photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak Barcelona Pavilion Avinguda del Marquès de Comillas Barcelona A work emblematic of the Modern Movement, it has been exhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspired the oeuvre of several generations of architects It was designed as the German national pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition Built from glass, travertine and different kinds of marble, the Pavilion was conceived to accommodate the official reception presided over by King Alphonso XIII of along with the German authorities After the closure of the Exhibition, the Pavilion was disassembled in 1930 As time went by, it became a key point of reference not only in Mies van der Rohe's own career but also in twentieth-century architecture as a whole Given the significance and reputation of the Pavilion, in 1980 thoughts turned towards its possible reconstruction Work began in 1983 and the new building was opened on its original site in 1986 photo: Kevin Louage 1929 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Germany Naomi every day (including holidays) Metro: L1 and L3 (Espanya), Bus: Placa Espanya, FFCC: Espanya, Bus: lines 13 50, Tourist Bus: Caixa Forum Pavelló Mies van der Rohe 5
photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Santa Catarina Market Avinguda de Francesc Cambó Barcelona Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina strikes a magical balance between local producers and consumers, contemporary architecture and tourism The redevelopment retains its original use as a retail food market A huge, undulating canopy covers an existing, former rundown neo-classical market in a large square within sight of the gothic cathedral The canopy consists of a mosaic of 325,000 vividly multicolored hexagonal Spanish tiles set in mortar, "whose various colors recall a sill life of produce" It is a view that will be particularly appreciated by the residents of the neighboring apartment blocks The roof is supported on three primary clear-span trusses that cut through, up and over the roof But, from below, it reads as an organic timber assembly At the opposite end from the retained arcade, an irregular latticework of timber slats brings to mind an Indonesian village hall - a typically offbeat Miralles invention and a reminder that he worked on this design before his death in m² Services engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT PGI Grup Foment de Ciutat Vella MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst Barcelona's daily food markets are all in covered halls and are open daily between 8am and 3pm and 5pm till 8pm, though times may change in summer and winter Metro : Jaume I (Line 4) 6
photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Wojtek Gurak Esplanade and Photovoltaic power plant Avinguda del Camp de la Bota Barcelona One of the intentions of the Forum 2004 in Barcelona was to take advantage of the area s existing infrastructure So they integrated the existing Besòs sewage treatment plant (total urban renovation area 100 hectares) and covered parts of it with photovoltaics On the plaza, the Esplanade, is a sailing school, also covered with panels The Pergola stands a bit further out towards the sea, on the entrance to the new Port Forum A sculptural concrete structure with a simple plane offers a nice place of shade on its otherwise large, empty and mostly hot area Expected performance ratio of Pergola system: 1250 kwh/kwp (annual yield app 554 MWh/year) The city has 55 projects to establish a more sustainable city model, whilst reducing environmental impact through energy savings, an increase in the use of renewable energies and energy efficiency In order to maximize solar exposure throughout the year, the panel faces south and is tilted at a 35 angle Excellent sea views m² Martínez Lapeña - Torres Arquitectos INABENSA Phönix SonnenStrom Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 Services engineer Project manager photo: Wojtek Gurak 24/7 MI_MOA If you walk or cycle along the sea from the Port Olímpic for about 3 km, you ll get to this area (also accessible by tram from the city) Well worth a visit 7
photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga Diagonal Mar Park Av Diagonal y Cinturón Ronda Litoral Barcelona It's design favours an interaction with the city It is organised by following a series of paths, which similar to the branches of a tree, spread out in all directions A type of Rambla, a main thoroughfare, connects La Diagonal directly to the nearby beach crossing the Litoral ring by means of a pedestrian bridge and it transforms itself into a series of recreational tracks: to stroll, for skating, cycling, walking etc A large area of water in which there are various fountains, the flow of water and the vegetation on its edges oxygenates the water The presence of the water characterises the vegetation of the zone and