located in the Avenida da Boavista, the biggest straight line avenue in that extends from "Casa da Música" till the Sea in West This complex opens a large square between the two buildings, one horizontal and the other vertical The square is occupied by a big sculpture by the Porto architect/sculptor Nadir de Afonso The buildings were drawn with very simple shapes, following the influences of Mies and the Chicago buildings The main interest about the building is its façade Its skin is composed out of a single module that wraps all the volumes That module was studied so it could fit on 2 different ways creating a glass façade and an opaque façade Public access unknown! 20 Housing Block Rua do Teatro Porto This housing block situated on the western part of Porto, in front of the Atlantic ocean is a conceptual reinvention of the traditional urban houses of the XVIII century Instead of a stone structure, here the structure is in steel but is completely visible and separated from the other elements But at the same time there are traditional materials that were used on the façades, transposing the modern architecture into a more site related project Project is not public! 1995, Interior architect, Urban planner Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa On the western part of Porto called "Foz" it's easy to reach From the avenue "Avenida do Brasil" that follows the coast line 20

21 Bom Sucesso Market Rua de Caldas Xavier 4150 Porto This building was one of the first buildings to be built in this zone In 1951 the works begin to give shape to this project Its structure of reinforced concrete is made out of pre-casted beams disposed in a radial shape The way the entry of light is designed and works in the interior is absolutely incredible and shows a great sensibility in this subject Even after more than 50 years of use, this building remains almost as good as new All the spatial richness is still present and as a market it has a rich social life photo: Carlos Dias 1952 ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa From around 700h till 1700h Right next to the square where there is "Casa da Música" It's less than five minute walk from the metro station 21

28 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Carlos Dias She Changes Praça de Cidade do Salvador 4100 Porto is home to artist Janet Echelman's 'She Changes', a 160-foot-tall waterfront netted wind sculpture suspended above a 3-lane highway roundabout, which received the IFAI International Achievement Award and the Public Art Network's Year in Review Award It is a monumental, red and white, membrane-like sculpture at the Praca Cidade San Salvador in the town of Matosinhos along the shoreline outside of Porto Through her art, Janet Echelman reshapes urban airspace with monumental public sculptures that respond to environmental forces including wind, water, and sunlight "I am a sculptor who shapes urban space I prefer the immediacy and challenge of transforming sites that are either unnoticed infrastructure that have faded from public memory, or iconic landmarks that are so overexposed they become habitual background" photo: Carlos Dias 2005 Artist Janet Echelman MI_MOA 24/7 28

29 photo: Frans Drewniak photo: Frans Drewniak Can Lis Carrer de Sa Mitja Lluna Portopetro Spain Looking in Portopetro on the island of Mallorca for an ideal refuge during his holidays, Utzon built Can Lis in 1972, set among myrtle and pine trees, with an extraordinary view to the sea Integrating with the colours in the landscape, the main building material is a hard local limestone, called marés stone, which varies from gold to pink in colour The original concept for the house was the same as for the one that Utzon had intended to build in Sydney; a sequence of pavilions linked by a wall, and arranged so as to respond to the various functions within the dwelling In 1994, Utzon felt obliged to move from his house, which had turned into a place of pilgrimage for architects He built another house, Can Feliz, also in Mallorca, but this time its location is kept a total secret (text from website Stories of Houses) photo: Frans Drewniak Public access unknown! 1972 Jørn Utzon Victor 29

33 photo: Sergio Vico photo: Sergio Vico Bar in the Caves of Porto Cristo Crta Manacor - Porto Cristo km 11, Porto Cristo Spain The great natural entrance to the Caves of Hams in Mallorca houses a lush botanic garden It is in this entrance that the bar is situated and made up of a piece of backlit glass of 15 metres in length The counter of the bar, the most important element of the project, is fitted into a concrete cavity made up of straight lines, designed to contrast with the organic forms of the cave and can be closed under a transparent cover The bar is built of glass, a material which is the opposite of the heaviness and opaqueness of rock, and it stands out from its surroundings thanks to the fact that it is backlit, which also aids any disorientated visitors to find their way to it At night, the light which is given out by the bar, aided by the indirect lighting which is fitted around the rocks of the cave, is enough to illuminate the whole space of the entrance photo: Sergio Vico Floor area/size m², Interior architect A2 arquitectos Cristian Cuevas dels Hams From April until October: 10:00 am - 18:00 pm From November until March: 10:00 am - 17:00 pm 33
