3 photo: Dirk Verwoerd L'Estel Ferit Playa de la Barceloneta Barcelona These blocks, tower thing and leaning cubes on Barceloneta beach, which seem to have become a bit of a landmark, are actually an art work called L'Estel Ferit (the wounded star or the injured comet) and was commissioned for the 1992 OlympicsThe Wounded Star pays homage to the Barceloneta borough, originally the sailors' quarters This rusty titled tower conjures up images of an old lighthouse which is no longer in use or needed The sculpture consists of four steel cubes stacked one above the other The material used is iron, glass and light on a big concrete base Inside the bottom cube are sea related things that are lit up at night 1992 Artist Rebecca Horn dirkverwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd 3

6 Communications Tower Carrer de Pierre de Coubertin Barcelona The 136 m high communications tower designed by Santiago Calatrava (also know as Torre de Calatrava) was one of the landmarks of Barcelona in 1992 The extensive silhouette of the Montjuic mountain was changed forever in that instance, re-urbanised for the celebration of the Olympic Games and the city in general 1992 Santiago Calatrava City of Barcelona Naomi Metro: L1 and L3 (Espanya) Bus: 50, 55, 61 and PM Free admission 6

8 photo: Ariel Ramírez photo: Ariel Ramírez Public square Badalona Carrer de l'enginyer Deulofeu Badalona This intervention proposed a consideration of the car park and the square as a single unit, integrating the one into the other, blurring the distinctions between them, and simultaneously allowing them, figuratively speaking, to breathe in their coexistence in the form of a square that was designed more as a gardened roof than as a fragment of an urban green zone It has been possible to achieve this sensation through the design of a space that is organic and yet, at the same time, is endowed with an intimate character, that can be broken down for and by usage while offering a unique and overall understanding The design of the parterres, based on as system of lightweight coffering, has allowed for the layout of extensive green areas, elements that are difficult to locate above a car park, and which confer on the square an original atmosphere that is notably more agreeable than the typical local paved squares photo: Ariel Ramírez Floor area/size m² AIASalazar-Navarro 8

9 Barcelona Pavilion Avinguda del Marquès de Comillas Barcelona A work emblematic of the Modern Movement, it has been exhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspired the oeuvre of several generations of architects It was designed as the German national pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition Built from glass, travertine and different kinds of marble, the Pavilion was conceived to accommodate the official reception presided over by King Alphonso XIII of along with the German authorities After the closure of the Exhibition, the Pavilion was disassembled in 1930 As time went by, it became a key point of reference not only in Mies van der Rohe's own career but also in twentieth-century architecture as a whole Given the significance and reputation of the Pavilion, in 1980 thoughts turned towards its possible reconstruction Work began in 1983 and the new building was opened on its original site in 1986 photo: Kevin Louage 1929 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Germany Naomi every day (including holidays) Metro: L1 and L3 (Espanya), Bus: Placa Espanya, FFCC: Espanya, Bus: lines 13 50, Tourist Bus: Caixa Forum Pavelló Mies van der Rohe 9