the vegetation spreads following the direction of the shores near the sea and the lake It is growing taller and denser until it reaches the adjacent streets Small places are to be found on the edges of the park Places where a series of large ceramic vases join with the existing vegetation, similar to the garden of a house " Miralles Tagliabue" photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga Landscape designer Technical engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT EDAW Europroject Consultores Asociados Diagonal Mar / HINES MVar By Car: Access routes to Diagonal Mar include Avenida Diagonal, Ronda Litoral and Rambla Prim and are within a twenty minute drive from the city centre By Public Transport: The Diagonal Mar Centre is connected by a network of ten bus and three underground lines linked to all points of the city Underground Stations: Maresme / Forum, Selva de Mar, Besós-Mar Buses Lines: Lines 7, 36, 41, 43, 141, N-6, N-8 8

Equipamientos Londres-Villarroel Calle Londres Barcelona This project is an intervention whose goal is to clear a saturated residential fabric The incorporation of a varied programme on this block, such as subsidised housing for young people, a primary school and sports fields, allows a reinterpretation of the typological possibilities of this block in the urban development by Cerdà with a direct relationship between inside and outside and a break in the buildings that does not impede the view of the original urban elements However, the façade of the buildings creates a proportion and space rhythm whose relationship with its actual surroundings is open to discussion Regarding the advantages that this type of programme contributes to the context, not only are the community facilities very much worth noting, but the revitalisation of the population of 19th century bourgeois urban developments with a type of user that is becoming scarcer and scarcer Project is not public! m² Coll-Leclerc Arquitectos City of Barcelona aplust photo: José Hevia The project is situated in the area of l'eixample in Barcelona 11

photo: Duccio Malagamba photo: Duccio Malagamba Diagonal 197 Avinguda Diagonal Barcelona Although this building has a non-continuous front façade on Avinguda Diagonal, at the back it aligns with the axis that is initiated by the nearby Torre Agbar The building has two distinct parts: ten lower floors, irregular and rhomboid-shaped, which are aligned to Avinguda Diagonal and become the basement of the building; and seven upper floors, trapezoidal-shaped, which break the alignment These floors retreat into the interior of the structure, creating a slimmer volume that crowns the building The amount is set on 5665 m2 above ground and 7300 below ground Unique in its composition, the earth-tone façade consists of front-hole, horizontal architraves, which are supported by vertical structures The panels are precast reinforced concrete with fiberglass and coloured mass of GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete) Project is not public! 15 photo: Ariel Ramírez photo: Ariel Ramírez ME Barcelona Hotel Carrer Pere IV Barcelona Initially known as Hotel Habitat Sky, the building was sold in 2008 to Melia Hotels Hence, its name was changed to Hotel ME Barcelona The hotel is thought of as a play of volumes A cubic building acts as a counterpoint behind the tower, which is a rectangular parallelepiped cut lengthwise in two, with one of them half-shifted skywards This rupture of the perfect geometric block creates a movement of form and volume that bestows an urban sense on the insertion of the tower in the horizontal city The shifted half-volume creates the building's reference signs: down, the cantilever at 25 metres height that acts as a gateway; up, the crest in the skyline The hotel's skin is made of micro-perforated aluminium behind a glass curtain wall, which gives the building the image of a bright metal needle m² Main designer, Associate architect Dominique Perrault AIA Salazar Navarro Corada Figueras Arquitectos Habitat Inmobiliaria Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 15
photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Association of Catalan s Plaza Nova Barcelona The project for the headquarters of the Collegi d'arquitectes de Catalunya (Catalan architects' professional body) was selected in the design competition held in 1958 The building stands in a unique setting in the historic heart of the city, opposite to one of the entries to the Roman city and only a few metres from the Cathedral The project uses a modern architectonic language facing the historic environment The building presents two clearly differentiated parts: a low trapezoidal base fitting to the plot form and respecting the street line, and an eight-storey tower set back from the Square and attached to the walls of the neighbouring buildings The base volume houses the public programme and the offices are placed into the tower The construction uses a metal frame and prefabricated panels The graffito in the upper part of the base was designed by Picasso In the basement a great architecture bookshop is located 1959 Artist Xavier Busquets Sindreu Pablo Picasso Collegi d'arquitectes de Catalunya Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín ciutada@coaccat Monday to Friday 08:00-21:00 In the basement the best architecture bookshop of Barca is housed: COOPERATIVA JORDI CAPELL Telephone see also Closest subway is Jaume I, building is located opposite of the cathedral 16
