4 photo: L Guzzetta Maxwell House Edgeware rd 822 Los Angeles California The Maxwell house was built in 1941 for musicians Charles and Sybil Maxwell by one of Modernism's most important architects: The house is considered the first example of Neutra's work with pitched roofs and redwood siding The house, originally located in Brentwood District of Los Angeles was moved to a lot in Angelino Heights In order to be relocated, the building had to be cut in three parts Temporary shear walls were built to grant structural stability during transportation The relocation, executed in two different dates (one piece moved first, followed by the two remaining ones), was documented on video by professional video makers hired from the owner The event was extensively covered by the press photo: Brian Thomas Jones Project is not public! 1941 Donatella 4

5 photo: Raúl González photo: Raúl González Neutra VDL Studio and Residences Silver Lake Blvd 2300 Los Angeles California CA This is the historic, multi-family, live-work space of the architect It's official name is "The Richard and Dion Neutra VDL Studio and Residences" The letters "VDL" refer to the industrialist CH van der Leeuw who lent Neutra the money in 1932 to build the first stage It was built in three stages: in 1932, in 1940 and, with Neutra's architect son Dion, in 1966 This structure was the place where hi-tech, indoor-outdoor California Modern architecture began In 1990 it was bequeathed to the California State Polytechnic University Pomona College of Environmental Design photo: Raúl González Project is public! 6 photo: Ken McCown M H de Young Museum Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive 50 San Francisco California The M H de Young Museum sites atop the site of the old museum which was severely damaged in San Francisco earthquake of 1989 The building depicts this fracture not only in it's form, but also in the structure of the building itself, which can move almost a meter during an earthquake The copper skin, which covers the building entirely, is covered in dimples and perforations which change in colour throughout the day depending on the quality of sunlight Project is public! 7 Schindler House North Kings Road 835 West Hollywood California The Schindler House is considered by many to be the first Modernist house ever built The one-storey dwelling has tilt-up concrete walls, a flat roof and opens to the garden through sliding panels Since the Californian climate is so mild, the bedrooms are actually open air lofts that sit atop the building When occasional rain appeared, canvas could be rolled down over the openings The house served as Schindler's home and studio, and for a while also housed his friend and rival, The MAK Center for Art and ure currently occupies the house, where they regularly put on events Project is public!
