6 photo: Michiel van Loon photo: Michiel van Loon Spittelau District Heating Plant Spittelauer Lände 1090 Vienna Vienna has the persistence of its former mayor Helmut Zilk to thank for Hundertwasser having taken on the task of redesigning the exterior of the Spittelau District Heating Plant Originally Hundertwasser had opposed the idea upon consulting his friend, environmentalist Bernd Lötsch, as he had fundamental objections to a garbage-incinerating plant as long as all possibilities for avoiding garbage were not exhausted When it was promised that the plant would be equipped with the most modern emission-purification technology, and that apartments would be heated whose emissions would otherwise be a further source of pollution, Hundertwasser agreed to do the design The plain factory building was turned into a spectacular and unique work of art, and is an example of harmonic symbiosis between technology, ecology and art (text from Kunst Haus Wien) Project is not public! 1992, Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser Michiel_van_Loon photo: Michiel van Loon 6

8 photo: Lucian Ilica Hundertwasserhaus Kegelgasse Vienna The Hundertwasserhaus is an apartment complex in Vienna,, designed by n artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser It was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan Hundertwasser was not paid, stating that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from being erected The house features a very organic design, with its uneven floors and plentiful flora Its roof is covered in grass and trees are grown from within, their limbs extending from the windows There are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes There are also artificial trees; the columns that can be seen reminded Hundertwasser of trees The windows and mosaic tiles are laid out not in a grid, but in a more playful organic way, with crooked angles Project is not public! m² Main designer, Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser Joseph Krawina Peter Pelikan Robin photo: Evgenia Kononova The Hundertwasserhaus is walking distance from the Wien Mitte train station and Landstraße subway station which is served by lines U3 and U4 8

10 photo: Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten Vertically Landscaped Housing Hardtmuthgasse 68 A-1100 Vienna On a corner plot in Vienna, Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten built a compact block of 17 apartments Balancing the high density of the project are the spacious communal amenities on the ground floor (workshop, hobby room, children?s room), the public roof garden and the private?gardens? in front of every living room In order to bring coherence to the large façade areas, including the curved soffits of the loggias, the architects opted for a corrugated aluminium sheeting that could be applied without seams The result is powerful and homogeneous But it?s an unconventional choice of material for a residential project where brick, wood or concrete tend to be the preferred option That surprise effect is precisely what the architects were aiming for In choosing corrugated aluminium they were also setting themselves the challenge of showing that a material they claim usually evokes negative associations can deliver an elegant building with a congenial atmosphere Project is not public! m² Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten Genossenschaft Neues Leben Kirsten_Hannema photo: Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten 10

13 photo: DO & CO photo: DO & CO DO & CO hotel Stephansplatz Vienna DO & CO started as Attila Dogudan s Viennese empire of restaurants and luxury catering, but now includes an architecturally adventurous and sybaritic hotel experience in downtown Vienna Located across from St Stephen s Cathedral, the Haas Haus building was designed by Pritzker-prize winner Hans Hollein; later, in an unusual move, it was retrofitted to its present incarnation by Hollein himself Four floors of the steel-and-glass building have been transformed into 43 unique cone-shaped guest rooms offering majestic views of Stephansplatz, Graben and the Kärtnerstrasse Extravagant accommodations feature teak woodwork and stone integrated into a futuristic vision of modern design Bathrooms offer two-square-meter showers, flat-screen televisions and one suite has private fitness equipment (Design hotels) Project is public! 14 Students Guest House at the Viennese University Molkereistrasse 1 A-1020 Vienna This hall of residence is added to an existing block The insertion of student residences in consolidated fabrics of cities, where housing costs hinder this group of the population from easily finding housing, promotes the rejuvenation of these kinds of neighbourhoods while bringing up the residential density This students guest house will be used to host 278 Erasmus students It is the first Viennese 'Passiv house' The façade design is based on a single window type bringing natural daylight into the students apartments The technical infrastructure of the building consists of a mechanical ventilation system, which is based on geothermics and heat recovery photo: Eduard Hueber Project is not public! m² baumschlager & eberle MIGRA GesmbH, OeAD aplust 14

