3 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Gasometer City Guglgasse Vienna These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as part of the gasworks at Simmering After they were closed down, the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments, shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001 When they were built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe They are listed by the country s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of industrial architecture The renovation goal was to reuse the external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of demolition waste The gigantic size of this construction project is illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers Floor area/size m² Main designer, Client Coop Himmelb(l)au Jean Nouvel Manfred Wedhorn Wilhelm Holzbauer City of Vienna Bjorn_Utpott photo: Dirk Verwoerd There are very different opening hours for different functions, like the cinema, shopping malls, offices to see it all, visit From Westbahnhof take U-bahn U3 directly to the Gasometer, with direction Simmering (about 20 min) 3

4 photo: Lucian Ilica Hundertwasserhaus Kegelgasse Vienna The Hundertwasserhaus is an apartment complex in Vienna,, designed by n artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser It was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan Hundertwasser was not paid, stating that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from being erected The house features a very organic design, with its uneven floors and plentiful flora Its roof is covered in grass and trees are grown from within, their limbs extending from the windows There are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes There are also artificial trees; the columns that can be seen reminded Hundertwasser of trees The windows and mosaic tiles are laid out not in a grid, but in a more playful organic way, with crooked angles Project is not public! 6 photo: Michiel van Loon Wiener Postsparkasse Georg-Coch-Platz Vienna Representing Otto Wagner's first move away from Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism, the Wiener Postsparkasse (n Postal Savings Bank) is regarded as an important early work of modern architecture The building occupies an entire city block, next to the Ringstrasse boulevard The bank's façade obviously alludes to classicism Wagner's key idea was to celebrate modern materials by developing new forms The entire façade is covered with square marble plates These are attached to the main structure by aluminum rivets or bolts, forming a pattern Inside, the main hall is designed like an atrium, with a large glass skylight allowing natural light to enter the heart of the building at all times photo: Michiel van Loon Otto Wagner Michiel_van_Loon Monday - Friday: / Thursday:

7 photo: Michiel van Loon photo: Michiel van Loon Spittelau District Heating Plant Spittelauer Lände 1090 Vienna Vienna has the persistence of its former mayor Helmut Zilk to thank for Hundertwasser having taken on the task of redesigning the exterior of the Spittelau District Heating Plant Originally Hundertwasser had opposed the idea upon consulting his friend, environmentalist Bernd Lötsch, as he had fundamental objections to a garbage-incinerating plant as long as all possibilities for avoiding garbage were not exhausted When it was promised that the plant would be equipped with the most modern emission-purification technology, and that apartments would be heated whose emissions would otherwise be a further source of pollution, Hundertwasser agreed to do the design The plain factory building was turned into a spectacular and unique work of art, and is an example of harmonic symbiosis between technology, ecology and art (text from Kunst Haus Wien) Project is not public! 1992, Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser Michiel_van_Loon photo: Michiel van Loon 7

12 photo: Vera Subkus photo: Vera Subkus Conversion of the Palais Rasumofsky Rasumofskygasse Vienna The palais was built for Andrei Kirillowitsch Duke Rasumofsky, the former Russian ambassador under Czar Alexander during the time of the Viennese Congress of 1806 As a patron of Beethoven and the flourishing art movement, Duke Rasumofsky selected Belgian architect Louis Montoyer to create the ensemble of three buildings with a floor area comprising over 11000m2 surrounding a central park located in central Vienna Alois the 2nd, Duke of Liechtenstein, resided in the palais from which later became state owned shortly thereafter before being acquired recently by two significant contemporary art collectors who commissioned the conversion into an art foundation and private residence The central building was damaged during World War II and poorly repaired and maintained during the post-war period leading to significant problems photo: Vera Subkus Project is not public! 15 Leopold Museum Museumsplatz Vienna A block clad on all sides with white mussel limestone, 24 metres high and embedded 13 metres in the ground From a distance the single windows give the impression of a private house Only when closer to the building do you grasp that they are actually oversized in format and measure 22 by 38 metres In angled sunlight the block, initially apparently smooth, reveals differently structured surfaces that give the stony mass a curious transparency, the rooms behind seem to shimmer through the facade 2004 Ortner & Ortner Nazar 15

16 Otto Wagner Pavilion Karlsplatz Vienna Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station is a former station of the Viennese Stadtbahn The buildings above ground on Karlsplatz are a well-known example of Jugendstil architecture These buildings were included in The Vienna Secession, as they followed many of the artistic styles of that movement They were designed by Otto Wagner, adviser to the Transport Commission in Vienna,and Joseph Maria Olbrich and are, unlike the other Stadtbahn stations, made of a steel framework with marble slabs mounted on the exterior 1899 Main designer, Otto Wagner Joseph Maria Olbrich Nazar 16

17 MUMOK - Museum Moderner Kunst Museumsplatz Vienna A dark, closed block The curved roof is pulled far down at the corners; the entire building is enclosed in a 12-cm-thick shell made of basalt lava An outdoor flight of steps, 10 metres wide, leads to the entrance level that lies 4 metres higher than the level of the courtyard This entrance level is at the centre of the building in terms of height There are two main exhibition floors above it and two below; a further basement level is used as for depots and for the building services 2003 Ortner & Ortner Nazar 17
