5 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Santa Catarina Market Avinguda de Francesc Cambó Barcelona Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina strikes a magical balance between local producers and consumers, contemporary architecture and tourism The redevelopment retains its original use as a retail food market A huge, undulating canopy covers an existing, former rundown neo-classical market in a large square within sight of the gothic cathedral The canopy consists of a mosaic of 325,000 vividly multicolored hexagonal Spanish tiles set in mortar, "whose various colors recall a sill life of produce" It is a view that will be particularly appreciated by the residents of the neighboring apartment blocks The roof is supported on three primary clear-span trusses that cut through, up and over the roof But, from below, it reads as an organic timber assembly At the opposite end from the retained arcade, an irregular latticework of timber slats brings to mind an Indonesian village hall - a typically offbeat Miralles invention and a reminder that he worked on this design before his death in m² Services engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT PGI Grup Foment de Ciutat Vella MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst Barcelona's daily food markets are all in covered halls and are open daily between 8am and 3pm and 5pm till 8pm, though times may change in summer and winter Metro : Jaume I (Line 4) 5

7 Biomedical Research Park Dr Aiguader 88 E Barcelona PRBB building has a total surface of more than m2 and is located at a 9000 m2 site at Barcelona's seafront by the beach, between Hospital del Mar (with a connection to it) and Arts hotel in the Olympic Village It is a 117x74 meters building of 9 floors above and 3 floors under ground with an elliptical shape and a high level of functional poly-valence The building project has been carried out by a team of two prestigious architects: Manel Brullet and Albert de Pineda, to create a building that adopts the specific objectives of PRBB Facade covered in red cedar controlling the incidence of light and sun, as well as lightening the structure Project is not public! m² Main designer, Manel Brullet Alberto de Pineda Ayuntamiento de Barcelona & Universidad Pompeu Fabra MVar Metro Station: Ciutadella Vila Olimpica or just walk the Passeig Maritim and you will find it 7

8 Social Housing at Sant Agustí Vell Serra Xic Barcelona This is a model insertion of homes in a historical district and contributes residential density to its surroundings Historical districts possess a large amount of services and infrastructures in a very small amount of space These services and infrastructures must be taken advantage of, and because of that the restoration of historic districts and the arrival of younger generations is beneficial However, some highly dense areas require a spatial cleaning up of their fabric, physically and programmatically, with the addition of quality public spaces and collective facilities nearby Project is not public! m² Josep Llinás Carmona aplust photo: Julio Cunill 8

9 Equipamientos Londres-Villarroel Calle Londres Barcelona This project is an intervention whose goal is to clear a saturated residential fabric The incorporation of a varied programme on this block, such as subsidised housing for young people, a primary school and sports fields, allows a reinterpretation of the typological possibilities of this block in the urban development by Cerdà with a direct relationship between inside and outside and a break in the buildings that does not impede the view of the original urban elements However, the façade of the buildings creates a proportion and space rhythm whose relationship with its actual surroundings is open to discussion Regarding the advantages that this type of programme contributes to the context, not only are the community facilities very much worth noting, but the revitalisation of the population of 19th century bourgeois urban developments with a type of user that is becoming scarcer and scarcer Project is not public! m² Coll-Leclerc Arquitectos City of Barcelona aplust photo: José Hevia The project is situated in the area of l'eixample in Barcelona 9

12 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Forum Building Avinguda Diagonal Barcelona The Forum Building is a triangular measuring 180 meters on each side and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formed by the surrounding streets It is considered by some to be an icon of the "New Barcelona " However, local opinion on its aesthetic and functional merits is deeply divided It was the symbol of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and the serious flaws that arose during its construction were widely covered in both the Spanish national and foreign press It has lain empty since the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacity to hold 3,200 people The seating is below the Forum Plaza level The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructure measuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on 17 pillars From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditorium are suspended The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m Herzog and De Meuron Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 Naomi photo: Francisco Nogueira Metro: L4 - Stop "Maresme/Fórum" Bus: Lines NitBus: N6 Tramway: Line 1, Stop Trambesós: Fórum 12

