3 photo: José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira photo: José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira Porto Cenário Bar R do Monchique Porto This project concerns the conversion of a small 50m2 restaurant into a Lounge Bar, at the riverside front in Porto, Massarelos Plastered stucco boards were placed around the walls, hanging over a contrasting dark wooden floor The customer s area was separated from the services and supporting spaces such as the sanitary, the kitchen and the DJ cabin, installed in half of the former restaurant kitchen After all, the DJ is the new coking master over here These fleshy spaces got moulded in orange juicy colours, contrasting with the white/beige painted main room The relation with the beautiful outside landscape was improved by emphasising the presence of the 4 existing windows as absences in the walls, inviting for contemplation The lighting as well the furniture was carefully chosen, out of vintage stores, in order to fulfil the client s will of spending few and creating an atmosphere that could be cosy, slightly minimalistic and sophisticated at the same time photo: José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira Floor area/size m² Main designer, Graphic designer Structural engineer José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira Paulo Costa Ricardo Sapage Manuel Sousa Vieira, Luz e Som Agostinho Veloso de Brito Jose_Carlos_Nunes_de_Oliveira_Arc hitect 3

9 Bouça Housing Complex Rua Melo II Porto This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting In 1977 there where only two blocks completed Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces 2004, Urban planner Alvaro Siza Vieira SAAL Joao_Sousa Only the public spaces are public, it's a housing complex Take the subway in Porto till the station "Lapa" it's right there! 9

10 Casa das Artes Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics 1981, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Secretaria de Estado da Cultura Take a bus from the city center that passes on the street "Rua do Campo Alegre", or at the "Avenida da Boavista" From there it's easy to reach it by foot 10

11 Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House Rua de Viana de Lima 4150 Porto The Cinema House represents a significant change in the formal expression of Eduardo Souto de Moura A change of style that approaches this work to the formal expression of the architecture of Siza Vieira This building pretends to be similar to the surrounding houses, having some distortions to fit better on the plot The overall image resembles to the lens of the camera, with dynamic eyes like the insects, searching for the views to the see in between the buildings 1998, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Câmara Municipal do Porto Right now [November 2007] it's on restoration because it was left abandoned since it was finished By bus (number 78) on the "Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa" till "Praça do Império" and after that by foot following the street "Rua de Bartolomeu Velho" 11

12 Cinema Batalha Praça da Batalha Porto Situated in the heart of the city of Porto, the proposal of Artur Andrade continues his development of the expressionist line with a curve façade that creates movement and great dynamics in tension with the glass façade that defines the corner of the square in a futuristic style It was a very polemic building when constructed (1946) because of the fascist regime Today it works as a lounge bar, a restaurant and a cinema/theatre 1946 Artur Andrade Câmara Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa Right in the centre of the city of Porto Metro stations "Bolhão" or "São Bento" and several buses pass by there Easy to get there 12

14 Artists Workshop rua da lada 4050 Porto The building has 4 ateliers for young artists Its location, right next to the river "Douro" has a wonderful view of the "D Luiz I" Bridge, the river and the south coast of the city of "Gaia" This project integrates a system of platforms and granite walls in stories and stairs that connects the building to the street at the ground level The great sensibility and beautifulness of the urban tissue and it's great presence in the site conducted to the option of creating a building that is discreet The object consists in an association of two planes in "sandwich", with glass walls over a platform Project is not public! 1996 Virgínio Moutinho Young Artists Joao_Sousa Right next to the main Bridge in Porto "D Luiz I" and it stands on the top of the tunnel that gives access to the old city Several Buses to get there and with the "Funicular dos Guindais", the elevator 14

15 Almeida Garrett Library Rua de Entre Quintas Porto This building has two great functions: Public Library and a new exposition hall There is also an auditorium for 200 people determined to conferences, films projection and other shows Its location, between the street "Entrequintas" and the gardens of the crystal palace has an intense presence with the nature giving it a peaceful environment to build a library With a great attention to details, the main façade is covered with pine wood to create a shield from the sun to the exposition rooms The library has to floors with a big opening that connects visually the two levels 2001 José Manuel Soares Câmara Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa Monday: Tuesday-Saturday: bus: 601, 302, 200, 207, 201, 501, 601, ZM 15

