6 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: ING Real Estate Nationale Nederlanden Rašínovo Nábreží Prague The body language of the two towers nicknamed it dancing building and "Fred and Ginger Prominently located along the River Vltava in a historic district, it is one of Pragues most controversial buildings The site was originally occupied by a Neo-renaissance house from the end of the 19th century, destroyed during bombing in 1945, its remains finally removed in 1960 The neighboring house (with a small globe on the roof) was co-owned by Czech ex-president Vaclav Havel, who lived there from his childhood until the mid-1990s He ordered Vlado Milunic to make the first architectural study Afterwards the Dutch bank ING agreed to build a house there, and asked Milunic to invite a world-renowned architect Milunic first asked Jean Nouvel, he rejected the invitation because of the small size of the site (491 square meters); he then asked Frank Gehry, and he accepted the challenge Gehry had an almost unlimited budget, because ING wanted to create an icon in Prague photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! 8 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Gasometer City Guglgasse Vienna Austria These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as part of the gasworks at Simmering After they were closed down, the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments, shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001 When they were built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe They are listed by the country s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of industrial architecture The renovation goal was to reuse the external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of demolition waste The gigantic size of this construction project is illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers Project is public! 9 photo: Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten Vertically Landscaped Housing Hardtmuthgasse 68 A-1100 Vienna Austria On a corner plot in Vienna, Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler Architekten built a compact block of 17 apartments Balancing the high density of the project are the spacious communal amenities on the ground floor (workshop, hobby room, children?s room), the public roof garden and the private?gardens? in front of every living room In order to bring coherence to the large façade areas, including the curved soffits of the loggias, the architects opted for a corrugated aluminium sheeting that could be applied without seams The result is powerful and homogeneous But it?s an unconventional choice of material for a residential project where brick, wood or concrete tend to be the preferred option That surprise effect is precisely what the architects were aiming for In choosing corrugated aluminium they were also setting themselves the challenge of showing that a material they claim usually evokes negative associations can deliver an elegant building with a congenial atmosphere Project is not public! 10 photo: Petr Parolek photo: Petr Parolek Brno Airport Terminal Letiste Brno-Turany Brno The new terminal building at Brno airport brings to mind all sorts of things Looking at the skylights one is put in mind a streamlined shark, while the skin itself, in a pattern of hexagonal titanium-zinc plates that covers both roof and façades, is more reminiscent of a snake With its accentuated entrance, its also presents itself as a symbolic arch, marking the arrival or departure of visitors In fact, what fascinated young local architect Petr Parolek most when designing this building, were the logistics of travel, people's movements and the speed and aerodynamics of airplanes Its sculptural shape stands in sharp contrast to the functionalist, box-like buildings typical of Brno's architectural style, and forms a new landmark for the town Although the dark monolith looks quite imperforate from the outside, it opens up from the inside through its transparent, high-tech steel structure and rooflights, whose curves emulate those of the outer shell photo: Petr Parolek Project is public! 2006 Cooperating designer Structural engineer Structural engineer Petr Parolek FA Parolli Foboz 97 OKF design Southern Moravian Region Kirsten_Hannema Getting to the aerodrome by car is very simple, as the aerodrome is located still within the town territory, next to the D1 Brno-Olomouc motorway Driving in the direction from Prague, at km 201 there is a motorway exit marked "Slatina" and the off-turn to the aerodrome is distinctly marked The aerodrome is 2 km from the motorway exit 10

11 photo: Lachlan Blair photo: Lachlan Blair Czerwenka Apartment Elisabethstraße Vienna Austria The former apartment of the Austrian singer Professor Oskar Czerwenka ( ) in the Opernringhof, that is situated in the centre of the City of Vienna, was reconstructed and adapted for rental by Vienna-based architect Susanne Zottl together with Kristof Jarder The sculptural object, that also serves as storage space, was designed to welcome residents and visitors and to connect living space, dining area and kitchen In its orientation and guiding gesture it opens up the space from the inner courtyard to the Operngasse and so communicates the spacious dimensions of the apartment While connecting on the one hand, the object also serves as a divider that provides privacy for the bedroom and the bathrooms photo: Lachlan Blair Project is not public! 13 photo: Filip Slapal photo: Filip Slapal Omega Palace Department Store Námestí Svobody 18 Brno The Omega Palace Department Store on Svobody Square in Brno is part of a block of big, neo-renaissance and baroque buildings and interwoven with internal passages The design links up with this structure via a horizontal passage that runs through the store and connects the square with the neighbouring Alfa Palace Escalators in the central hall connect the various floors The elevation facing the square is a modern interpretation of the neighbouring buildings: the opalescent glass suggests mass, an effect that is reinforced by the fact that the glass is not a single smooth surface, but is punctuated by storey-high windows with deep reveals Inside, mass gives way to openness In keeping with the horizontally and vertically connected structure, spaces are visually linked to one another by the use of clear glass for the balustrades, internal walls, floor inserts and lighting strips Project is public! 14 photo: Ester Havlová photo: Ester Havlová Eucon Building Ulice Chlumova 204/ Prague This mixed-use building in Prague, comprising six residential aboveground storeys, two ground-floor shops, a two-level basement car park and an office block, was built after the demolition of four old housing blocks In architectural heritage areas like Zizkov, new developments are subjected to strict conditions, so the building had to adhere to the neighbouring street and cornice line as well as articulating the front face of the building to reflect its original four-part composition Since no conditions were imposed on the design of the residential courtyard, the architects seized the opportunity to create a richer world here: the different apartment sizes are reflected in the colours of their entrance doors and the owner's maisonette flat is raised on pillars on the roof of the office section The roof lights suggest prefabricated sewerage shafts while the maisonette recalls old Zizkov workshops, showing how well the architects have studied the history of the place Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Fránek s Klara Caskova Eucon Ltd Aleksandr_Skalicky photo: Ester Havlová Zizkov is a neighbourhood of Prague, also known as Prague 3 Zizkov 14

