photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Santa Catarina Market Avinguda de Francesc Cambó Barcelona Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina strikes a magical balance between local producers and consumers, contemporary architecture and tourism The redevelopment retains its original use as a retail food market A huge, undulating canopy covers an existing, former rundown neo-classical market in a large square within sight of the gothic cathedral The canopy consists of a mosaic of 325,000 vividly multicolored hexagonal Spanish tiles set in mortar, "whose various colors recall a sill life of produce" It is a view that will be particularly appreciated by the residents of the neighboring apartment blocks The roof is supported on three primary clear-span trusses that cut through, up and over the roof But, from below, it reads as an organic timber assembly At the opposite end from the retained arcade, an irregular latticework of timber slats brings to mind an Indonesian village hall - a typically offbeat Miralles invention and a reminder that he worked on this design before his death in m² Services engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT PGI Grup Foment de Ciutat Vella MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst Barcelona's daily food markets are all in covered halls and are open daily between 8am and 3pm and 5pm till 8pm, though times may change in summer and winter Metro : Jaume I (Line 4) 6

photo: Adrià Goula Sardà photo: Adrià Goula Sardà Reception desk Can Ricart Carrer Sant Oleguer Barcelona The proposed reform for the reception hall of the Can Ricart Sports Centre is determined by a set of functional requirements that have been demonstrated over the past two years, and by the desire to give more prominence to the reception desk, ameliorating its visibility from the entrance To respond to these demands in a complex space as the lobby, where the confluence of several buildings make up the sports centre, we opted for a simple solution A large circular desk (4 meters in diameter) of a single-section meets the requirements and gives a new image, draws the visitor's attention and resolves effectively the circulation The choice of the colour was made with special care: the counter and the front (outer side) is a corporative and bold color, while the interior is all in black, creating a vacuum As for the construction, the furniture was raised with the utmost simplicity, virtually without joints, without skirting, to enhance the abstraction of the object The finish is reduce photo: Adrià Goula Sardà m² Services engineer vora arquitectura Alessandro Cozzo vora_arquitectura Monday through Friday Metro: L2-L3 Paral lel; L3 Liceu BUS: 20, 24, 36, 57, 64, 91, 120, 157 NITBUS: N0, N6 7

photo: Adrià Goula photo: Adrià Goula Can Ricart Sport Complex Carrer de Sant Oleguer Barcelona The building completes the urban block bounded by two different public open spaces urally the project strategy starts from the existing conditions that made it especially complex ie the integration of two buildings with strong identities, the sports pavilion (from the nineties) and the industrial building of the 19th century The main effort of the architects was to arrive at a compact and coherent functional whole that volumetrically maintains the reading of the three bodies that form it: the two existing buildings and the new construction that contains the swimming pool, all formally autonomous The new building is materially and formally austere The façade is made from exposed in-situ concrete, giving a texture that is a homage to the start of the textile industry in Catalonia in this area of the city The texture has come from a specially combined formwork of timber planks of different characteristics photo: Adrià Goula m² vora arquitectura Foment de Ciutat Vella thomas metro: L2-L3 Paral lel, L3 Liceu bus: 20, 24, 36, 57, 64, 91, 120,

photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Civic Center Sagrada Familia Carrer Provença Barcelona The project is sited at the Eixample district, which is characterised by the urban grid of Plan Cerdá and its uniformed square blocks This project means a redefinition of a complex already existing through the recycling of a unused building to convert it into a library The entrances to the buildings are rearranged by placing them in the corner, at the same time a new element, housing the fire escape, is set up into this place; these two operations emphasizes the importance of the chamfer in the Cerda's grid The library building is based on two ideas; first, allowing the light penetrates in the library by transforming the walls into glass, a light aluminium mesh provides sun protection; the second idea is the removal of the central bay of the former building, this idea generates a three floor high patio that allows the reading of the building as a unique space photo: José F García Martín m² Technical engineer Structural engineer Ruisánchez Arquitectes Joan González Gou Robert Brufau Proeixample Jose_Garcia 12

photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Casa de la Marina Passeig de Joan de Borbó Barcelona This building was the first urban apartment block carried out from start to finish by Coderch and Valls The urban context of the building in the 1950s was not valuable property, namely Barceloneta's narrow streets and Barcelona's industrial port For this reason, Coderch and Valls designed an introverted housing block where the exterior views are always conditioned by fixed venetian-type blinds The construction has affinities with the Italian avant-garde of the time, especially with Ignazio Gardella's work The building has a classic composition in three blocks: a two-storey zocalo for commercial use, combining large glazed areas and small-scale masonry; a six-storey body of apartments, composed by vertical strips of glazed ceramic tiles and the aforementioned white venetian blinds, and the coronation with a big eave of wooden boards Project is not public! m² Main designer, Josep Antoni Coderch Manel Valls Vergés Instituto Social de la Marina Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 18

photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona Plaça Vila de Madrid Plaça Vila de Madrid s/n Barcelona The design sets out to revitalize the square as an urban pedestrian space, celebrating its archaeological site The project proposed a central stretch of grass on the same level as CCanuda and the eastern side of the square The grassy surface slopes gently down to the level of the Roman necropolis Before the Palau Sabassona building, a strip of pavement with a portico provides a platform from which to view the tombs A walkway projects over the archaeological remains, joining up with the prolongation of CDuc de la Victòria, which connects with the Rambla via a shopping arcade This walkway houses a flexible system of retracting sliding doors, constructed to control access to the archaeological site The outer edge of the square is developed using the construction materials and street furniture habitually found in Barcelona's old town Grass, basaltic stone and Corten steel are introduced into the centre, however, the latter being used in walls to protect the existing trees photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona m², Landscape architect BCQ arquitectura BCQarquitecturaBarcelona Foment de Ciutat Vella, Barcelona City Council 19

photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga Diagonal Mar Park Av Diagonal y Cinturón Ronda Litoral Barcelona It's design favours an interaction with the city It is organised by following a series of paths, which similar to the branches of a tree, spread out in all directions A type of Rambla, a main thoroughfare, connects La Diagonal directly to the nearby beach crossing the Litoral ring by means of a pedestrian bridge and it transforms itself into a series of recreational tracks: to stroll, for skating, cycling, walking etc A large area of water in which there are various fountains, the flow of water and the vegetation on its edges oxygenates the water The presence of the water characterises the vegetation of the zone and the vegetation spreads following the direction of the shores near the sea and the lake It is growing taller and denser until it reaches the adjacent streets Small places are to be found on the edges of the park Places where a series of large ceramic vases join with the existing vegetation, similar to the garden of a house " Miralles Tagliabue" photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga Landscape designer Technical engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT EDAW Europroject Consultores Asociados Diagonal Mar / HINES MVar By Car: Access routes to Diagonal Mar include Avenida Diagonal, Ronda Litoral and Rambla Prim and are within a twenty minute drive from the city centre By Public Transport: The Diagonal Mar Centre is connected by a network of ten bus and three underground lines linked to all points of the city Underground Stations: Maresme / Forum, Selva de Mar, Besós-Mar Buses Lines: Lines 7, 36, 41, 43, 141, N-6, N

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Forum Building Avinguda Diagonal Barcelona The Forum Building is a triangular measuring 180 meters on each side and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formed by the surrounding streets It is considered by some to be an icon of the "New Barcelona " However, local opinion on its aesthetic and functional merits is deeply divided It was the symbol of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and the serious flaws that arose during its construction were widely covered in both the Spanish national and foreign press It has lain empty since the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacity to hold 3,200 people The seating is below the Forum Plaza level The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructure measuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on 17 pillars From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditorium are suspended The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m Herzog and De Meuron Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 Naomi photo: Francisco Nogueira Metro: L4 - Stop "Maresme/Fórum" Bus: Lines NitBus: N6 Tramway: Line 1, Stop Trambesós: Fórum 31

photo: Pedro Madueño photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona Marina Barcelona Forum 2004 Port Forum Sant Adrià de Besòs Barcelona A marina should be memorable for its activity rather than for its form Hence the clarity of its forms but also the soft curves of its limits in floor plan and section; hence also the attention to night lighting The process began with the design of a series of commercial constructions without façades produced by tectonic manipulation of the site The roofs of the commercial premises were turned into public space, prime vantage points overlooking the harbour A few premises were built on the waterfront to expand the commercial and spatial potential of the public marina space The use of materials also reflects some restraint: the street furniture is simplified to the maximum; a single element provides a range of functions: lighting, seating, railing, table and housing for ventilation ducts, and port architecture uses concrete in generous, sweeping gestures The weathering Cor-ten steel suggests the image of a great ship washed up on the shore after a storm photo: Andreas Kammermeier m², Landscape architect, Urban planner BCQ arquitectura BCQarquitecturaBarcelona Barcelona City Council 32

photo: Beat Marugg photo: Beat Marugg International Convention Center (CCIB) Avinguda Diagonal Barcelona This multi-purpose cultural building includes a very large auditorium, a multi-functional performing space, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, and a restaurant and foyer, in addition to technical services, loading docks, storage spaces, and car parking on two levels It was part of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures in Barcelona and has 45 translucent halls, spread over 3 floors, 2 mezzanines and a basement The CCIB and the neighboring building Forum Auditorium (by Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron), are linked to each other by a 20-meter-wide underground walkway Mateo 'explains': I have gone back to loving the precision of iron: normal, but monstrous, banal but not domestic, superhuman The mega structure is seen proudly in the East façade, opposite the elegant neighbouring triangle The bones are covered in the rest of the building photo: Beat Marugg m² Lighting designer Structural engineer Mateo Arquitectura Biosca & Botey Brufau, Obiol, Moya & Ass Ajuntament de Barcelona MI_MOA Metro: L4 yellow line - Stop "Maresme/Fórum" Bus: Lines NitBus: N6 Tramway: Line 1, Stop Trambesós: Fórum All these stops are located just a few minutes walking away from the CCIB 33

photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Wojtek Gurak Esplanade and Photovoltaic power plant Avinguda del Camp de la Bota Barcelona One of the intentions of the Forum 2004 in Barcelona was to take advantage of the area s existing infrastructure So they integrated the existing Besòs sewage treatment plant (total urban renovation area 100 hectares) and covered parts of it with photovoltaics On the plaza, the Esplanade, is a sailing school, also covered with panels The Pergola stands a bit further out towards the sea, on the entrance to the new Port Forum A sculptural concrete structure with a simple plane offers a nice place of shade on its otherwise large, empty and mostly hot area Expected performance ratio of Pergola system: 1250 kwh/kwp (annual yield app 554 MWh/year) The city has 55 projects to establish a more sustainable city model, whilst reducing environmental impact through energy savings, an increase in the use of renewable energies and energy efficiency In order to maximize solar exposure throughout the year, the panel faces south and is tilted at a 35 angle Excellent sea views m² Martínez Lapeña - Torres Arquitectos INABENSA Phönix SonnenStrom Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 Services engineer Project manager photo: Wojtek Gurak 24/7 MI_MOA If you walk or cycle along the sea from the Port Olímpic for about 3 km, you ll get to this area (also accessible by tram from the city) Well worth a visit 34

photo: Ariel Ramírez photo: Ariel Ramírez Can Toda City Sports Centre Calle Ramiro de Maeztu Barcelona The design for the Extension for Club Natació de Catalunya incorporated the latest technologies applicable for this kind of facility, both with regard to the treatment of the water in the swimming pools and in the thermal and the hydrothermal control of the air throughout the facilities, with the installation of a computerised control system that automatically optimises the functioning of the different systems at all times These installations and the control thereof contributes to a minimisation of energy consumptions, adapting needs and production levels and ensuring a better utilization of natural climate control resources, along with the highly sustainable performance of the facilities as a whole photo: Ariel Ramírez m² AIA Salazar Navarro Club Natació Barcelona, City of Barcelona AIASalazar-Navarro 35

photo: Adrià Goula photo: Adrià Goula Historical Station of Tibidabo Funicular Avinguda del Tibidabo Barcelona The lower station of the Tibidabo's funicular was created as the starting point to come up the Tibidabo's mountain With the birth of the Amusement Park this station simultaneously became the parks' new entrance, maintaining the quality of train station The will of being the new entrance to the Park makes us to present an hazardous but very clear proposal, which is, to be the entrance hall to the magic and the illusion waiting on the top of the mountain The architects tried to understand the place, a surprising place; a house for a train that at the same time is a house without rooms or closed spaces, only a single space as entrance giving the welcome to the Amusement Park This double reality is really amazing: on one hand, the space is perceived to protect the train, but on the other hand the common domestic architecture for a train station is also understood photo: Adrià Goula m² MiAS Arquitectes miasarquitectes 36

photo: Pedro Pegenaute photo: Eugeni Pons Court of Sant Boi Carles Martí-Vila Barcelona The building is centred around three vertical bars separated by three courtyards on a plinth Large skylights illuminate the ground-floor entrance hall This hall acts as a focus point for all public areas and their vertical nuclei The hearing rooms and the upper bars, one per room, of the judicial offices are situated on the plinth Four areas in each corner allow access and communication for the public, judges, court workers etc The civil registry office opens out onto the rear street, emphasising the important role it plays in the façade as a whole and the surrounding public area The concrete sheets are placed at different distances and inclinations, giving a certain dynamic feel (a court should appear agile and alive) to the building, while at the same time orienting and framing the visual impact As a result, the image of the façades gradually changes depending on where you look at the building from photo: Pedro Pegenaute m² GISA Departament de Justicia Generalitat de Catalunya BAASarquitectura 37

photo: Timo Mecking photo: Timo Mecking Igualada Cemetery Carrer dels Països Baixos Igualada Igualada Cemetery (also known as Cemetery Nou) was built by Carme Pinòs and Enric Miralles after an architectural competition held in 1984 Following the concept of a river of life as a "swirly stream that eroded the smooth curves of the banks of burial niches" (Peter Buchanan), they created a modern city of the dead The cemetery is a site-specific sculpture embedded in the hilly landscape of Catalonia In addition to a sloping link-up road that leads to a central funeral square, the architects provided a (still unfinished) chapel and a mortuary building The emotional impact of the project focuses on visual forces which appeal to the memories of mourners and visitors The dynamic shape of walls, ramps and landscape are used as an expression of life's fugacity Enric Miralles was buried in one of the tombs after his death on July 3rd in 2000 photo: Timo Mecking 1994 Main designer, Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT Estudio Carme Pinós City of Igualada timo_mecking Sunday & Monday, 1st of October until 31st of March: 10:00 to 13:00/ 15:00 to 18:00 1st of April until 30th of September: 10:00 to 13:00/ 16:00 to 19:00 Igualada is near Barcelona and can easily be reached by train At Igualada main station just take a taxi to Cemetery Nou because it might be difficult to find and most inhabitants will show you the way to the old graveyard nearby if you ask them where Igualada Cemetery is 38