16 Children Library Rua de Entre Quintas 4050 Porto This small pavilion located between the trees in the gardens of the Crystal Palace has two levels with a double height vestibule The library appears as an "objet trouvé" in the nature, participating in this spontaneous environment The volume resembles an old train wagon, lifted slightly off the ground turning it into a light and welcoming space The used materials were chosen according to the environment, following the textures and colours of the nature The structure and wall panels are made out of wood and the windows are sheets of transparent polycarbonate located at the height of the children with awesome views to the gardens It's a building that fits perfectly in this natural environment 1997 Paula Santos Câmar Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa Monday: Tuesday-Saturday: It's located in the gardens of the Crystal Palace You need to search and follow the signs "Biblioteca Infantil" to reach it 16

17 Housing Block Rua do Teatro Porto This housing block situated on the western part of Porto, in front of the Atlantic ocean is a conceptual reinvention of the traditional urban houses of the XVIII century Instead of a stone structure, here the structure is in steel but is completely visible and separated from the other elements But at the same time there are traditional materials that were used on the façades, transposing the modern architecture into a more site related project Project is not public! 1995, Interior architect, Urban planner Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa On the western part of Porto called "Foz" it's easy to reach From the avenue "Avenida do Brasil" that follows the coast line 17

18 photo: Luís Ferreira Alves Guindais Funicular Av de Gustavo Eiffel 4000 Porto The Funicular connects the Douro river bank to the high town at the Batalha quarter, through the Guindais slope It is the new way that grasps itself to firm stone and ends in a tower facing the river, such as the old wall which leans on a big rock At both edges of this trajectory there are two stations, each one looking for the adequate relation to each part of the town and its immediate environment areas Both stations are entirely built of white concrete, the most brilliant colourgrade in the North: in the subterraneous station at the mountain in order to better reflect the light entering through the vertical accesses and skylights; in the station at the valley, to make reference to the clear plans of the slope The water which runs along the slope and the line of the valley formed by the rails, controlled by little dams that decrease and sustain its speed, falls freely as a cascade in the interior of the station, being then conducted to the river 2003, Urban planner Adalberto Dias Porto Metro do Porto Joao_Sousa June - September: Sunday to Wednesday - 08h00-22h00 Thursday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 October - May: Sunday to Thursday - 08h00-20h00 Friday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 Right next to the famous bridge Luíz I in the heart of the medieval city 18

19 photo: Carlos Dias Trindade Subway Station Rua de Camões 4000 Porto Built to be the central subway station, "Trindade" has an interface that connects 2 subway lines resulting in a big subway station with commercial spaces The materialization of the architecture is almost the space as all the other subway stations in the center of Porto and it reflects a lot of the northern portuguese way of building White walls, granite floors, ceramic tiles, rough granite stone walls, all of these elements appear in the tradicional constructions and were recreated to fit the contemporary design resulting in some very interesting spaces 2002 Eduardo Souto de Moura Metro do Porto Joao_Sousa from 600h - 100h but it depends of the months By the subway just get to "Trindade" subway station In the heart of the old city right beside the Trindade Church and the city hall 19

20 Housing Complex Rua Orfeão do Porto 4150 Porto Built in white reinforced concrete this housing complex is formed by two separate blocks connected by the mainly vertical access with the lift and the staircase All the floors are composed by an external gallery that connects all the appartments allowing them to face the great views of the sea and to receive good sunlight With a very simple and contemporary language this complex establishes new ways of drawing the housing complex in a simple and elegant manner Project is not public! 2007 Adalberto Dias Joao_Sousa Located on the western part of the city, right beside the "ring", it's easy to reach if you have the "Ipanema Park Hotel" as a reference point 20

21 Burgo Tower Avenida da Boavista Porto This office complex is located in the Avenida da Boavista, the biggest straight line avenue in that extends from "Casa da Música" till the Sea in West This complex opens a large square between the two buildings, one horizontal and the other vertical The square is occupied by a big sculpture by the Porto architect/sculptor Nadir de Afonso The buildings were drawn with very simple shapes, following the influences of Mies and the Chicago buildings The main interest about the building is its façade Its skin is composed out of a single module that wraps all the volumes That module was studied so it could fit on 2 different ways creating a glass façade and an opaque façade Public access unknown! 22 Transparent Building Esplanada do Rio de Janeiro Porto Being part of an urban plan to redesign the westend seafront of the city park, this building serves a shopping centre and leisure centre in combination with seaside activities The entire building is constructed in white concrete and the façade is made out of pre-fabricated white concrete slabs The interior offers some interesting spaces that overview the atlantic ocean, creating a lot of shades and light effects on the afternoon 2002, Urban planner Manuel de Solà-Morales Polis-Porto Joao_Sousa Right at the end of "Avenida da Boavista" on the seafront at the westend of the city park By bus it's the stop "Castelo do Queijo" 22

