photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Santa Catarina Market Avinguda de Francesc Cambó Barcelona Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina strikes a magical balance between local producers and consumers, contemporary architecture and tourism The redevelopment retains its original use as a retail food market A huge, undulating canopy covers an existing, former rundown neo-classical market in a large square within sight of the gothic cathedral The canopy consists of a mosaic of 325,000 vividly multicolored hexagonal Spanish tiles set in mortar, "whose various colors recall a sill life of produce" It is a view that will be particularly appreciated by the residents of the neighboring apartment blocks The roof is supported on three primary clear-span trusses that cut through, up and over the roof But, from below, it reads as an organic timber assembly At the opposite end from the retained arcade, an irregular latticework of timber slats brings to mind an Indonesian village hall - a typically offbeat Miralles invention and a reminder that he worked on this design before his death in m² Services engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT PGI Grup Foment de Ciutat Vella MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst Barcelona's daily food markets are all in covered halls and are open daily between 8am and 3pm and 5pm till 8pm, though times may change in summer and winter Metro : Jaume I (Line 4) 10

photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Wojtek Gurak Esplanade and Photovoltaic power plant Avinguda del Camp de la Bota Barcelona One of the intentions of the Forum 2004 in Barcelona was to take advantage of the area s existing infrastructure So they integrated the existing Besòs sewage treatment plant (total urban renovation area 100 hectares) and covered parts of it with photovoltaics On the plaza, the Esplanade, is a sailing school, also covered with panels The Pergola stands a bit further out towards the sea, on the entrance to the new Port Forum A sculptural concrete structure with a simple plane offers a nice place of shade on its otherwise large, empty and mostly hot area Expected performance ratio of Pergola system: 1250 kwh/kwp (annual yield app 554 MWh/year) The city has 55 projects to establish a more sustainable city model, whilst reducing environmental impact through energy savings, an increase in the use of renewable energies and energy efficiency In order to maximize solar exposure throughout the year, the panel faces south and is tilted at a 35 angle Excellent sea views m² Martínez Lapeña - Torres Arquitectos INABENSA Phönix SonnenStrom Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 Services engineer Project manager photo: Wojtek Gurak 24/7 MI_MOA If you walk or cycle along the sea from the Port Olímpic for about 3 km, you ll get to this area (also accessible by tram from the city) Well worth a visit 11

photo: Merijn Neeleman photo: Dirk Verwoerd Fish Carrer de Ramon Trias Fargas Barcelona One of the first public projects of Gehry is the Barcelona Fish a huge fish sculpture placed on Barcelona s waterfront for the 1992 Olympics The monumental fish sculpture functions as a landmark in the Olympic Village, anchoring a retail complex designed by Gehry Partners within a larger hotel development by Skidmore, Owing & Merill This fish sculpture was also a landmark in the history of Frank O Gehry & Associates, inaugurating the firm's use of computer-aided design and manufacturing The project's financial and scheduling constraints prompted James M Glymph, a partner in the firm, to search for a computer program that would facilitate the design and construction process, leading to the adoption of CATIA (computer aided three-dimensional interactive application) The sculpture was modeled entirely in 3D and delivered directly to the fabricators as a 3D model The fish is a frequently recurring motif in Gehry's work, serving as inspiration and mascot photo: Wojtek Gurak 1992 Gehry Partners City of Barcelona / 1992 Olympics MI_MOA The fish is viewed from the public street, so its open 24/7 Metro: Barceloneta, Ciutadella/Villa Olimpica 12

photo: Diego Barazza photo: Enric Duch Hospital Militar Police Station Avenida Hospital Militar Barcelona This police station, part of a spatial masterplan for the entire Hospital Militar area, is the most striking of the three already realized buildings The top section on the street side projects five metres beyond the lower part, by means of a steel structure The resulting portico ushers the visitor inside At the rear, a set-back equal to the projection at the front provides a counter movement to the green embankment Emblazoned in man-sized letters on the recessed, ground-floor street façade is the word MOSSOS (The regional police force) It was done using the same pixel technique that Salvador Dalí employed in 'Lincoln in Dalívision' Inside, the building concentrates on its function as a work environment: open and light, clearly organized and indifferent to the question of whether it conforms to a particular image This is most apparent in the cells which are painted pink and have no sharp angles 2006 Mestura arquitectes Departement d'interior / Generalitat de Catalunya photo: Enric Duch Sander_Laudy 13