19 photo: Markus Kaiser photo: Markus Kaiser Ambulance Station Simmering Kaiser-Eberdorferstraße Vienna The Ambulance Station is set on Kaiser-Eberdorferstraße and responsible for the whole 11th district in Vienna It officially opened in May 2013 The complex combines two different functional areas, the garage and the staff rooms Even though they are different spheres, they are connected by the roof which embraces the whole building It is especially designed to keep ways and also response times as short as possible The distance from every single room in the building to the next emergency exit, which is the main entry, has a maximum length of 40 meter The ambulance is set in the entry hall and directly connected to the station management The restrooms for the team are set on the ground floor, which is directly connected to the green zones surrounding the back of the building This enables people to go outside and enjoy the fresh air in the garden It is an additional relaxing space and keeps the temperatures in and around the building on a comfortable level, even in summer photo: Markus Kaiser Project is public! 21 photo: Michiel van Loon Schullin Jewelry Shop Kohlmarkt Vienna In this jewelry shop in Vienna, ornament is both message and medium Hans Hollein has taken the basic shell of a 19th-century building, corrected it slightly, and painted it white He then superimposed a clearly differentiated layer of elements not only functional but fantastic and luxurious Paradoxically for a jewelry shop (and quite intentionally), he has used materials in flagrant disregard of their real value: some are precious and some are common, but all, glowing or glittering, tease the visitor with an impression of wealth and mystery Real marble is used in the patterned floor, but in the black-curtained backworld of the safe, under a mock skylight, plastic laminate pretends to be marble Real bronze is used as an arch/guillotine over the entrance, but a headless 'bronzed' African bust is in fact plastic (text from 'Ornament is no crime', Progressive ure/ny) Public access unknown! 1974 Hans Hollein Herbert Schullin Michiel_van_Loon photo: Michiel van Loon 21

22 photo: Markus Kaiser photo: Markus Kaiser Comida Welthandelsplatz Vienna The cafeteria and the restaurant Comida y Pan and Comida y Luz are set in the "Executive Building", which was designed by the Spanish architects NOMAD As part of the selection procedure we were commissioned by the Comida-Crew to develop and create a project idea When this happened, the architecture of the building was already completed and the rooms for the cafeteria and the restaurant were appointed Because of that the first thing we did was to focus on the space dedication again So the flat roof on the 6th floor became a smoking terrace and the WC facilities planned on the Ground Floor became a private room Previous door frames were used as bottle racks, which separate the private booth space from the rest of the cafeteria and still maintain a connection by being mostly transparent It was also important to place user-specific logistics such as the kitchen and the bar as well as refrigerators and storerooms photo: Markus Kaiser Project is public! 23 photo: Severin Wurnig photo: Severin Wurnig Rochus1090 Liechtensteinstraße Vienna A special element of the building is the 1913 built and still existing sun garden Rather than putting it down because of his ongoing decrepitude we decided to keep and rehabilitate it By opening the portals to ceiling-high windows, the sun garden now connects not only inner- and outer-space but also the different levels of the building The layout of the guest room is u-shaped around the building core This evoked the idea of a visually dematerialization while using dark coatings and mirrors In contrast, the bars and the four fireplaces are particularly emphasized in the room with gold coating of the surfaces and staged The guest room on the mezzanine floor does not only offer a smoking and a non smoking area, it is also set 2,40 meter above the road By removing the parapets and putting in windows that attach the floor to the ceiling, the room is filled with light and air and opens it up towards the street space photo: Severin Wurnig Project is public! 2012 Soehne & Partner Architekten SoehneParnter 23

25 photo: Vera Subkus photo: Vera Subkus Conversion of the Palais Rasumofsky Rasumofskygasse Vienna The palais was built for Andrei Kirillowitsch Duke Rasumofsky, the former Russian ambassador under Czar Alexander during the time of the Viennese Congress of 1806 As a patron of Beethoven and the flourishing art movement, Duke Rasumofsky selected Belgian architect Louis Montoyer to create the ensemble of three buildings with a floor area comprising over 11000m2 surrounding a central park located in central Vienna Alois the 2nd, Duke of Liechtenstein, resided in the palais from which later became state owned shortly thereafter before being acquired recently by two significant contemporary art collectors who commissioned the conversion into an art foundation and private residence The central building was damaged during World War II and poorly repaired and maintained during the post-war period leading to significant problems photo: Vera Subkus Project is not public! m² Baar-Baarenfels Architekten Arch_Lorenzo_Priori 25