23 Casa de Serralves Rua de Serralves 4050 Porto Old property of Count of Vizela, the gardens of Serralves are an amazing example of the French style gardens together with the romantic influenced gardens and more recently with the Museum of Contemporary Art beautifully designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira The House of Serralves was the main house of this whole property and began its construction in 1925 to be finished only in 1944 Designed by the Porto based architect José Marques da Silva, author of numerous beautiful beaux-arts buildings in Porto (Central Station, Aliados Avenue, ) This House is a great example of the Art-Déco style of the early 20th century in Europe Designed with a great simplicity and minimalism, the interiors have an enormous attention to the details and the natural light 1944, Artist José Marques da Silva Conde de Vizela Joao_Sousa It depends of the schedule of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves Mondays is closed The way to get access to the house is by entering the Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves (by Siza Vieira) and to buy the ticket to the museum exhibition and the gardens The house is located at the gardens 23

24 Bom Sucesso Market Rua de Caldas Xavier 4150 Porto This building was one of the first buildings to be built in this zone In 1951 the works begin to give shape to this project Its structure of reinforced concrete is made out of pre-casted beams disposed in a radial shape The way the entry of light is designed and works in the interior is absolutely incredible and shows a great sensibility in this subject Even after more than 50 years of use, this building remains almost as good as new All the spatial richness is still present and as a market it has a rich social life photo: Carlos Dias 1952 ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa From around 700h till 1700h Right next to the square where there is "Casa da Música" It's less than five minute walk from the metro station 24

26 Water Pavilion Estrada da Circunvalação Porto This pavilion was built to be part of the Expo 1998 in Lisbon It was rebuilt in Porto at the city park The shape of the building stands like if it were levitating from the ground, coming out of a surface of water It's structure is entirely made out of wood 1998, Urban planner Infrastructure consultant Alexandre Burmester José Carlos Gonçalves Águas do Porto Joao_Sousa By the city park is easy to reach by foot By car/bus there's an entrance at the "Estrada da Circunvalação" 26

27 photo: FG+SG photo: FG+SG Oporto Blood Bank Rua do Bolama Porto The O Porto Blood Bank is built on a detached plot with an irregular polygon in the heart of a city block The building-as-line runs through the polygon s different directions searching its geometry The Blood bank supports all activities of regional blood collection and analysis as well as its partition in 3 components (erythrocytes, plasma and platelets) These components are later to be distributed to hospitals and pharmaceutical industries This typology is new and hardly tested It has a great complexity due to permanent risk of blood contamination Continuous scientific and technological developments force permanent alterations It is therefore a building with an unstable interior, which will undergo frequent metamorphosis throughout its life The building program is a linear sequential process (of blood disassembly) It suggests to be more adequate a low and fluid construction rather than a high building, as pointed out by the neighbouring housing buildings (5 and 6 levels) photo: FG+SG Floor area/size m² ARX Arquitectos Instituto Português do Sangue ARX_ During the week: 830 to 1900h Saturday: 830 to 1300h 27

28 Commercial Building in Boavista Avenida da Boavista 4050 Porto The building is designed like a succession of boxes disposed randomly over a platform From the traditional platform-like style building that Souto Moura uses to make, now he rethinks the concept of the box-like architecture, transforming it into a composition of boxes that generate an urban façade over the avenue 2008, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Depending of the stores The building is located in the Avenida da Boavista right in front of the east entry to the city park There are several Buses going down that avenue 28

29 photo: Fernando Guerra photo: Fernando Guerra Gosho Restaurant Avenida da Boavista Porto Gosho Restaurant ('Imperial Palace') is located in the food court of a 5-star hotel The project contains several specific areas for the several types of Japanese food that the restaurant serves, with a total capacity of 101 seats The atmosphere of the restaurant cherishes 'being' in public, through different themes Besides evoking traditional Japanese architecture through a crude and strong presence of the materials, the design creates theatricality with two entrance tunnels and a raised arrival, underlines with white paint the amusing and seemingly irrational posture of the existing structure and nourishes a certain mystery by dissolving the space limits with a permeable curtain, a translucent screen and dark periphery walls (text from architect's website) photo: Fernando Guerra 2007 anc arquitectos Pedro_Loureiro 29