photo: Adrià Goula photo: Adrià Goula Can Ricart Sport Complex Carrer de Sant Oleguer Barcelona The building completes the urban block bounded by two different public open spaces urally the project strategy starts from the existing conditions that made it especially complex ie the integration of two buildings with strong identities, the sports pavilion (from the nineties) and the industrial building of the 19th century The main effort of the architects was to arrive at a compact and coherent functional whole that volumetrically maintains the reading of the three bodies that form it: the two existing buildings and the new construction that contains the swimming pool, all formally autonomous The new building is materially and formally austere The façade is made from exposed in-situ concrete, giving a texture that is a homage to the start of the textile industry in Catalonia in this area of the city The texture has come from a specially combined formwork of timber planks of different characteristics photo: Adrià Goula m² vora arquitectura Foment de Ciutat Vella thomas metro: L2-L3 Paral lel, L3 Liceu bus: 20, 24, 36, 57, 64, 91, 120,

photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga Diagonal Mar Park Av Diagonal y Cinturón Ronda Litoral Barcelona It's design favours an interaction with the city It is organised by following a series of paths, which similar to the branches of a tree, spread out in all directions A type of Rambla, a main thoroughfare, connects La Diagonal directly to the nearby beach crossing the Litoral ring by means of a pedestrian bridge and it transforms itself into a series of recreational tracks: to stroll, for skating, cycling, walking etc A large area of water in which there are various fountains, the flow of water and the vegetation on its edges oxygenates the water The presence of the water characterises the vegetation of the zone and the vegetation spreads following the direction of the shores near the sea and the lake It is growing taller and denser until it reaches the adjacent streets Small places are to be found on the edges of the park Places where a series of large ceramic vases join with the existing vegetation, similar to the garden of a house " Miralles Tagliabue" photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga Landscape designer Technical engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT EDAW Europroject Consultores Asociados Diagonal Mar / HINES MVar By Car: Access routes to Diagonal Mar include Avenida Diagonal, Ronda Litoral and Rambla Prim and are within a twenty minute drive from the city centre By Public Transport: The Diagonal Mar Centre is connected by a network of ten bus and three underground lines linked to all points of the city Underground Stations: Maresme / Forum, Selva de Mar, Besós-Mar Buses Lines: Lines 7, 36, 41, 43, 141, N-6, N

photo: Hans Brinker Botanical Garden Carrer del Doctor Font i Quer Barcelona Barcelona s Botanical Garden was designed by a team: architects Carlos Ferrater and Josep Lluís Canosa; landscape architect Bet Figueras; horticulturalist Artur Bossy and biologist Joan Pedrola First was considered how the vegetation was structured It was important to plan the layout according to geographic criteria, grouping the plants in the world s 5 Mediterranean regions And within these regional groupings, the plants should be combined according to ecological affinity, thus recreating landscapes as found in nature Secondly the mountain itself provides the topographic conditions for establishing the different plant areas This entailed designing the network of paths around the natural relief and avoiding large earth moving operations The result was a triangular-shaped network adapted to the available space and the mountain slopes This mesh of paths marked out the 71 spaces containing the principal plant communities found in Mediterranean climate regions all over the world photo: Hans Brinker Main designer, Landscape architect Landscape designer Landscape designer Carlos Ferrater Bet Figueras Josep Lluís Canosa Artur Bossy Joan Pedrola Monfort City of Barcelona hansbrinker November, December and January: from Monday to Sunday, from 10 am to 5 pm February, March and October: from Monday to Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm April, May and September: from Monday to Sunday, from 10 am to 7 pm June, July and August: from Monday to Sunday, from 10 am to 8 pm closed January 1 and December 25 admission is free on the last Sunday of the month Metro Espanya (L1 and L3) and bus Parc de Montjuïc Buses: Parc de Montjuïc or 50 and 55 Free tours at weekends (except August), visits by arrangement, audioguide, OCCM scientific media library, disabled access, public parking area, loan and hire of facilities call

