2 Jubilee 30 years of E.ON Stipendienfonds Dear scholarship-holders, dear alumni and friends of E.ON Stipendienfonds, On behalf of E.ON Stipendienfonds we cordially invite you to the festive event including an alumni meeting to be held in Berlin from 11 to 13 September. The event marks the foundation s 30th anniversary and its motto will be 30 years future. It will look back on successful German-Norwegian academic cooperation over the last three decades and at the same time show how E.ON Stipendienfonds will move into the future with fresh energy. Kicking off the event will be a get-together at Hotel Leonardo Royal Berlin Alexanderplatz Otto-Braun-Strasse Berlin on 11 September 2014, 19:00 h where you can exchange views and experiences or see former fellow students again. We are expecting Norwegian and German alumni as well as distinguished guests from the political, academic and cultural fields. We look forward to a stimulating few days and an enjoyable anniversary event in Berlin. 4 The event will take you to interesting sites of Berlin s history Leonardo Royal Hotel Berlin Alexanderplatz Royal Berlin, which is listed as a historical monument, features many art déco elements both externally and internally. Not genuine, but valuable: In the days of the GDR, the building was erected in 1956 in the so-called historicism style. Until the revolution in 1989, the building served as the imposing headquarters of the GDR Combine for Power Plant Construction. After the fall of the Wall, the three-winged building with its sandstone façade and the corner tower was used as Federal Police HQ. It was not until 2008 that a new foundation was laid and conversion into a hotel took place, the redevelopment naturally retaining the wonderful art déco style. Soho House: The building designed in the sober Bauhaus style, now listed as a historical monument, has eight storeys. Located in Torstrasse at the corner of Prenzlauer Allee, it has experienced eventful times. The former Jonass department store was inaugurated as Kreditkaufhaus in After confiscation from the Jewish owners during the Nazi era, the building served as head office of the Reich Youth Leadership and, from the 1950s, inter alia as HQ of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in the GDR. After extensive conversion work Soho House Berlin opened there in May 2010 an exclusive club hotel with rooms for functions and combined living and working spaces for artists, journalists, directors and managers in the media sector.

5 Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften This present-day venue for the sciences was erected in 1902/03 for Preussische Seehandlung, which later became the Prussian State Bank. Today the building houses the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, which was set up in 1992 by an accord between the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg. It follows the tradition of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences, which was established in 1700, with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz playing a decisive role. This history has been shaped by 78 Nobel laureates. With some 200 select members the Academy is today an institution transcending the border between disciplines and countries, bearing special responsibility for the sciences in the region of the German capital. In inter- and transdisciplinary working groups the Academicians deal with questions concerning the future of our society and work on developing the cultural heritage. With about 300 employees the Academy is the largest non-university research establishment in Berlin-Brandenburg. Internationally it is linked by contract to roughly 20 academies on four continents. In the days of the GDR, the main hall was converted with the assistance of the architect Hans Scharoun into a windowless, box-shaped room. On the occasion of the Academy s tercentenary, work began in 1999 under the direction of the architect Claus Anderhalten to uncover and reconstruct the original structure. The hall had a glass dome and twelve counters between sandstone pillars. During the War a bomb attack left the inner side wing in ruins, and the roof was damaged, leaving the beams exposed. Bullet holes can still be seen in the sandstone pillars. At the festive inauguration in 2002, the hall, formerly known as Kassensaal, was renamed Leibnizsaal after the Academy s founder.