20 Palau de la Musica Extension Calle Palau de la Música Barcelona The Palau de la Música Catalana, originally built in 1908 by the architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, as a headquarters for the Orfeó Català and funded by popular donations, constitutes a symbolic and sentimental heritage of an entire city that identifies with its history It is one of the most representative buildings of Catalan Modernist style The façade of Domènech i Montaner s Modernista concert hall, with its bare brick, busts and mosaic friezes representing Catalan musical traditions and composers, is impressive enough, but it is surpassed by the building s staggering interior The old Palau has been bursting under the pressure of the musical activity going on inside it, and an extension, restoration, remodelling and renovation project by Oscar Tusquets and Carles Díaz in 1989 is being followed by further alterations by the same architect In 1997, the Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Hospital de Sant Pau photo: Hans Brinker Project is not public! 1989 Main designer, Oscar Tusquets Blanca Lluís Domènech i Montaner Palau de la Música Catalana MatthijsvanderSluis The Palau de la Música Catalana organises daily guided tours of the Modernist Concert hall and, when available, Lluís Millet Hall and the Chamber Music Hall Tours can not be reserved, and tickets can be purchased as of one week before the day of the tour Advanced ticket purchase is recommended Ticket office opens at 9:30 Buses: Lines 17, 19, 40 and 45 Metro: Lines I and IV Urquinaona station 20

21 Subcentral Eléctrica Carrer de Tánger Barcelona In the newly built office area of in Barcelona, this was one of the first buildings to be completed This newly developed neighborhood is situated between the Torre Agbar by Jean Nouvel and the Forum area where the exposition building by Herzog and De Meuron is located The facade is made out of ochre-died concrete, covered with steel cables, on which plants grow in a pre-designed pattern Project is not public! m² Victor Rahola Aguadé MatthijsvanderSluis 21

22 photo: Davide Pellegrini photo: Davide Pellegrini Ciutat de la Justicia Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes Barcelona On a border site between Barcelona and l'hospitalet, this new sqm City of Justice has been completed in 2008 Bringing together legal departments that were previously located in 17 buildings that were scattered across the two cities, this precinct comprises eight new buildings that are formally and compositionally unified in an apparently haphazard arrangement In form and disposition, the City of Justice breaks down the huge programme of accommodation into four judicial buildings, clustered around a linked concourse with four independent buildings set on the periphery The central cluster of buildings contains courtrooms at the ground level, and uses the concourse as a filter to gather people at the beginning and end of their judicial visit The remaining four buildings provide accommodation for judicial support services, such as forensic sciences, and include two commercial buildings with retail at grade photo: Davide Pellegrini Project is not public! m² Associate architect David Chipperfield s b720 arquitectos DavidePellegrini 22

24 photo: Pedro Pegenaute photo: Eugeni Pons Court of Sant Boi Carles Martí-Vila Barcelona The building is centred around three vertical bars separated by three courtyards on a plinth Large skylights illuminate the ground-floor entrance hall This hall acts as a focus point for all public areas and their vertical nuclei The hearing rooms and the upper bars, one per room, of the judicial offices are situated on the plinth Four areas in each corner allow access and communication for the public, judges, court workers etc The civil registry office opens out onto the rear street, emphasising the important role it plays in the façade as a whole and the surrounding public area The concrete sheets are placed at different distances and inclinations, giving a certain dynamic feel (a court should appear agile and alive) to the building, while at the same time orienting and framing the visual impact As a result, the image of the façades gradually changes depending on where you look at the building from photo: Pedro Pegenaute m² GISA Departament de Justicia Generalitat de Catalunya BAASarquitectura 24

25 photo: Lutz Hirschmann photo: chaland Umbracle Passeig de Picasso Barcelona The Umbracle (shade house) was part of the buildings designed for the Universal Exhibition and was build in 1883, being used through the exhibition as a pavilion After the event the building recovered its original function, and it is one of the few structures that still prevail from the original exhibition Many other buildings from important architects of the time disappeared after the exhibition was closed This shade house is formed of bare brick façades and wooden louvres to sift the light through the inside The structure in the interior is sustained by slender iron columns, leaving a closed space that produces a suitable thermal and humidity conditions for the implantations of vegetal species from tropical origins photo: Marta Muñoz 1888 Josep Fontsere Naomi 25

26 photo: Rafael Vargas photo: Rafael Vargas Mestre Nicolau 19 Carrer del Mestre Nicolau Barcelona The complete refurbishment of this office building with serious structural problems allowed its transformation into a corporate building It took into account the need to achieve a high level of flexibility and required services, as well as designing a new façade that identifies it as a modern corporate building, using colour as a differentiating tool On the façade, transparent, coloured glass slats form a plane in front of the enclosure The set changes gradually in colour and density Horizontally, the gradation of colour varies from yellow to orange tones, borrowing awnings on the balconies that surround it Vertically, the density of the slats is determined by the solar radiation and the size of the street that makes protection on the higher levels more necessary The forging of the ground floor was rebuilt to the street level elevation, while the forging of the basement was raised to obtain an underdevelopment of the parking ramp Project is not public! m² b720 arquitectos Layetana Inmuebles b720_arquitectos photo: Rafael Vargas 26