Equipamientos Londres-Villarroel Calle Londres Barcelona This project is an intervention whose goal is to clear a saturated residential fabric The incorporation of a varied programme on this block, such as subsidised housing for young people, a primary school and sports fields, allows a reinterpretation of the typological possibilities of this block in the urban development by Cerdà with a direct relationship between inside and outside and a break in the buildings that does not impede the view of the original urban elements However, the façade of the buildings creates a proportion and space rhythm whose relationship with its actual surroundings is open to discussion Regarding the advantages that this type of programme contributes to the context, not only are the community facilities very much worth noting, but the revitalisation of the population of 19th century bourgeois urban developments with a type of user that is becoming scarcer and scarcer Project is not public! m² Coll-Leclerc Arquitectos City of Barcelona aplust photo: José Hevia The project is situated in the area of l'eixample in Barcelona 25

photo: João Sousa photo: João Sousa Illa de la Llum Passeig de Garcia Fària Barcelona This project forms part of one of the most important recent urban planning operations in Barcelona, the extension of the Diagonal all the way to the sea This brought about a considerable improvement to the quality of life in an until then marginal neighbourhood and the recovery of a declining industrial area As compensation, the vertiginous rise in the price of land has turned these promotions into exclusive areas, available to very few buyers and with a dubious wish of integration in the social and urban fabric The merit of the project is, above all, its capacity to hold a respectable number of high rise housing units and ability to maintain its dynamics This not only happens because of its strategically placed voids but also because of its exterior closure which dominates the façade and creates constant variation Project is not public! m² Lluis Collet & Ignacio Aparicio Espais & Landscape Diagonal Mar aplust photo: Lluis Casals Underground stops: Maresme / Forum, Selva de Mar, Besós-Mar Bus stops: Lines 7, 36, 41, 43, 141, N

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Municipal Sailing School Moll del Gregal Port Olímpic Barcelona This project was part of a larger masterplan for the Olympic Port of Barcelona, and urban plan which balances between the needs for a leisure port and a centre of new urban activities, forming a new 'wet' square for the city The sailing school's main premises are situated beneath the raised north-east promenade The school's boathouse, sited in the building, acts as the termination of the raised north-east promenade and the linchpin of the connection with the linear system of breakwaters The building is composed of two volumes with brilliant white façades, crowned with a total of 24 pyramids which resolve the problems of permanent lighting, ventilation and protection from the water The group of pyramids articulates a relatively private square intended for warm-up exercises prior to sailing, with direct access to the sea by means of a slipway, which makes unnecessary to leave through the harbour mouth 1991 Main designer, MBM arquitectes Albert Puigdomènech Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst Tel , cmv@fcvcat From Monday to Friday: 10:00 h 19:00 h Metro: L4, Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica or Bogatell Bus: 6, 36, 41, 92 and 141 Tram (T4), Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica 29

photo: Pedro Pegenaute photo: Eugeni Pons Court of Sant Boi Carles Martí-Vila Barcelona The building is centred around three vertical bars separated by three courtyards on a plinth Large skylights illuminate the ground-floor entrance hall This hall acts as a focus point for all public areas and their vertical nuclei The hearing rooms and the upper bars, one per room, of the judicial offices are situated on the plinth Four areas in each corner allow access and communication for the public, judges, court workers etc The civil registry office opens out onto the rear street, emphasising the important role it plays in the façade as a whole and the surrounding public area The concrete sheets are placed at different distances and inclinations, giving a certain dynamic feel (a court should appear agile and alive) to the building, while at the same time orienting and framing the visual impact As a result, the image of the façades gradually changes depending on where you look at the building from photo: Pedro Pegenaute m² GISA Departament de Justicia Generalitat de Catalunya BAASarquitectura 33

photo: Rafael Vargas photo: Rafael Vargas Mestre Nicolau 19 Carrer del Mestre Nicolau Barcelona The complete refurbishment of this office building with serious structural problems allowed its transformation into a corporate building It took into account the need to achieve a high level of flexibility and required services, as well as designing a new façade that identifies it as a modern corporate building, using colour as a differentiating tool On the façade, transparent, coloured glass slats form a plane in front of the enclosure The set changes gradually in colour and density Horizontally, the gradation of colour varies from yellow to orange tones, borrowing awnings on the balconies that surround it Vertically, the density of the slats is determined by the solar radiation and the size of the street that makes protection on the higher levels more necessary The forging of the ground floor was rebuilt to the street level elevation, while the forging of the basement was raised to obtain an underdevelopment of the parking ramp Project is not public! m² b720 arquitectos Layetana Inmuebles b720_arquitectos photo: Rafael Vargas 34

