2 Sports Arena Rua de Pevidal 4420 Gondomar One of the recent projects from the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira This Sports Arena is a big complex with two sports pavilions Very influenced by Louis Khan's platonic works and with some Oscar Niemeyer's sensuality, this work is all made out of concrete and steel as the exterior façades are covered with bricks 2007 Câmara Municipal de Gondomar Joao_Sousa Depending if there is an event By car: From Porto take the highway IC29 to Gondomar and take the exit to the centre of Gondomar It's right beside the exit 2

3 Transparent Building Esplanada do Rio de Janeiro Porto Being part of an urban plan to redesign the westend seafront of the city park, this building serves a shopping centre and leisure centre in combination with seaside activities The entire building is constructed in white concrete and the façade is made out of pre-fabricated white concrete slabs The interior offers some interesting spaces that overview the atlantic ocean, creating a lot of shades and light effects on the afternoon 2002, Urban planner Manuel de Solà-Morales Polis-Porto Joao_Sousa Right at the end of "Avenida da Boavista" on the seafront at the westend of the city park By bus it's the stop "Castelo do Queijo" 3

4 photo: Luca Silenzi photo: Luca Silenzi Food Container Remixed Piazzale Matteotti Porto Sant'Elpidio Italy From box to hypercube This brand new commercial building (surface: 2500 m2) is a part of a wider urban district planned from Spacelab ure since 2006 in the city of Porto Sant`Elpidio - middle Italy, in the course of completion The client brief: maximum formal impact in the limits of precast construction and basic tipology (medium-commercial function) Spacelab intended this limits as an occasion to conduct the modular precast construction to new formal results Mixing two structural systems (precast concrete grid+steel truss), the box resulting from urban plan parameters (maximum surface and height) is complicated in the entrance side by a prismatic intrusion in the original volume, distinguished by using glass and other translucent materials in comparison to other opaque fronts The other sides are characterized using precast custom-made concrete envelope, deniing modules by a continue abstract texture visually connecting each panel to the contiguous photo: Luca Silenzi Floor area/size m², Urban planner Contractor Structural engineer Spacelab s GIL Costruzion Spacelab s Spacelab 4

10 Casa das Artes Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics 1981, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Secretaria de Estado da Cultura Take a bus from the city center that passes on the street "Rua do Campo Alegre", or at the "Avenida da Boavista" From there it's easy to reach it by foot 10

11 Bouça Housing Complex Rua Melo II Porto This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting In 1977 there where only two blocks completed Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces 2004, Urban planner SAAL Joao_Sousa Only the public spaces are public, it's a housing complex Take the subway in Porto till the station "Lapa" it's right there! 11

12 Housing Block Rua do Teatro Porto This housing block situated on the western part of Porto, in front of the Atlantic ocean is a conceptual reinvention of the traditional urban houses of the XVIII century Instead of a stone structure, here the structure is in steel but is completely visible and separated from the other elements But at the same time there are traditional materials that were used on the façades, transposing the modern architecture into a more site related project Project is not public! 1995, Interior architect, Urban planner Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa On the western part of Porto called "Foz" it's easy to reach From the avenue "Avenida do Brasil" that follows the coast line 12

13 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Carlos Dias She Changes Praça de Cidade do Salvador 4100 Porto is home to artist Janet Echelman's 'She Changes', a 160-foot-tall waterfront netted wind sculpture suspended above a 3-lane highway roundabout, which received the IFAI International Achievement Award and the Public Art Network's Year in Review Award It is a monumental, red and white, membrane-like sculpture at the Praca Cidade San Salvador in the town of Matosinhos along the shoreline outside of Porto Through her art, Janet Echelman reshapes urban airspace with monumental public sculptures that respond to environmental forces including wind, water, and sunlight "I am a sculptor who shapes urban space I prefer the immediacy and challenge of transforming sites that are either unnoticed infrastructure that have faded from public memory, or iconic landmarks that are so overexposed they become habitual background" photo: Carlos Dias 2005 Artist Janet Echelman MI_MOA 24/7 13

15 photo: Nelson Garrido photo: Nelson Garrido Garden Intervention Rua da Igreja de Cedofeita Porto This project entails the intervention in the garden of a 1870 house in Porto It is based on the premises of a pre-existing wood deck which covers about one third of the garden area, and the need to create a shelter for various mobile garden components The architect created a wall that fits this deck, giving it the character of a resting area, while allowing the visual relationship between building and garden to be enhanced This structural wall is the visible side of the new shelter, that extends to the plot's limit wall Its design intends to visually play with the actual deck, by doubling the stereotomy of the flooring The structure is built with treated pine, also used on the wall cladding The roof is in zinc panel Project is not public! 16 photo: Carlos Dias Casa Armanda Passos Av do Mal Gomes da Costa 4150 Porto Amidst horizontal and vertical planes conditioned by the contours of the terrain, memories of Zen gardens and fire signs, the Armanda Passos house has gently risen Designed to be lived in at all hours of the day, when light seeks out shade, and shade opens itself to the light, the house-atelier, commissioned by painter Armanda Passos from the most international name in Portuguese architecture, allows the complicity naturally created by the architect with his work to transpire at each step This is the second dwelling designed by Siza in Porto The first was built in the 1960 s on the Avenida dos Combatentes photo: Carlos Dias Project is not public! 2005 Armanda Passos MI_MOA 16

17 photo: Traço Alternativo photo: Traço Alternativo Urban Renewal Aliados Avenue Avenida dos Aliados Porto The Project for the Avenida dos Aliados surges from the need to build, in that place, three metro stations that are practically contiguous: São Bento, Aliados and Trindade The intervention opted for the reformulation of the existing vegetation, it privileged the thick arboreal but freed the ground from flower beds and other obstacles which restricted the use of the Avenue located in the heart of the city as a large public space, as it happens in countless cities, responding to a use that was, in fact, already in practice, although in precarious conditions The project redesigned the urban furniture but re-used the old existing street lamps On the upper side of the Avenue, near the City Hall, a water mirror was built, surrounded by benches, chairs and trees 2005 Main designer, Eduardo Souto de Moura uralguides photo: Traço Alternativo 17

18 Bom Sucesso Market Rua de Caldas Xavier 4150 Porto This building was one of the first buildings to be built in this zone In 1951 the works begin to give shape to this project Its structure of reinforced concrete is made out of pre-casted beams disposed in a radial shape The way the entry of light is designed and works in the interior is absolutely incredible and shows a great sensibility in this subject Even after more than 50 years of use, this building remains almost as good as new All the spatial richness is still present and as a market it has a rich social life photo: Carlos Dias 1952 ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa From around 700h till 1700h Right next to the square where there is "Casa da Música" It's less than five minute walk from the metro station 18