19 Housing at Kaiserstrasse Kaiserstrasse Vienna Austria This intervention involves an interesting compacting of the dense city since it takes over the traditional inner patio of the 19th urban development and considerably increases residential and population density in an already dense area The authors of the work explain the goodness of the building, whose most debatable aspect is its outer façade Project is not public! 20 Students Guest House at the Viennese University Molkereistrasse 1 A-1020 Vienna Austria This hall of residence is added to an existing block The insertion of student residences in consolidated fabrics of cities, where housing costs hinder this group of the population from easily finding housing, promotes the rejuvenation of these kinds of neighbourhoods while bringing up the residential density This students guest house will be used to host 278 Erasmus students It is the first Viennese 'Passiv house' The façade design is based on a single window type bringing natural daylight into the students apartments The technical infrastructure of the building consists of a mechanical ventilation system, which is based on geothermics and heat recovery photo: Eduard Hueber Project is not public! 21 photo: Lucian Ilica Hundertwasserhaus Kegelgasse Vienna Austria The Hundertwasserhaus is an apartment complex in Vienna, Austria, designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser It was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan Hundertwasser was not paid, stating that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from being erected The house features a very organic design, with its uneven floors and plentiful flora Its roof is covered in grass and trees are grown from within, their limbs extending from the windows There are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes There are also artificial trees; the columns that can be seen reminded Hundertwasser of trees The windows and mosaic tiles are laid out not in a grid, but in a more playful organic way, with crooked angles Project is not public! 23 photo: Piotr Krajewski Paltramplatz Residential Building Paltramplatz Vienna Austria The appearance of the Paltramplatz Residential Building is that of a crisp-edged cube into the matte black surface of which an irregular relief pattern of ribbon windows and loggias have been embedded These windows and loggias make the compact monolith seem like a cabinet with drawers that can be pulled out at will The apartment building with its 22 units fills the gap in the heterogeneous fabric of its surroundings in an utterly natural and unspectacular way Forming an exciting contrast to the static tranquillity of the basic shape of the building is the trapezoidal cantilevered, rotated-off-axis, dynamic roof construction Here, holes have been made for illumination purposes This perforated, polygonal shed roof seems to hover over the building, creating an original and distinctive closure Project is not public! 82 photo: afarch photo: afarch Office Building Na Vítezné Pláni Na Vítezné pláni Prague While designing this building the architects recognized the unique position of this place within the Prague relief and spatial relations The relief edge starting at the site ends by the Vysehrad (castle) creating a skyline for Vinohrady (quarter) across the valley Despite the robust character of the Nuselský most (bridge) and nearby buildings resting on this edge, they tried to follow the fine features of the dominant Karlov (church) and Vysehrad; they wanted to adhere to the accents whose scale does not oust them from the urban environment, but make it its natural component So, the building designed in close vicinity of the Police Headquarters establishes a transition between the XL scale of the front of the Nuselský bridge and surrounding blocks of flats Project is not public! 84 photo: Jan Kudej photo: Community center Za Brumlovkou Prague While looking for an architectural form the architects have faced a task that a simple and unpretending building reflecting its purpose would look appropriately in the neighbourhood of office buildings of an absolutely different scale Even the so far smallest Brumlovka fitness building was much bigger We found a generous format of a single 'window' into the 'pronaos', an exterior covered open vestibule in front of the entrance, as the means of balancing the surrounding buildings' scale Its horizontal proportion is directly derived from the elementary prism of the whole building, also horizontal one and of the same dimension The window is the key motive of the façade and the whole building; figures of people passing behind or standing here are partly hidden from the busy street life behind a screen of bamboo trees photo: Jan Kudej Aulik Fiser s Maranatha os OndraT 84

87 photo: Aulik Fiser s photo: Office building Beta Vyskocilova Prague The Beta office building was designed to match the new development of a similar typology It is not in touch with the highway as are some neighbouring buildings, does not relate to the existing houses on the opposite side of the street and does not have to cope with the contradictory effects of its surroundings It may be a simple universal box offering offices to the landlord not far from looking like former premises of factories nowadays replaced by office buildings due to modern job opportunities Absolutely flat facades are not meant to be an abstract composition, but a structure wrapping the whole building It introduces a rhythm to the interior by three types of natural lighting - by windows of variable heights of plinths and walls above lintels offering various types of office areas (an open space, an individual office, a meeting room) Two atriums separated by a bridge between two lift cores improve the natural lighting of internal areas photo: Aulik Fiser s Project is not public! 88 photo: Aulik Fiser s photo: Aulik Fiser s Residential houses in Brno Vrbovecká Brno The plasticity of seemingly flat things, a fine game of lights and shades on planes and grating, a relative scale - a compact forest, a panel house - a slab An important motive is the position on the edge of a group of panel houses and the elementary goal is creating architecture of buildings as a transition from a panel development to a free landscape - flats as close to the forest as possible, a forest penetrating in to the flats - large windows, wood to balconies The design emphasizes simple clear shapes and proportions of the whole building and details The north façade facing the panel houses is completely flat; their articulation projecting the internal arrangement of sections and corridors materializes in shallow embossments on the basic mass' level - an exemption are the broken and emphasised entrances to the buildings or individual sections, as the case may be The south front is on the contrary, richer in shapes and materials photo: Aulik Fiser s Project is not public!
