2 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Education Center of Antas Rua Estádio Porto The spatial and architectural design of the building of the new Antas Education Center were formalized in several volumes, each containing part of the program in accordance with principles of internal organization, functionality, form and image, given the type of building and its specificity The intension was to formalize and realize the program provided through a drawing of building capable of being fragmented into several bodies interconnected with exterior spaces, which create diverse environments It?s a building consisting of several bodies expressed by a?simple architecture? that will build a close relationship with the exterior spaces It was intended to create in the spaces between the various bodies the visual relationship between interior and exterior reducing relations with the urban surroundings 2010 Atelier Veloso Arquitectos Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 2

3 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Placa de Lisboa R das Carmelitas Porto Portuguese studio Balonas and Menano s have created the "Praca de Lisboa" in Porto, The project was completed as an effort to improve an area in decline in the middle of Porto and creates a space for community and livelihood The structure includes three levels, with its top-most level consisting of a green roof planted with olive trees referencing the "Porta do Oliva" The middle level is dedicated to commercial use, and the ground level provides room for a refined parking lot and pedestrian spaces 2014 Balonas and Menano s Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 3

5 photo: Fernando Guerra photo: Fernando Guerra Gosho Restaurant Avenida da Boavista Porto Gosho Restaurant ('Imperial Palace') is located in the food court of a 5-star hotel The project contains several specific areas for the several types of Japanese food that the restaurant serves, with a total capacity of 101 seats The atmosphere of the restaurant cherishes 'being' in public, through different themes Besides evoking traditional Japanese architecture through a crude and strong presence of the materials, the design creates theatricality with two entrance tunnels and a raised arrival, underlines with white paint the amusing and seemingly irrational posture of the existing structure and nourishes a certain mystery by dissolving the space limits with a permeable curtain, a translucent screen and dark periphery walls (text from architect's website) photo: Fernando Guerra 2007 anc arquitectos Pedro_Loureiro 5

6 Water Pavilion Estrada da Circunvalação Porto This pavilion was built to be part of the Expo 1998 in Lisbon It was rebuilt in Porto at the city park The shape of the building stands like if it were levitating from the ground, coming out of a surface of water It's structure is entirely made out of wood 1998, Urban planner Alexandre Burmester José Carlos Gonçalves Águas do Porto By the city park is easy to reach by foot By car/bus there's an entrance at the "Estrada da Circunvalação" 6

7 Bom Sucesso Market Rua de Caldas Xavier 4150 Porto This building was one of the first buildings to be built in this zone In 1951 the works begin to give shape to this project Its structure of reinforced concrete is made out of pre-casted beams disposed in a radial shape The way the entry of light is designed and works in the interior is absolutely incredible and shows a great sensibility in this subject Even after more than 50 years of use, this building remains almost as good as new All the spatial richness is still present and as a market it has a rich social life photo: Carlos Dias 1952 ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal do Porto From around 700h till 1700h Right next to the square where there is "Casa da Música" It's less than five minute walk from the metro station 7

8 photo: Carlos Dias Trindade Subway Station Rua de Camões 4000 Porto Built to be the central subway station, "Trindade" has an interface that connects 2 subway lines resulting in a big subway station with commercial spaces The materialization of the architecture is almost the space as all the other subway stations in the center of Porto and it reflects a lot of the northern portuguese way of building White walls, granite floors, ceramic tiles, rough granite stone walls, all of these elements appear in the tradicional constructions and were recreated to fit the contemporary design resulting in some very interesting spaces 2002 Eduardo Souto de Moura Metro do Porto from 600h - 100h but it depends of the months By the subway just get to "Trindade" subway station In the heart of the old city right beside the Trindade Church and the city hall 8

9 photo: Luís Ferreira Alves Guindais Funicular Av de Gustavo Eiffel 4000 Porto The Funicular connects the Douro river bank to the high town at the Batalha quarter, through the Guindais slope It is the new way that grasps itself to firm stone and ends in a tower facing the river, such as the old wall which leans on a big rock At both edges of this trajectory there are two stations, each one looking for the adequate relation to each part of the town and its immediate environment areas Both stations are entirely built of white concrete, the most brilliant colourgrade in the North: in the subterraneous station at the mountain in order to better reflect the light entering through the vertical accesses and skylights; in the station at the valley, to make reference to the clear plans of the slope The water which runs along the slope and the line of the valley formed by the rails, controlled by little dams that decrease and sustain its speed, falls freely as a cascade in the interior of the station, being then conducted to the river 2003, Urban planner Adalberto Dias Porto Metro do Porto June - September: Sunday to Wednesday - 08h00-22h00 Thursday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 October - May: Sunday to Thursday - 08h00-20h00 Friday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 Right next to the famous bridge Luíz I in the heart of the medieval city 9

10 Almeida Garrett Library Rua de Entre Quintas Porto This building has two great functions: Public Library and a new exposition hall There is also an auditorium for 200 people determined to conferences, films projection and other shows Its location, between the street "Entrequintas" and the gardens of the crystal palace has an intense presence with the nature giving it a peaceful environment to build a library With a great attention to details, the main façade is covered with pine wood to create a shield from the sun to the exposition rooms The library has to floors with a big opening that connects visually the two levels 2001 José Manuel Soares Câmara Municipal do Porto Monday: Tuesday-Saturday: bus: 601, 302, 200, 207, 201, 501, 601, ZM 10

11 Artists Workshop rua da lada 4050 Porto The building has 4 ateliers for young artists Its location, right next to the river "Douro" has a wonderful view of the "D Luiz I" Bridge, the river and the south coast of the city of "Gaia" This project integrates a system of platforms and granite walls in stories and stairs that connects the building to the street at the ground level The great sensibility and beautifulness of the urban tissue and it's great presence in the site conducted to the option of creating a building that is discreet The object consists in an association of two planes in "sandwich", with glass walls over a platform Project is not public! 1996 Virgínio Moutinho Young Artists Right next to the main Bridge in Porto "D Luiz I" and it stands on the top of the tunnel that gives access to the old city Several Buses to get there and with the "Funicular dos Guindais", the elevator 11

13 Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House Rua de Viana de Lima 4150 Porto The Cinema House represents a significant change in the formal expression of Eduardo Souto de Moura A change of style that approaches this work to the formal expression of the architecture of Siza Vieira This building pretends to be similar to the surrounding houses, having some distortions to fit better on the plot The overall image resembles to the lens of the camera, with dynamic eyes like the insects, searching for the views to the see in between the buildings 1998, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Eduardo Souto de Moura Câmara Municipal do Porto Right now [November 2007] it's on restoration because it was left abandoned since it was finished By bus (number 78) on the "Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa" till "Praça do Império" and after that by foot following the street "Rua de Bartolomeu Velho" 13

15 Casa das Artes Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics 1981, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Secretaria de Estado da Cultura Take a bus from the city center that passes on the street "Rua do Campo Alegre", or at the "Avenida da Boavista" From there it's easy to reach it by foot 15

16 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Café do Cais Cais Estiva Porto This café is situated along the river Douro in the old city centre It is a simple glazed pavilion, integrated into the lively quayside surroundings When all the glass doors on the south side are opened, the café is transformed into a large, covered open-air terrace The only solid boxes are the two service-zones inside, one for the bar, and the other for sanitary services The pavilion seems to hover above the ground on a small raised platform The terrace has an amazing canopy, resembling the sails of the ships passing by 2000 Cristina Guedes + Francisco Vieira de Campos Animafoz Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst If you re in Praca da Ribeira, walk to the river, then turn right it is the glass building on your left, right on the river edge 16
