4 photo: Merijn Neeleman photo: Dirk Verwoerd Fish Carrer de Ramon Trias Fargas Barcelona One of the first public projects of Gehry is the Barcelona Fish a huge fish sculpture placed on Barcelona s waterfront for the 1992 Olympics The monumental fish sculpture functions as a landmark in the Olympic Village, anchoring a retail complex designed by Gehry Partners within a larger hotel development by Skidmore, Owing & Merill This fish sculpture was also a landmark in the history of Frank O Gehry & Associates, inaugurating the firm's use of computer-aided design and manufacturing The project's financial and scheduling constraints prompted James M Glymph, a partner in the firm, to search for a computer program that would facilitate the design and construction process, leading to the adoption of CATIA (computer aided three-dimensional interactive application) The sculpture was modeled entirely in 3D and delivered directly to the fabricators as a 3D model The fish is a frequently recurring motif in Gehry's work, serving as inspiration and mascot photo: Wojtek Gurak 1992 Gehry Partners City of Barcelona / 1992 Olympics MI_MOA The fish is viewed from the public street, so its open 24/7 Metro: Barceloneta, Ciutadella/Villa Olimpica 4

10 Equipamientos Londres-Villarroel Calle Londres Barcelona This project is an intervention whose goal is to clear a saturated residential fabric The incorporation of a varied programme on this block, such as subsidised housing for young people, a primary school and sports fields, allows a reinterpretation of the typological possibilities of this block in the urban development by Cerdà with a direct relationship between inside and outside and a break in the buildings that does not impede the view of the original urban elements However, the façade of the buildings creates a proportion and space rhythm whose relationship with its actual surroundings is open to discussion Regarding the advantages that this type of programme contributes to the context, not only are the community facilities very much worth noting, but the revitalisation of the population of 19th century bourgeois urban developments with a type of user that is becoming scarcer and scarcer Project is not public! m² Coll-Leclerc Arquitectos City of Barcelona aplust photo: José Hevia The project is situated in the area of l'eixample in Barcelona 10

13 photo: Rafael Vargas photo: Rafael Vargas Mestre Nicolau 19 Carrer del Mestre Nicolau Barcelona The complete refurbishment of this office building with serious structural problems allowed its transformation into a corporate building It took into account the need to achieve a high level of flexibility and required services, as well as designing a new façade that identifies it as a modern corporate building, using colour as a differentiating tool On the façade, transparent, coloured glass slats form a plane in front of the enclosure The set changes gradually in colour and density Horizontally, the gradation of colour varies from yellow to orange tones, borrowing awnings on the balconies that surround it Vertically, the density of the slats is determined by the solar radiation and the size of the street that makes protection on the higher levels more necessary The forging of the ground floor was rebuilt to the street level elevation, while the forging of the basement was raised to obtain an underdevelopment of the parking ramp Project is not public! m² b720 arquitectos Layetana Inmuebles b720_arquitectos photo: Rafael Vargas 13

14 photo: Pedro Penguante Banco Sabadell Atlantico Entrance and Awning Pl Sant Roc Barcelona This project consists of a minor intervention in the entrance to an existing bank building The architects have highlighted the intervention at three different levels Firstly, the flooring is a white sheet that touches the ground at either extreme (as a ramp or as a stairway) and floats over it at the centre Secondly, the awning is effectively a large trough that collects rainwater and channels it down to the ground at either end Lastly, the finishes of the doorway (a series of mirrors, doormats and glazed surfaces) seek to break down the image of passage into independent photographic stills, highlighting the singularity of the movement: an interchange between exterior and interior photo: Beat Marugg Public access unknown! 16 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Casa de la Marina Passeig de Joan de Borbó Barcelona This building was the first urban apartment block carried out from start to finish by Coderch and Valls The urban context of the building in the 1950s was not valuable property, namely Barceloneta's narrow streets and Barcelona's industrial port For this reason, Coderch and Valls designed an introverted housing block where the exterior views are always conditioned by fixed venetian-type blinds The construction has affinities with the Italian avant-garde of the time, especially with Ignazio Gardella's work The building has a classic composition in three blocks: a two-storey zocalo for commercial use, combining large glazed areas and small-scale masonry; a six-storey body of apartments, composed by vertical strips of glazed ceramic tiles and the aforementioned white venetian blinds, and the coronation with a big eave of wooden boards Project is not public! m² Main designer, Josep Antoni Coderch Manel Valls Vergés Instituto Social de la Marina Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 16

19 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín BASF Building Rehabilitation Passeig Gracia Barcelona The project faces the rehabilitation and change of use of a building which sites on a chamfer of the Paseo de Gracia, the most emblematic via of Barcelona The former offices of BASF on Barcelona are transformed into a residential building with commercial space on the ground floor The most meaningful point of the project is the total substitution of the façade Ferrater designs a new plane façade that delete the former cantilevers The façade is thought as a several layers filter, 50% transparent-50% opaque, composed by fix panels of translucent marble, sliding panels of wooden slats and glazed bays The composition of the façade alternates the position of the different kinds of panels reaching a great formal dynamism, at the same time the different possibilities of the sliding panels allow optimal conditions of natural light into the dwellings photo: José F García Martín Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Carlos Ferrater S4 Arquitectes Renta Corporación Jose_Garcia 19

23 photo: Adrià Goula photo: Adrià Goula Historical Station of Tibidabo Funicular Avinguda del Tibidabo Barcelona The lower station of the Tibidabo's funicular was created as the starting point to come up the Tibidabo's mountain With the birth of the Amusement Park this station simultaneously became the parks' new entrance, maintaining the quality of train station The will of being the new entrance to the Park makes us to present an hazardous but very clear proposal, which is, to be the entrance hall to the magic and the illusion waiting on the top of the mountain The architects tried to understand the place, a surprising place; a house for a train that at the same time is a house without rooms or closed spaces, only a single space as entrance giving the welcome to the Amusement Park This double reality is really amazing: on one hand, the space is perceived to protect the train, but on the other hand the common domestic architecture for a train station is also understood photo: Adrià Goula m² MiAS Arquitectes miasarquitectes 23
