3 Equipamientos Londres-Villarroel Calle Londres Barcelona This project is an intervention whose goal is to clear a saturated residential fabric The incorporation of a varied programme on this block, such as subsidised housing for young people, a primary school and sports fields, allows a reinterpretation of the typological possibilities of this block in the urban development by Cerdà with a direct relationship between inside and outside and a break in the buildings that does not impede the view of the original urban elements However, the façade of the buildings creates a proportion and space rhythm whose relationship with its actual surroundings is open to discussion Regarding the advantages that this type of programme contributes to the context, not only are the community facilities very much worth noting, but the revitalisation of the population of 19th century bourgeois urban developments with a type of user that is becoming scarcer and scarcer Project is not public! m² Coll-Leclerc Arquitectos City of Barcelona aplust photo: José Hevia The project is situated in the area of l'eixample in Barcelona 3

4 photo: Davide Pellegrini photo: Davide Pellegrini Ciutat de la Justicia Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes Barcelona On a border site between Barcelona and l'hospitalet, this new sqm City of Justice has been completed in 2008 Bringing together legal departments that were previously located in 17 buildings that were scattered across the two cities, this precinct comprises eight new buildings that are formally and compositionally unified in an apparently haphazard arrangement In form and disposition, the City of Justice breaks down the huge programme of accommodation into four judicial buildings, clustered around a linked concourse with four independent buildings set on the periphery The central cluster of buildings contains courtrooms at the ground level, and uses the concourse as a filter to gather people at the beginning and end of their judicial visit The remaining four buildings provide accommodation for judicial support services, such as forensic sciences, and include two commercial buildings with retail at grade photo: Davide Pellegrini Project is not public! m² Associate architect David Chipperfield s b720 arquitectos DavidePellegrini 4

6 photo: Ariel Ramírez photo: Ariel Ramírez ME Barcelona Hotel Carrer Pere IV Barcelona Initially known as Hotel Habitat Sky, the building was sold in 2008 to Melia Hotels Hence, its name was changed to Hotel ME Barcelona The hotel is thought of as a play of volumes A cubic building acts as a counterpoint behind the tower, which is a rectangular parallelepiped cut lengthwise in two, with one of them half-shifted skywards This rupture of the perfect geometric block creates a movement of form and volume that bestows an urban sense on the insertion of the tower in the horizontal city The shifted half-volume creates the building's reference signs: down, the cantilever at 25 metres height that acts as a gateway; up, the crest in the skyline The hotel's skin is made of micro-perforated aluminium behind a glass curtain wall, which gives the building the image of a bright metal needle m² Main designer, Associate architect Dominique Perrault AIA Salazar Navarro Corada Figueras Arquitectos Habitat Inmobiliaria Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 6

10 photo: Beth Gali Arquitectes photo: Beth Gali Arquitectes Social Housing in Sants Calle Badalona Barcelona The program of this social housing project as well as its specific emplacement at the junction of the old neighborhood of Hostafrancs and Barcelona Sants railway station are determinant for the project's development Due to its location, the building acts as a facade (front) towards a big open space (the bus terminal adjacent to the station), as an important corner and as a border between the old neighborhood and the station From an urban point of view, the duality of scales was taken into consideration It is shown in the building through the volumetric arrangement of the projecting balconies and the domestic scale of the openings A void at the second floor level emphasizes the corner This "emptiness" could be seen as the extension of the ground floor with restaurants and shops The treatment of the facade, the windows and the openings, reaffirm the concept of the duality of scales: an abstract vision from the distance and a concrete and domestic vision from near photo: Beth Gali Arquitectes Project is not public! m² BETH GALI arquitectes BIMSA-SOGEUR BethGaliBBGGarchitectes 10

14 photo: Adrià Goula photo: Adrià Goula Historical Station of Tibidabo Funicular Avinguda del Tibidabo Barcelona The lower station of the Tibidabo's funicular was created as the starting point to come up the Tibidabo's mountain With the birth of the Amusement Park this station simultaneously became the parks' new entrance, maintaining the quality of train station The will of being the new entrance to the Park makes us to present an hazardous but very clear proposal, which is, to be the entrance hall to the magic and the illusion waiting on the top of the mountain The architects tried to understand the place, a surprising place; a house for a train that at the same time is a house without rooms or closed spaces, only a single space as entrance giving the welcome to the Amusement Park This double reality is really amazing: on one hand, the space is perceived to protect the train, but on the other hand the common domestic architecture for a train station is also understood photo: Adrià Goula m² MiAS Arquitectes miasarquitectes 14

