3 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Gasometer City Guglgasse Vienna These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as part of the gasworks at Simmering After they were closed down, the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments, shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001 When they were built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe They are listed by the country s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of industrial architecture The renovation goal was to reuse the external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of demolition waste The gigantic size of this construction project is illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers Project is public! 4 photo: Lucian Ilica Hundertwasserhaus Kegelgasse Vienna The Hundertwasserhaus is an apartment complex in Vienna,, designed by n artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser It was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan Hundertwasser was not paid, stating that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from being erected The house features a very organic design, with its uneven floors and plentiful flora Its roof is covered in grass and trees are grown from within, their limbs extending from the windows There are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes There are also artificial trees; the columns that can be seen reminded Hundertwasser of trees The windows and mosaic tiles are laid out not in a grid, but in a more playful organic way, with crooked angles Project is not public! 5 Wiener Postsparkasse Georg-Coch-Platz Vienna Representing Otto Wagner's first move away from Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism, the Wiener Postsparkasse (n Postal Savings Bank) is regarded as an important early work of modern architecture The building occupies an entire city block, next to the Ringstrasse boulevard The bank's façade obviously alludes to classicism Wagner's key idea was to celebrate modern materials by developing new forms The entire façade is covered with square marble plates These are attached to the main structure by aluminum rivets or bolts, forming a pattern Inside, the main hall is designed like an atrium, with a large glass skylight allowing natural light to enter the heart of the building at all times Project is public! 6 Majolikahaus Linke Wienzeile Vienna This apartment building in Vienna, known as the Majolikahaus, was designed by n architect Otto Wagner at the turn of the 20th century The building's façade is covered in ceramic tiles, known as majolica, in the form a floral pattern The building is an excellent example of the Secession style, the Viennese version of Art Nouveau (text from Encarta) Project is not public! 1898 Otto Wagner 6

8 Spittelau District Heating Plant Spittelauer Lände 1090 Vienna Vienna has the persistence of its former mayor Helmut Zilk to thank for Hundertwasser having taken on the task of redesigning the exterior of the Spittelau District Heating Plant Originally Hundertwasser had opposed the idea upon consulting his friend, environmentalist Bernd Lötsch, as he had fundamental objections to a garbage-incinerating plant as long as all possibilities for avoiding garbage were not exhausted When it was promised that the plant would be equipped with the most modern emission-purification technology, and that apartments would be heated whose emissions would otherwise be a further source of pollution, Hundertwasser agreed to do the design The plain factory building was turned into a spectacular and unique work of art, and is an example of harmonic symbiosis between technology, ecology and art (text from Kunst Haus Wien) Project is not public! 1992, Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser 8

9 photo: Wojtek Gurak Schlachthausgasse Schlachthausgasse Vienna At the end of 1998, the Mautner-Markhof Children's Hospital in the 3rd district of Vienna was closed In 1999 the municipality explored alternative development possibilities for the vacant area A limited design competition was held, from which Coop Himmelb(l)au emerged as the winner The architects suggested to conserve to a large extent the valuable trees existing along the Kleingasse and set two slim building volumes in line with the street Slachthausgasse in order to return the urban block into it's previously defined form The complex now contains 82 apartments and approximately m2 of office space The 6+1-storey building is individually differentiated by sculpturally protruding building components In the so-called 'Head Building' oriented toward the south, a youth centre with own meeting spaces is the basement is integrated (text from website architects) Project is not public! 10 photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak T-Center St Marx Rennweg Vienna r/indexhtml The striking T-Center St Marx was designed and built by architect Günther Domenig Completed in 2004, the project has m2 of usable floor space and contains offices for 3000 employees Unusually proportioned, the building can be described as a reclining structure 60m high and 255m long with a 40m wing cantilevering out From a town-planning perspective this building represents the first step in the development of a new district on the site of the former St Marx abattoir and cattle sheds The T-Center St Marx is not only an office building for its owner, T-Mobile, it's also a large sculpture Domenig wanted to create a 280 meter long horizontal skyscraper and ended up with what is quite possibly the most unique office building in Vienna (text from Princeton ural Press and Michael Hierner) photo: Wojtek Gurak Public access unknown! 11 photo: Bjorn Utpott Loisium Hotel Loisium-Allee Langenlois On the edge of the town of Langenlois, 60 minutes west of Vienna, on a gently south-sloping vineyard, a new wine center and visitors' facility is built celebrating the rich local heritage of a magnificent wine vault system This historic subterranean network, which includes stone passages that are 900 years old, underlies the urban plan of the town Earthlike materials and palette combined with the views of the surrounding landscape create a strong connection and relationship of the hotel to its context Public functions including the lobby, a wine themed restaurant, bar, cigar lounge, conference and meeting facilities, and wellness and spa area are located on the ground floor with views open to the surrounding vineyard An inviting courtyard and terrace provides outdoor seating 82 guest rooms are located in two upper floors While the ground floor is transparent and open, the upper floors are more private (text from website architect) photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is public! 2005 Steven Holl Loisium Hotelbetriebs GmbH & Co KG 11

12 Loisium Visitor Center Loisium-Allee Langenlois This Wine Center's design concept is derived from the geometry of the nearby wine vaults The simple volume is cut and liced to create a rich geometry Some of the deep cuts are glazed in recycled bottle glass with rich green hues that cast their lustrous light on the interior Partially set into the earth of the vineyard, the slight forward tilt of the structure indicates its subterranean connection by ramp to the antique vault system Upon entering, the visitor perceives a wonderful volume of space and steps out to the vineyard and past a café A foot path leads down to the entrance of the vault system The return journey is made through a ramped passage dappled with light refracted through a reflecting pool The visitor then arrives on the lowest level of the building which houses a wine bar, a multi-purpose area and a shop Stairs and ramps connect to ground level with a generous wine shop and an upper floor with seminar rooms and offices (text from website architect) Project is public! 13 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Haus mit Veranden Buchengasse Vienna This "Haus mit Veranden" (house with verandas) consists of 250 apartments organized in a remarkable setting From a 1 and 2 story plinth carved with open spaces and private patio courtyards, the upper building is formed, drawing back from the lower, differentiated block edge The detached buildings are grouped by their terracing, cuts and projecting individual porches This approach offers the residents and neighbours open space, views and day light, despite the high density The principle of the floor plan is based on a simple module system that allows a collage of versatile floor plans A wide range of shared open spaces of different qualities and organization enrich the residential oasis, such as gardens, hot tub and sauna on the roof, playgrounds and introverted loggias Project is public!