photo: Hisao Suzuki photo: Hisao Suzuki San Antoni-Joan Oliver Library Carrer del Comte Borrell Barcelona es The varied brief recovers the interior space of a block to make the urban setting more dynamic The library, used as a gateway, filters the light through the reading room boxes inserted between the two lateral units This way, sunlight is allowed to enter through the space running from the street into the garden The centre for the elderly configures the public space of the inner block with its frontal wall and its rear courtyard It becomes an element of social cohesion by encouraging interaction between the children playing in the courtyard and the elderly people who come and go The garden, with its trees and earthen paving, is presented as an extension of the library's reading rooms 2008 Structural engineer Technical engineer RCR Arquitectes Blazquez-Guanter Grau-Del Pozo Enginyers SC Proeixample Jose_Garcia photo: Eugeni Pons 17
photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Civic Center Sagrada Familia Carrer Provença Barcelona The project is sited at the Eixample district, which is characterised by the urban grid of Plan Cerdá and its uniformed square blocks This project means a redefinition of a complex already existing through the recycling of a unused building to convert it into a library The entrances to the buildings are rearranged by placing them in the corner, at the same time a new element, housing the fire escape, is set up into this place; these two operations emphasizes the importance of the chamfer in the Cerda's grid The library building is based on two ideas; first, allowing the light penetrates in the library by transforming the walls into glass, a light aluminium mesh provides sun protection; the second idea is the removal of the central bay of the former building, this idea generates a three floor high patio that allows the reading of the building as a unique space photo: José F García Martín m² Technical engineer Structural engineer Ruisánchez Arquitectes Joan González Gou Robert Brufau Proeixample Jose_Garcia 18
Media-TIC Carrer de Roc Boronat / Carrer de Sancho de Avila Barcelona The Media-TIC building is located in the 22@Barcelona district, at the intersection of Carrer de Roc Boronat and Carrer de Sancho de Ávila, near the Parc Barcelona Media The building is designed to be a communications hub and meeting point for businesses and institutions in the world of information and communication technologies (ICTs), as well as for the media and audio-visual sectors With this project, Barcelona is transforming an industrial district which was the city's main economic motor for over a hundred years In its place, it is creating a new model of intellectual space that will promote collaboration and synergies between the University, Technology and Business, with the aim of encouraging the development of an innovative culture and fresh talent photo: Iwan Baan m² Structural engineer Project manager Services engineer Technical engineer Cloud 9 BOMA SL CAST PGI Grup Tecnics G3 22@barcelona gonzalezdioslydia 19
photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona Plaça Vila de Madrid Plaça Vila de Madrid s/n Barcelona The design sets out to revitalize the square as an urban pedestrian space, celebrating its archaeological site The project proposed a central stretch of grass on the same level as CCanuda and the eastern side of the square The grassy surface slopes gently down to the level of the Roman necropolis Before the Palau Sabassona building, a strip of pavement with a portico provides a platform from which to view the tombs A walkway projects over the archaeological remains, joining up with the prolongation of CDuc de la Victòria, which connects with the Rambla via a shopping arcade This walkway houses a flexible system of retracting sliding doors, constructed to control access to the archaeological site The outer edge of the square is developed using the construction materials and street furniture habitually found in Barcelona's old town Grass, basaltic stone and Corten steel are introduced into the centre, however, the latter being used in walls to protect the existing trees photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona m², Landscape architect BCQ arquitectura BCQarquitecturaBarcelona Foment de Ciutat Vella, Barcelona City Council 20