17 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín BASF Building Rehabilitation Passeig Gracia Barcelona The project faces the rehabilitation and change of use of a building which sites on a chamfer of the Paseo de Gracia, the most emblematic via of Barcelona The former offices of BASF on Barcelona are transformed into a residential building with commercial space on the ground floor The most meaningful point of the project is the total substitution of the façade Ferrater designs a new plane façade that delete the former cantilevers The façade is thought as a several layers filter, 50% transparent-50% opaque, composed by fix panels of translucent marble, sliding panels of wooden slats and glazed bays The composition of the façade alternates the position of the different kinds of panels reaching a great formal dynamism, at the same time the different possibilities of the sliding panels allow optimal conditions of natural light into the dwellings photo: José F García Martín Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Carlos Ferrater S4 Arquitectes Renta Corporación Jose_Garcia 17

19 photo: Duccio Malagamba photo: Duccio Malagamba Diagonal 197 Avinguda Diagonal Barcelona Although this building has a non-continuous front façade on Avinguda Diagonal, at the back it aligns with the axis that is initiated by the nearby Torre Agbar The building has two distinct parts: ten lower floors, irregular and rhomboid-shaped, which are aligned to Avinguda Diagonal and become the basement of the building; and seven upper floors, trapezoidal-shaped, which break the alignment These floors retreat into the interior of the structure, creating a slimmer volume that crowns the building The amount is set on 5665 m2 above ground and 7300 below ground Unique in its composition, the earth-tone façade consists of front-hole, horizontal architraves, which are supported by vertical structures The panels are precast reinforced concrete with fiberglass and coloured mass of GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete) Project is not public! 22 Social Housing at Sant Agustí Vell Serra Xic Barcelona This is a model insertion of homes in a historical district and contributes residential density to its surroundings Historical districts possess a large amount of services and infrastructures in a very small amount of space These services and infrastructures must be taken advantage of, and because of that the restoration of historic districts and the arrival of younger generations is beneficial However, some highly dense areas require a spatial cleaning up of their fabric, physically and programmatically, with the addition of quality public spaces and collective facilities nearby Project is not public! m² Josep Llinás Carmona aplust photo: Julio Cunill 22

23 photo: liliana sousa Collserola Tower Carretera de Vallvidrera Barcelona The telecommunications tower was built in the Tibidabo Hill, on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Barcelona, 1992 With its 288 meters high, is the tallest building in the city Is the hub of telecommunications in Catalonia, broadcasting 100% of the Television and 95% of radio we hear in Barcelona and its metropolitan area The tower itself consists of three parts: a concrete shaft of only 45 m diameter for a total of 205m height, a tubular steel mast of 38m and culminating the total, a stretch of lattice of 45m The bold structural design has required a very unique construction process, based on the construction of different ceilings on the ground, which had to be hauled by the central axis of concrete, previously built up its site to more than 70 meters above soil The 13th floor is open to the public allowing a panoramic perspective of the city If weather conditions are good your eyes can reach the Pyrenees m² Foster & Partners Torre de Collserola SA li photo: liliana sousa The timetable changes between the different months of the year For more information check the website The best way is to go with the Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), getting off at one of the following stations: Peu del Funicular, Baixador de Vallvidrera or Les Planes 23

24 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Can Jaumandreu Carrer Peru Barcelona This block is in the Poble Nou district, a former industrial area of Barcelona Poble Nou remained the urban geometry designed by Cerdà, but the blocks were occupied according to the industrial needs At the start of the project, a building of brickwork (already adapted for school uses) and a very well-built imposing chimney, also in brick, kept in this block The architect thought that these two buildings had the capacity to define the volume and the shape of the new constructions The project creates two new buildings aligned to the plot's borders, which rebuilt the unity of the block and leave a courtyard around the chimney The new buildings use the same construction order as the existing ones, face brick, sloping roofs, regular structure, bays repeated and patterned by the structure, but at the same time, the construction is lightened with aluminium or sun protections mobiles photo: José F García Martín Project is not public! 2006 Technical engineer Structural engineer Associate architect Josep Llinás Carmona grupo JG Jordi Bernuz Roger Subira Barcelona Activa Jose_Garcia 24