photo: Duccio Malagamba photo: Duccio Malagamba Diagonal 197 Avinguda Diagonal Barcelona Although this building has a non-continuous front façade on Avinguda Diagonal, at the back it aligns with the axis that is initiated by the nearby Torre Agbar The building has two distinct parts: ten lower floors, irregular and rhomboid-shaped, which are aligned to Avinguda Diagonal and become the basement of the building; and seven upper floors, trapezoidal-shaped, which break the alignment These floors retreat into the interior of the structure, creating a slimmer volume that crowns the building The amount is set on 5665 m2 above ground and 7300 below ground Unique in its composition, the earth-tone façade consists of front-hole, horizontal architraves, which are supported by vertical structures The panels are precast reinforced concrete with fiberglass and coloured mass of GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete) Project is not public! 36 photo: Jordi Farrando photo: Jordi Farrando Príncep de Girona Gardens Carrer de Lepant Barcelona photo: Jordi Farrando Cerdà's design for the Eixample included a series of green areas as facilities for the area However, the new city gradually became more and more built up Nowadays, no parks can be created in this area without first demolishing large buildings on sites which are turned to other uses and transformed into public spaces This is the case of the Jardins del Príncep de Girona, on the site of a former military barracks With a surface area of just over two hectares, the project for the new gardens was based around the tree-lined space that was the central courtyard of the barracks The original square court has been enlarged appreciably, maintaining the existing plane of trees and creating a large central esplanade for all kinds of future activities The esplanade contains a 1900 m2 stretch of water which, with its changing interplay of light and reflections, becomes the focus of attention for both the gardens and the neighbourhood m² Building costs consultant Jordi Farrando Elpidi Pedreny Barcelona Town Hall farrando 36

photo: Pedro Penguante Banco Sabadell Atlantico Entrance and Awning Pl Sant Roc Barcelona This project consists of a minor intervention in the entrance to an existing bank building The architects have highlighted the intervention at three different levels Firstly, the flooring is a white sheet that touches the ground at either extreme (as a ramp or as a stairway) and floats over it at the centre Secondly, the awning is effectively a large trough that collects rainwater and channels it down to the ground at either end Lastly, the finishes of the doorway (a series of mirrors, doormats and glazed surfaces) seek to break down the image of passage into independent photographic stills, highlighting the singularity of the movement: an interchange between exterior and interior photo: Beat Marugg Public access unknown! 38 photo: Ariel Ramírez photo: Ariel Ramírez ME Barcelona Hotel Carrer Pere IV Barcelona Initially known as Hotel Habitat Sky, the building was sold in 2008 to Melia Hotels Hence, its name was changed to Hotel ME Barcelona The hotel is thought of as a play of volumes A cubic building acts as a counterpoint behind the tower, which is a rectangular parallelepiped cut lengthwise in two, with one of them half-shifted skywards This rupture of the perfect geometric block creates a movement of form and volume that bestows an urban sense on the insertion of the tower in the horizontal city The shifted half-volume creates the building's reference signs: down, the cantilever at 25 metres height that acts as a gateway; up, the crest in the skyline The hotel's skin is made of micro-perforated aluminium behind a glass curtain wall, which gives the building the image of a bright metal needle m² Main designer, Associate architect Dominique Perrault AIA Salazar Navarro Corada Figueras Arquitectos Habitat Inmobiliaria Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 38

photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Casa de la Marina Passeig de Joan de Borbó Barcelona This building was the first urban apartment block carried out from start to finish by Coderch and Valls The urban context of the building in the 1950s was not valuable property, namely Barceloneta's narrow streets and Barcelona's industrial port For this reason, Coderch and Valls designed an introverted housing block where the exterior views are always conditioned by fixed venetian-type blinds The construction has affinities with the Italian avant-garde of the time, especially with Ignazio Gardella's work The building has a classic composition in three blocks: a two-storey zocalo for commercial use, combining large glazed areas and small-scale masonry; a six-storey body of apartments, composed by vertical strips of glazed ceramic tiles and the aforementioned white venetian blinds, and the coronation with a big eave of wooden boards Project is not public! m² Main designer, Josep Antoni Coderch Manel Valls Vergés Instituto Social de la Marina Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 39
